With the new year upon us I was just curious what books people were deciding to drop from Marvel and what you might be replacing them with. For me there are a few that are getting the ax just because I have not been enjoying them at all.
She Hulk - Gave David a chance and it just hasn't been good.
New Warriors - This book just isn't going anywhere. Gave it the first arc and even all the secret identies beeing show has not saved this book.
Exiles - Claremont has turned one of my favorite books into his own personal pet character spankfest. A truly horrible book and the relaunch looks to be more of the same.
Excaliber - Another Claremont train wreck witch I kept reading hoping it would get better. If the new writer can amke it work without making it become the Pete Wisdom and freinds book I might check it out latter on.
All the Spider Man books - Already dropped them all when One More Day started, but even if I hadn't the Amazing 3 times a month thing just was not apealing to me at all. I think you are going to end up with alot of really subpar storylines with a format like that.
and finally Fantastic Four - I am not a fan of Millar/Hitch in any way. I do like some Millar when he is playing in the Ultimate U, but his main universe stuff just always leaves me cold. That and I don't belive for a second that this book will keep its mothly schedule no matter what they say. Hitch is just not capable of it or if he is he just doesn't care about trying to get it out monthly.
The only book so far that I know is on my mustbuy list for the new year is The Twelve mini series.
I just went through this very exercise a month ago. I no longer have time to read 30 titles, so I trimmed it to about 12. I dropped:
-all the X titles save for Astonishing
-Hulk
-Initiative
-Punisher
-Runaways
-Ultimate X-men
-Ms. Marvel
-Fantastic Four
-Black Panther
-All minis (If I really want a mini I'll pick it up in trade)

I'm dropping pretty much all the X-books (maybe except Astonishing - Warren Ellis, pls save the X-Verse),
and i'm waiting to see how Texeira works with Moon Knight (not too optimistic).
I never bought any Spider-Man or FF titles to begin with.

I've pretty much stopped buying a lot of Marvel titles after Civil War.

I don't think I'm dropping anything.
I stopped picking up bad books I have no interest in a long time ago. Other books I'm not entirely satisfied with I'll still be picking up out of interest and I'll probably continue to buy the Intiative series sporadically.

I'm dropping the Spider-Man series as soon as One More Day paysoff.
I really think this could have been done in just one issue. It's been done in one issue before. Myphysito doesn't have to torment a hero for three issues before he screws them. Plus, we all know what's coming... we know who's going to bite it.
I'm also bailing on Hulk. I don't like that kid hanging along with Herc. But they do have good chemistry. Don't like a title named for Hulk, but not featuring him at all...it's all about the others in his title now.
Ditto for Cap, except THAT's really good...and so I'm staying with it and DD!

My getting *any* book directly related to Spider-Man is pending the resolution of OMD. Outlook not so good.
I'm going to give the Aftersmash books one issue.
Gonna add the new X-Force for amusements sake. The Wolverine/Warpath thing strikes me as amusing so far.
I think I'm fairly satisfied with Marvel otherwise, at least I don't remember any other books that were on thin ice.

Marvel Comics Presents - Charging me a dollar more for serials I may or may not like with characters I may or may not like just because it has a thicker cover? Not happening.
Friendly Neighborhood and Sensational Spider-Man, New X-Men - Cancellations
That's about it from Marvel.

Because I do a lot of picking 'n choosing, I don't have that many regular series. However, of the ones I'm currently reading (regularly or temporarily), I think I will be dropping the following series:
-Incredible Hulk (I picked it up starting w/ Planet Hulk and I'll drop it after this Hercules arc)
-Mighty Avengers (The team's just not all that intriguing)
-New Avengers (This one was hard b/c I like the characters, but the whole Hood thing is turning me off. If they change routes then I'll reconsider)
-New Warriors (Despite the initial excitement of getting to see Jubilee again and even after the ID reveals, it's not doing much for me)
-Nova (Originally a residual pickup b/c of Annihilation, I think I'll drop it post-Conquest)
-Thor (It's good right now, but since I was never a real fan of Thor I think I'll drop it after the initial arc or whenever Coipel leaves)
-Some of the X-Men line-up (Not sure which as I'll determine this when the post-MC lineups are announced)
Omega Alpha
12-22-2007, 10:34 AM
I dropped recently:
New Warriors
616 Spidey books
Incredible Hulk, which is now Hercules, because I can't stand Cho.
Uncanny X-men, but picked up for MC, and will probably stay after.
I'm almost dropping:
Ms. Marvel
Ultimates
X-men, now retitled Legacy, because the book will be most likely focused on Xavier.
Plus JLA at DC.
CaptainCanada
12-22-2007, 10:41 AM
I don't know what X-titles I'll be buying post-MC, since it's unclear what they'll be like, but I don't imagine I'll keep buying every one; X-Men: Legacy and X-Factor being the most likely drops.

