Gamespot Game Of The Year 2007: Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)

There you go, overall the list was pretty good, I disagree with the best RPG and GOTY quite abit but besides that most of that stuff is pretty reasonable for me.

Trust me when I say this. There ain't nothing wrong with citing Super Mario Galaxy as "Game of the Year." Gamespot (I know, I know) ain't the only one.

I never said it was a bad game, but I can think of at least two games this year I'd put above it for the award. With that being said, I don't think there is anything 'wrong' with it getting the award, though just it wouldn't be my top pick.

Just the way you phrased your post at the end made me think you thought someone calling Galaxy the "Game of the year" was wrong. I'm sorry if my understanding was mistaken.

I personally would rate Galaxy as GOTY but that's just me (and a lot of other people would agree with me). But there were so many good games in 2007 that these kinds of lists are bound to cause discussions. I do enjoy that.

did you see the "dubious" honors?

did you see the "dubious" honors?

Yeah, but most of them weren't really best of, I didn't really bother with them

Pretty good list, although Rock Band hasn't come out here (Australia) yet so I can't really comment on that one.

I would've thought Call of Duty 4 would've gotten some sort of award though, that game is tops.

Good list, although I've never played Super Mario Galaxy

Yeah, it was a nice one.
Super Mario Galaxy was great fun, still not sure if i liked it as much as Bioshock though.

Just one thing i noticed.
In the dubious awards bit, they had worst trend, and one of the options was
"God of War-style button-mashing"minigames.
And i've been reading in game magazines, since god of war came out, what a wonderful thing those are, but i've hated them since God of War.
How someone decided replacing boss fights with some sort of Dragon's Lair with que cards minigame is what i wanted of the next generation of consoles, i will never know.

I fully agree. It doesn't even have to be that button-mashing style minigame, just the idea that you have been playing a type of game for hours and then for the (final) boss you have to switch over to a completely different type of game annoys me. Iin an ideal game in a bossfight you would apply the skills and weapons you earned in the game/level, a sort of final exam.

Overall a pretty good list, I'm glad S.T.A.L.K.E.R., a flawed game but nevertheless a game I enjoyed a lot, got a nod. Persona 3 will come out here in a couple of months, so I can't judge it, but from what I've seen, I'll buy it at the release date.

Puzzle quest got a mention to,and that's cool, because it's awesome.
I only played it by downloading it to my 360, but it's great.

Most Innovative Game: World in Conflict (PC)

Lolz.

But on Game of the Year this is one of the first times I've found myself agreeing with Gamespot. However, I'm still looking for someone to give Galaxy best soundtrack as well.

I am dissapointed to not see Halo 3 on there. At least for the multiplayer category. I know this is blasphemy to a lot of you, but the fact is that Halo 3 has one of the best multiplayer abilities.

I have trouble giving Mass Effect best original music. Mostly because it sounded like the soundtrack from a third rate 80's sci-fi movie. But I guess that's personal preference. And I'm really not sure what I would have chosen over it.

I think there was a lot better this year and I think Call Of Duty 4 and Rock Band slaughtered it multiplayer-wise. Plus, the story and single player was pretty mediocre, graphics pretty good, but no where near say Bioshock or COD4. It was just overall outgunned this year, imo.

I agree with this. The soundtrack wasn't that interesting.

I strongly disagree. I love call of duty 4 but it really ticks me off I can't get in with a guest. I haven't played Rock Band but I can't stand Guitar Hero. I just don't see the lore of it.

I had way more fun with Call Of Duty then Halo. Though, that was true on my side for all the installments, I always enjoyed COD over Halo. I agree that it sucked that you couldn't go online with someone, but that was only one kink in the whole. I played way more COD4 multi player then Halo.

And I hate Guitar Hero as well, but I love singing and playing the drums on Rock Band, I definitely had way more pure fun playing that then the usual FPS fare.

It all comes down to personal opinion of course, but I'm glad Halo didn't get any awards honestly, it's a bit above average and nothing more to me. To each his own, as always, of course.

I don't disagree with the last award "best game of the year" decision but I was expecting any of these

Crysis

bioshock

to win

Well I just got COD4 so there is still some time, but I can't imagine I will play it near as much as Halo. I think that is largely because my friends our still playing Halo. I have one friend who players with his roommate; he won't ever get COD4 because they can't play together. That is what bugs me about it.

Having said that I do really enjoy the game. The campaign far surpasses Halos. I would just say multi player wise it blows COD4 out of the water so far, and this is largely because of the lack of ability of a guest.

I rarely play splitscreen online so I guess it doesn't really make that big of a difference to me.

Uhm, well....given that the whole point was that it was supposed to sound like an 80's synth-heavy Sci-Fi movie soundtrack...I'd say it succeeded brilliantly.

Seriously, they were deliberately going for that "sound."

And truth be told, having listened to the soundtrack separately from the game, it's really pretty good. Better than one might realize while playing through the game.

Mario Galaxy won GOTY honors is a little surprising to be honest. It is not to say it is a bad game (quite the opposite it is one of the funniest games I have every played), but I was expecting Bioshock, or Mass Effect to take that spot.
