Mad-Dog has its roots in a television sitcom called Bob, starring Bob Newhart as Bob McKay.

In the tv series, McKay's golden age hero, Mad-Dog, undergoes a "90s re-imagining" much to his chagrin. The show, which I had never heard of previously, actually featured some guest appearances by Jack Kirby, Sergio Aragones, Jim Lee and other comic creators!
This comic was published as a flip-book. One side contained golden age Mad-Dog comics by Ty Templeton and the other side featured the 90s vigilante version written by Evan Dorkin with art by Gordon Purcell.
Dorkin's version certainly achieves the feeling of just another lame 90s vigilante comic but, Templeton's homage to golden age heroes is quite a treat. There's even a Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy homage in the book! Pick 'em up and check out Ty's side!