I've dropped most of my titles. I think of it less like dropping a bunch of titles and more like just getting the ones I really want. I pretty much only get Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and almost anything Avengers. So I've dropped....
New Warriors
The Order
Incredible Hulk
Punisher
Avengers Classic
Nova
Ghost Rider
Several minis...

After the end of Civil War I dropped all but my Spider-Man books and Incredible Hulk. Now after WWH I've dropped the Hulk and it looks like after OMD I'll be dropping Spider-Man. This means no more Marvel for me.

I've already dropped most of my Marvel books. The last to go were Thunderbolts when Ellis/Deodato took over and Mighty Avengers because the quality of the issues wasn't worth the ridiculous wait. What little I do buy these days is purely in trade - X-Factor, Ultimate Spider-Man, Daredevil, Captain America.
I will, however, be picking up Clandestine. I'll check out the Millar/Hitch FF and New Exiles when they're out and make my decision then.

Nova: The Initiative tie-ins aside, I haven't been enjoying this title very much, so it's time to drop it and seek something else. I feel short-changed: I was hoping Marvel would let this series breathe a bit, let the writers go creative. But so far we've had 4 issues tying into the obnoxious Conquest event: I didn't even have the patience to complete the minis.
The first issue out of Conquest presented us with a space dog, who certainly will be a more interesting character than the Kree Nova the writers created and killed in 3 issues: I think it had something to do with motivation for Nova, making us care, or someting like that, I'm not sure, I don't know why writers bother killing characters anymore.
And the last issue gave us Space Zombies. Unfortunately I belong to that small minority for whom zombie is synonymous with cancellation. And the thought the series is about to tie in back with Conquest is the last straw for me. So there.

Its very sad to hear you're dropping Nova for some other title; this series has been excellent so far; far better that other "long-haul" titles like the various Avenger titles that I have collected since 1980 which don't today have the same vibe back then. But to give up a title on the pretext of zombies appearing in it: well that's a new excuse! Personally I don't have a problem with zombies at all, werewolves, vampires and subbuci. Okay there's a 50/50 opinion regarding Conquest too; I'll admit it isn't as good as Annihilation, but in fairness it's still way too early to be pre-judgemental; we're only at issue 2 now so until the whole run ends I, or any reader, can't pre-conclude how the entire thing will pan out. Back to Nova; it's odd you're leaving just as Paul Pelletier is coming on board as regular pencillier; since the announcment I've noted on majority of boards, even at my own Nova blog, that the news is most welcome and is in fact generating new readership; you've may be making a rash decision. If it was me I'd stick to at least issue 12 to see the first Pelletier issues, the end of the "Conquest" arc and then make a desision cause I'm sure next year DNA will up the ante considerably. Daz.
PS: I'm sticking to Mighty/New Avengers to see the start of Secret Invasion, but even if Skrull Zombies appear beforehand (cause that Electra corpse sure looks and smells like one in the making) I'll carry on.

Some people seem to love The Order, I dropped it on the 3rd issue to make room for my other title. It just did nothing for me. New warriors is on the verge of being dropped, other than that my 20odd pull list is remaining pretty much the same after new year.
She-Hulk is the only thing I might consider dropping. It's lost it's fun charm since Slott left it.

Thats another problem I have coming up. I don't read any of the Avengers books (Avengers, Mighty, Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, Initiative) so the Secret Invasion thing is probably going to be a red flag for me. I think any title that is a crossover with that event will be left on the shelf even if it is a book I usally read. Marvel burnt me too bad with the very poor World War Hulk to be interested in any crossover right now.

