View Full Version : Giving Up on the Black Panther

I've been following the Black Panther series since Civil War. He was great in that story arc, and afterwards when he joined the Fantastic Four I expected he'd have a lot of opportunity to shine.
But now it's time for me to give up on that hope. The story is so tedious to follow. I don't get how you can have a great character but the character can only really show his worth in major cross overs and not his/her own title. It's kind of like Nightwing. He was great in the Outsiders, but in his own title, Terrible.
Does anyone still read Black Panther? I guess I shouldn't have expected much from him joining the Fantastic Four. That title has always been a snooze too.

Black Panther is not enough of its own book which is pretty sad because the character is cool plus he is dragging Storm a long with him. Two top notch characters and look at them. They star in every other characters stories except their own. Although I can't complain about seeing the Thing and Torch in this. Funny how they decided to stretch this storyline extra long when in FF they have already left.

I haven't enjoyed Black Panther since Hudlin came on broad. Its been one crossover tie-in after the other and arcs that have a flood of guest stars. It refuses to stand on it's own.

Buy some back issues of Priest's run on Black Panther to see how he should be, the current stuff can't hold a candle to it.
Oh an just to give a heads up to anybody who doesn't know (is there anyone left?) the Huddlin fan club will be here arguing in three...two...one....
Priests BP really was a lot better.
That said, there are a few nice Hudlin BP story arcs. I thought his Civil War stuff was fun, and the zombies story was pretty cool too.
But nothing else has really wowed me.

Apprently in the next arc...the one coming out in March he returns to Wakanda and you get a more original story, political intrigue, stuff like that. The cover is pretty decent too. It might be worth checking that one out. Hell, I might buy it too.

the zombies wore me out, my give a rat's ass meter on BP is on Empty.
Didn't pick up, or even flip through the last two issues.
Even with the retcons it started out with such promise, now MEH.
that's right Reginald...meh.

I think the problem has been that the arcs havent spent time showing how kick ass BP is. Instead many fans walk away feeling that Hudlin is trying to make him perfect. BP is basically Marvel's Batman but with a crown, like Batman he needs to be shown to feel extreme pain, have his ass kicked, and in the end come out on top due to him being the total package of human strength and intelligence. The book seems to be progressing though as the previews show BP captured and in pain, thus human. I wont give up on the book yet, I am too big of BP fan to do so.

Yeah I'm tired of Hudlin and BP being just a gateway to other story arcs from other titles, it needs to be its own thing.
I'd suggest Marvel think about bringing Chris Priest back and pairing him with an A-list artist maybe David Finch or Ron Garney.

If Ororo wasn't in this book I'd never have bought it, and regretabbly while she is in the book I can't give it up
I stuck with it through the first year. Then it degenerated into 'Black Panther starring fill-in-the-blank hero.'
I thought the initial arc was pretty strong, but man did this book peter out quickly. I think BP is one of those characters who for whatever reason just can't support his own book anymore (Ghost Rider, Blade and She-Hulk suffer from this affliction, too).

I loved Priest's run. I haven't read it since Hudlin took over. It just didn't appeal to me at all. I liked his appearance in FF and I got the wedding issue, but it wasn't enough to get me on board. It's a shame because Priest really showed how cool BP could be.
