Hi guys,

this is my first post to the CBR forums, although i read it for a few months now, i`m thankful for all of the valuable infos to all of you guys. thanks very much.

so the situation is this:

i`m relatively new to comics. i read mainly vertigo mini/maxi series until now. i decided to jump into the DCU. i just finished the Infinite Crisis series, and i don`t know where to go. the reason i chose this trade, is that this way i can meet a lot of characters and perhaps i can pick a few that i like. then read some ongoing based on them. that was the plan. actually, i couldn`t chose anyone. it`s not that i don`t like them, just there was too many of them in IC :). i need to learn more about their personality.

I`m interested in the preInfiniteCrisis stuff like the four mini series (Villains United, Day of Vengeance, ...), because i felt that IC was a little messy without these. For example the big eye machine thing said Batman that he is his "creator". but how? what happened? i bet it`s explained in the Omac Project TP. it`s worth to collect all preIC books? and if i buy them, i will have the same feeling like now, that i miss the prologue of the countdown to Infinite Crisis?? i hope you understand my dilemma :).

the other possibility .. i forgot the books around IC and continue with the 52 trades. this way i can meet more characters to decide who is the perfect hero/team for me. after i have found it/them, i`ll continue to read 52 and a few ongoing stuff, or back issues/trades of finished runs.

so which path should i choose? is it worth to read backward or not?

thanks very much, sorry for the long post. oh and sorry for my bad english!

52 and the other IC-related titles are good reads if you're interested in reading more along the lines of Infinite Crisis. You might even want to check out Crisis on Infinite Earths which would enlighten you more about the multiverse and the story of Earth2 Superman, Superboy Prime, etc.

But if you're looking to see what DC character you're most interested in the best thing for you to do is probably just pick a character and ask if their current titles are any good or what trades from the character's past you might be interested in.

id say just try picking like 3 or 4 books that look good. read a little bit of it then if u like it keep reading it and if you dont like it stop reading it, and pick another book.

The one thing you cant do is pick up countdown. And 52 is a good story, only thing its about not about main characters but kinda b-list characters.

i don`t think i would go back to crisis on infinite earths, that is just to far away.

i think i just move on with 52. this way i can check out the b-list characters, just as matt_hatyber told. i think it was a good idea to skip batman/superman/wonder woman for this series. at least for me. i know about them, so i can search for others.

about the characters. i know i like batman. i always liked him. i`m sure i will read a lot of books around his family and gotham city.

another character that i always read here in the forum is green lantern and the sinestro corp war stuff. is it that awesome? everyone talks about it.

oh and the IC stuff. i should read the tie in minis? it`s worth to read?

You can get into Green Lantern by reading "Green Lantern: Rebirth", followed by the regular series. The Sinestro story starts in the "Sinestro Corps War" one-shot and then in Green Lantern #21-25. It can be read without reading the rest of the series if you know the basics of Green Lantern. The Sinestro Corps story is extremely good but the series varies in quality.

Read 52 , its a cracker .

I started reading comics after a 10 year gap , and missed infinite crisis.

DC has tried weekly comics so many times and failed , (see Action Comics weekly run) but 52 is superb, uses 2ndary characters touches a wide range of of the universe. Fills in a lot of gaps. It is great

the 4 mini series before IC are actually good. There good reads.

Gl right now is my favorite book. Pick up rebirth TPB. Then get the sinestro corps TPB. the sinestro corps was probally the best book of the year.

okay.

i don`t know, i have a strange feeling about the green lantern and corps stuff. the story is in space right? i mean, they fly through the galaxy. or i`m i wrong about this? i ask this because there was some space stuff in IC but i didn`t get them. it was really confusing.

what i looking for (i guess :) ) is stories with mystery, detective stuff with some dark feeling, but not horror. i know it`s totally like batman, but there is something like this with other characters? today i found a series. it`s Gotham Central. i read that it was canceled after 40 issues. they were good?

anyway .. i think i`ll buy the four minis and countdown to infinite crisis. read them and move on with 52.

sorry for the lot of questions and confusion i have, but i have no other place to ask :( i live in Hungary, middle Europe and here the comic culture is really bad. we have no comic store here. only an online shop so i buy my comics from England and because the shipping cost it`s only the trades that are really worth to buy (for me).

thanks for the answers guys, keep `em coming! ;)

Gotham Central was outstanding! Probably one of the best things DC has put out this decade.

IMO Gotham Underground sucks, but there's only been two issues so it could get better.

My suggestion is to read Booster Gold. It's only 5 issues deep and it's about Booster Gold traveling back in time to fix anamolies. You'll get to see some of the big events in DC and it's fairly easy to pick up. Everything is explained and there's not much that needs to be read before. PLis it's really funny and it's currently being written by Geoff Johns, the same person who wrote all of the current Green Lantern stuff and IC.

If you do check it out, read 52 first, otherwise some surprises will be spoiled.

Nobody was talking about Gotham Underground. He asked about Gotham Central.

Pick up brave and the bold. eveyr issue you see 2 new heros. so you see the many characters that dc has. And if you like any of them pick up there book if they have it.

Gl is about space people. Intergalactic Police.

Definitely get the Gotham Centrals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotham_Central) they were great. In fact if your goal is just good comics you can't go wrong with Brubaker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Brubaker) who had a great run on "Catwoman" (and now writes the only comics I buy from Marvel) or Greg Rucka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Rucka) who writes "Checkmate" now. You could also check out Gail Simone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gail_Simone) who just finished a great run on "Birds of Prey" actually those articles I posted have some great titles listed in them. :)