Having just reread my post, I know I offered several reasons for dropping Nova. Zombies was just one of many.
I also don't know how to respond to your suggestion that I should wait for Conquest to end before judging it: I bought the Prologue, I bought 3 issues of each mini, plus 4 issues of Nova tie ins: that means I bought 14 parts of the event; excluding the 6 issues of the Conquest mini, I have in fact read around four fifths of the event. I believe I read enough to form a judgement on the event's quality. Come on, If I wanted to be ripped off for months without a good payoff I would be buying Countdown :D
The art, which I liked in Nova, seldom affects my enjoyment of a book: so the coming of a new artist would make no difference to me. My concerns are with the writing, which is lacking due to needless crossovers, pointless deaths, underwhelming enemies, and few and awful supporting characters. Really, I never read anything by DnA prior to Nova, but judging from what I've read so far, I have no faith in their improving next year.

Nova is pretty close to my drop list as well, the writing has been really uneven, its like every three issues I really like 1 and the other two I can't stand. This just might be growing pains for this series I am going to wait for AC (which I love) to end then I will decide.

Good for you considering to get Nova! You'll love it, Trust me. I've folowed the character for 30 years; okay he's had up's and down's like any other Marvel character has but the present series is good enough for me to spend £3.00/$2.99 on a month despite some moans from other posters!

I not going to pretend every issue is absolutely great; some aspects are always open to improvement and me and other Nova fans do "disect" each issue and make our own comments and opinions on the present run at Nova Prime. In all though anyone of us can say quite proudly that comparing previous runs of Nova since 1976, the present one is, by far, the best. But even I won't say Nova is a bad comic; nor is it a perfect comic either; Just a good enjoyable bit of Marvel cosmic served up on a monthly basis; and that is good enough for me. So I'm glad you're sticking with it too till the end of Conquest (which I also enjoy but not as much as Annihilation, but I'll see it throught to the end, unlike Civil War). But I'm optmistic that there's milage in the book yet. Daz.

Okay. Here me out. I bought all the issues of the minis plus the present 2 Conquest mini themselves, plus the ongoing Nova series running parallel. That's 20 issues so far and counting. And I don't feel ripped off at all considering I've spent £60.00.
Now as far as the minis are concerned I will say they varied in quality. I loved Nova and Quasar. Least liked Wraith and Starlord was 80/40. You may think Ko-Rel's death was "pointless"; I think it was inspired and totally unexpected that a new character was killed so quicky and without any warning. Gave poinancy to the story and will I suspect be a referral point to Nova's development after Conquest concudes. And which supporting characters are awful? Cause Cosmo is inspired. Okay I see you ref to crossovers; I agree I'd prefer standalone tales/self contained arcs myself than crossovers but I've liked Conquest so far and as is I like the Technarch a lot from my X-Men days so as is I'm looking forward to seeing Kvch. I've followed DNA writing for a while since their days at 2000AD with Sinister Dexter; and have always found their stories with good plot ideas and style; could be worse, Bendis could be writing Nova! In all I love Nova; that's me. You're entitled to your opinion as I am mine. I'm an optimist so I'll see how things fare in 2008. Merry Xmas! Daz.

Uncanny -- okay

Recommendations for DC906270-BIL:
Nova is a good everyman character (like Spidey) but in space and the new series has been fun so far. Moon Knight is another street level character that has been a pretty enjoyable title as well. Runaways is a great team book that is extremely fun to read. If you like crime fiction or film noir, I can't recommend Criminal highly enough. I'd start off with trades of any of those if you want to give them a try.

Looks like
Black Panther
Heroes For Hire

I prefer the last NW mini to this series, it was fun and the story went somewhere.
H4H stopped being fun too, the whole Humbug thing...& Shang-Chi freaking out over getting some lovin'. But it looks like the team broke up anyway so, moot point.
I should have liked the zombies in BP, but it seemed like a 10 issue arc, all this dimension hopping is like a bad Excalibur.

I'm actually going to net more purchases overall, so I need to cut a few books. I buy a few minis throughout a year, and when it's over, if I really like it -- Books of Doom as one example -- I find myself thinking how sweet it would be to have the entire series collected in the trade... even though I have every issue.I've dropped most of my titles. I think of it less like dropping a bunch of titles and more like just getting the ones I really want.Great perspective. I too, want to 'streamline' my choices and buy fewer issues of 'okay' stuff and keep it to stuff I 'must read'.
So, I'm dropping...
Daredevil -- I totally enjoy Bru's writing. He got me to read Captain America and Daredevil. Two characters I had little interest in previously. This is especially the case with Daredevil. I just don't have the history of caring about Matt, Foggy, Dakota, etc. The art is well done, but not my favorite style. I'm going to bow out soon (probably after Mr. Fear arc is complete). I still feel that Captain America is one of Marvel's very best books right now, so it's nothing against Brubaker per se. I just never had much connection with Daredevil and his cast of characters.
Powers -- I got into this because I enjoy Bendis' writing on other Marvel books. Started somewhere like #12 of the current volume. It just hasn't pulled me in like I thought it might. It's good, just not good enough for me to keep waiting for it to blow me away.
And adding...
Thor -- I've been reading since #1 of this volume. Time to put it on the pull list. I for one have truly enjoyed everything I've read by JMS, and have faith that this is going to be excellent. That Coipel is leaving is a bummer... but JMS writing is what brought me along in the first place.
Thinkin' about adding...
She-Hulk -- I purchased a few of Dan Slott's issues from the current volume. It was alright. I much prefered his Thing (there, I said it). His writing on this book didn't engross me so much, so I drove on. Now, I for one am already grieving PAD's departure from writing Spider-Man. But I have read the first two of his She-Hulk issues and thoroughly enjoyed them. I like what he brings in terms of humor and drama... and his love for the characters. I know there's no easy way to describe how he is different in Slott in those respects... because I know Slott brings humor, drama, and loves the characters as well... but I just enjoy what PAD does more. I'll buy the next few, and if it doesn't disappoint, I'll add this to the pull list.
Wonder Woman -- The only DC book I read, or have ever read. No interest in crossing over really. I got on with the beginning of the current volume when Heinberg started writing it, and the Dodsons started artwork. The well-documented inconsistencies made it a tad rough to get through (personally I think Amazons Attack (huh?) and several writers taking this on 'mid-story' really messed this up... ala DDM, I'm blaming editorial ;) ). I didn't find it totally horrible, though. The praise for Simone and the well established love she has for the character, coupled with the two books by her I have read so far, have me confident this ship is about to be righted.
--- and isn't staying on with Amazing Spider-Man basically like adding books anyway? I told you I was going to have a net gain overall.

The Order: I absolutely hate it, LOL.
The Order is actually the one good title to come out of CW, IMO. Considering how much I loathe what CW has dome to the MU, this is a bit of a surprise.
All Spider-Man titles. Can't support what they're doing to the characters.
Avengers titles I'll stick with for now. Bendis still writes some of the best dialogue in comics, but I admit that his tendency to take six issues to tell the same story Geoff Johns or Mark Waid could tell in one or two really annoys me. As cool as it is to see the Avengers argue over which female supervillain is the hottest or whether fullscreen is better than widescreen, when you combine that with all the splash pages and two-page spreads his books have, there isn't a lot of room left for things to actually happen.
Thor is the one Marvel book right now that is on my must-read list. The ass-kicking he delivered to Iron Man was my single favorite moment in comics in 2007.

Lets see Well I've been satisfied with the current books I've been reading but They're a few titles that I have just seem to lose interest in and no matter how I try I just can't see myself continuing to read them they are.
Cable & Deadpool: I really enjoyed this series during the early issues but It has since issue #38 I've seen to have lost interest in the story And seem to find it boring (this is probaly just me) I will give it another 2 arcs before I make a final decision of axing this.
Ghost Rider: Ever since they decided to bring this series back I thought it was going to be exciting but I just don't like the direction that they have taken this book the plots can be a lot better. I will give this one more arc to turn around.
I feel bad dropping these titles but it opens the door for the new stuff which I'm really excited about I will most likely be adding these to my Pull list
Hulk: I was going to add this either way I love The Hulk and the Creative team for this title. I just simply can't wait any longer if this is anywhere near as good or perhaps better than Hulk Gray it's gets a thumbs up by me.
X-Force This new title seems very promising spinning the from Messiah Complex. With the creative team Kyle and Yost,X-Men's most Feral Characters and the Bold Photo realistic drawings of Clayton Crain(his Sensational Spidey work was Amazing). This is going to be a gritty yet compelling title at the same time I'm definitely jumping on board when it comes out.

Well I find this thread funny looking at how every other poster is dropping Amazing Spider-Man after One More Day, I will too. Books I've dropped are Spider-Man (just got OMD part 4 and threw up in my mouth a bit) and dropped Runways once Wedon took over. I will be adding X-Force to my pull list though... looks awesome. I dropped Thunderbolts but the previews for the next issue look awesome, so I'm gonna grab that one too.

All spiderman titles. OMD is the hurricane katrina of comic book moments. Every reader now knows that the continuity of the books they cherish can be erased with a wave of mephisto's hand.

I agree totally, Excelsior but we can't blame Mephisto- he was acting out of character just as Pete and MJ were. The true cause of this nonchalant bird-flipping to the fans goes by the name of Joe Quesada!!!

I think OMD in Spiderman is going to make a lot of people Pirate the comic as to not dedicate sales to the title.
Just remember guys, pirating is bad and pirating one book will probably make you pirate most books

Exiles - not been that great for a while but CC, his dialogue and the new cast are just bad. I'll miss Morph :(
Incredible Hulk - Picked it up from Planet Hulk, hated World War Hulk. May look into it again when the son of Hulk stuff comes to light.
Black Panther - now that Storm is back amongst the X-crew and the FF are gone I have no need to buy this any more
I'll give New Warriors a bit longer. The concept is good and the dialogue is improving...the cast is just so messed up.
I like the Runaways too much to abandon them...I just hope it's not too late for the new writer to save the book.

Oh I hated the end with a passion. It ruined everything good that had been set up with the Hulk in the last year or so just to clear the ground for Loebs not-hulk Hulk book. I have no faith at all in Loeb to be able to write a monthly book set in main continuety that will be any good. He is good at self contained stuff set in the past or in a elseworlds type setting, but his main univerese stuff is just usally garbabge full of plot holes and WTF?!? moments.

I was seriously considering dropping The Order too, but there's just something about it that's still drawing me in. It's not exactly a must-read for me, but for some reason I'm still intrigued. I'll wait until this first arc finishes b4 deciding on it. I want to see who stays a member and who, if anyone, will join.

Incredible Hulk

Mighty Avengers (too poor for two Bendis books)
Avengers: The initiative
Otherwise I'm picking up FF when Millar jumps on

I'll actually be picking up Amazing and adding it to my "pull list", which just consists of the stuff that gets first pick off the racks. Then, depending on what it all adds up to, I sample other titles that wouldn't normally make it into the bag.
Might be dropping New Avengers and New Warriors. Will be adding Captain America and Daredevil after I've picked up the recent trades and properly caught up with their stories. I've been slow in that department.

What am I dropping?
Guess.
Maybe the Hulk, too. WHo is the red guy?
I'm always keeping the X-men.
Man, that book is great. Not always great, but somebody (Q know who) has yet to ruin it, even the House of M demutinizing.
As if the X-men and their fans so, I defy your retconning ruining abilitiy 'Q Know who'.
I rebuke you!

I have dropped :
- Captain America : I didn't like the general way of this relaunch, so I have dropped it just before the death... Brubaker would have to stay on Catwoman, or something else...
- The order : for me, that is what I call a "swindle" (perhaps this word is too much, but it is the traduction from my foreign language...). Because when I had preodered it in singles this thing had been presented as "The Champions"... And few months later, it was not any more "Champions"...
And I thought it would be new stories of the old Champions, or new Champions... But never a title completely related with the Civil War thing that I have tried to escape because I hate this way... SiGh...
And the problem with preordering singles is the delay... So when I receive the #1, I have already preodered more 5 issues...
- New Avengers : because although I liked the relationship between characters as always in the work of Bendis (fun with dialogues...), finaly I have understood that I completely lost my time and my money...
- MCP : I thought that it would be real anthologies stories... Means no current characters... I expected no superhero but more fantasy, or SF (as the first Amazing Fantasy, Tales to Astonish...).
The only thing in wich I feel an interest, it's Immonen's Hellcat... I have dropped after.
I'm going to add :
- The new Clandestine. For Alan Davis. But not in singles. Now I'm completely bored in buying singles. I wait for tpbs.
I would want more Alan Davis' "personal work"... (I don't read X-titles...).
- perhaps future tpbs of Amazing Spider-Man with the very condition that the Green Goblin(s) is (are) involved...:evilsmile
I'm keeping :
- Spider-Girl & MC² minis. Because there is the Goblin legacy (Normie-Phil Urich...), and I was very fan of the DeFalco/Mac Daniel's New Green Goblin...
Well, in that particulary case, I have to preorder the singles... Although there is now tpb in normal size for the "Amazing Spider-Girl"... But I have to... To support it...
- Hulk. (the real Hulk... Not Hercule... I'm confused with the new title and the old... ?). Now in tpb.
I have decided to dropp the Panini/French version of Incredible Hulk (I was reading Hulk in french for many years) because they are doing bad work... In this case the format of publication for Planet Hulk (a sort of big tpb with very very bad paper) is so much rotted that I had to give up after 2.5 illegibles issues, so much as well on the drawings with cause of the quality of paper, as on the size of the text.
They have decided to reduce half the size of the text so that I just can't read any more, ok, so I have decided to boycott them !
- Thunderbolts : although I hate that Marvel has fired Fabian Niecieza (or it was his decision ?) from my beloved TBolts, I have decided to keep this title because there is almost always the same concept after all (formely vilains who have to do more "good things"... But... lol).
And of course there one of my favorite character of the MU : Norman Osborn. I very hope that the Goblin's spirit is going to re-emerge... hehehehehehehe...
- Ghost Rider. Tpb or simili...
- Silver Surfer & Dr Strange but without JMStraz. Sorry but I don't like his work very much...
- And I continue to buy the very old good thing as Masterworks Strange Tales/Tales to Astonish/Tales of Suspens/ect, and Masterworks or Omnibus Iron man, Hulk, Dr Strange, Silver Surfer.
I would like in 2008 :
Also, I would like Masterworks or Omnibus for oldies Monster of Frankenstein/Tomb of Dracula/Werewolf by night...
Because I have feared with the Essentials format... I need colors and the bigger size for draws and for text... I can't change my eyes... :(
BV72 who hopes that 2008 will be the year of Green Goblins... :evilsmile

Just cancelled my mail order account for monthly comics, which means for all intents and purposes I just dropped everything...
Which included:
- Moon Knight. Issue #13 wasn't bad, but I just don't care enough to follow it to a new creative team.
- Runaways. Whedon's arc lacked drama, and certainly wasn't worth the ludicrous delays. Shame, as I think they were hoping this run would put Runaways into the top 10, but the delays may have killed it stone dead instead. Once Terry Moore takes over and the Whedon fans leave the series, the sales numbers might look a little poor.
- The Order. Gave it a few issues, but nope.
- Amazing Spider-Man. Not because of One More Day (I don't care if he's married, I don't even care whether he's straight or not, just give me decent stories), but because I am not interested enough to buy it three times a month. If I want Spidey I'll read Ultimate, which has been better than this series almost since the very beginning.
(I'm actually having trouble remembering what comics I buy now, which hardly bodes well for them.)
Anyway, series I might keep going in monthly: Captain America and Thunderbolts.
And in trade/hardcover: Ultimate Spidey, Punisher MAX, Powers, Immortal Iron Fist, New Avengers.

X-men - First class I like this book, but with money a few have got to be cut.
Everything DC - Its just not friendly to anyone only buying a few books a week. I enjoy Marvel and Image books a lot more.
On the Cusp:
New Avengers - I just don't know, it has not been very good as of late.

I can honestly say that the Tomb of Dracula books look so much better in blac and white than they ever did in color. I love the 3 ToD Essentials I have, and even after seeing some of the old books in color I still think the books just look so much better in black and white.
