as far as OTHER artists goes, what songs do you think deserve to be added to that list?
Chiasm

Closer - Nine Inch Nails. NIN should have a song on that list given they were huge in the 90's and Closer is probably NIN's most well known song even if most people probably think its named something else.
And it doesn't look like they wanted to put multiple songs by the same artist. Had they then both Pearl Jam and Nirvana should have been there more. Grunge in general seems to be under represented which is wrong because love it or hate it grunge was the biggest thing to hit rock music in the 90's because it killed hair metal and ushered in a whole slew of new bands and paved the way for music that didn't rely on image. U2 and Metallica and REM are also underrepresented.

Couple of real stinkers on that list dude!
A few song's that should be on the list but aren't (UK music seems to be hideously under-represented here)
Drugs Don't Work ~ The Verve
Fools Gold ~ Stone roses
Live Forever ~ Oasis (not that shite, wonderwall)
Summertime ~ Jazzy Jeff & fresh Prince (Leagues ahead of getting jiggy with it)
Protection ~ Massive Attack
Optimistic ~ Sounds Of Blackness
Walking on the Sun ~ Smash Mouth

The problem is it's not a "100 greatest pop songs of the '90s" list, although I guess we should assume as much with VH1. Otherwise, this list is massively incomplete, almost in an aggressive attempt to be as oblivious as possible.
I think whoever compiled this list did the best job with the rap picks. Not all of them are perfect, but the list showcases a wide variety of rap artists. Their rock picks are less logical. For one thing, I don't see how you can leave out "Everlong" by Foo Fighters and "Interstate Love Song" by Stone Temple Pilots.
I also believe limiting one song to each artist is a vain philosophy of fairness that results in not mentioning essential tracks.

And therein lies the problem.
If they'd called the list "100 Most Popular Songs Of The 90s", that would be more accurate. But it's "Greatest". You really think you're gonna find much greatness in the mainstream?

A surprising amount of that list (maybe, I dunno, 30%) would be on my own personal top 100, although they're all in the wrong places.
But if, rather than mere quality, they were looking for a bunch of songs that evoke the 90s in the same way that certain songs will always evoke the 80s ("I Melt With You), 70s ("Theme from Shaft"), or 60s ("Good Vibrations"), they did a great job. In ten to twenty years, all those songs will be cool again.

in fact if critics chose all the picks then we would just have wall to wall alt rock songs, but OTOH if the casual fans voted we would have a list full of cheesy dance/pop songs. either way metal,hip-hop,and R&B is gonna get the short end of the stick.

when i realized this i wasn't as upset as before, because at first i thought these was critic picks. so basically its our fault for not voting.

Looks about right if the list came about from voting. A number of very good songs on there, with a lot of crap, but crap that's at least catchy.
Of course, Bogart's list will be better, if he makes one, but did we really expect anything good from a VH1 list?

For me, this list brought back a lot of memories. Indeed, watching the countdown, i started to remember distinctive moments concerning the songs, not so much the first time I heard them, but the rather the time I first noticed them. To me, it seems like it was just yesterday that these songs came out, not over a decade ago. It REALLY freaked me out to know how old some songs are starting to become. Are you meaning to say that Destiny's Child "Say My Name" and "Silm Shady" are nearly 8 yrs. old?! HOLY CRAP! Halfway into the list I started to realize just how old I've become  , and how much of a 90s kid I am. :D
Furthermore, it was nice to see what some of these artists are doing now. It's interesting to see how some of these crazy and wild artists of that time have settled down and started families.
Finally, i find it interesting that now I can appreciate songs that I really hated as a high school kid, like the Goo Goo Dolls "Iris."
As for what songs should or shouldn't have been on the list, I'm not too picky, since I'm not that much of a diehard fan of music, though I must say I was VERY glad to see U2 make it not only onto the list, but at the #2 position. ;)

I am surprised they chose Creep over Fake Plastic Trees, which I thought was a much more popular song.
The most glaring omission I see is Sublime's What I Got.

"Wrong Way" was a much more catchy song.
Wonderwall only at 35? Blasphemy! Check out LastFm - that song hasn't left the top 20 since the site inception - the only song to manage that feat, and considering it's over 10 years old, quite an accomplishment.

I think a better idea is to include all the top 40 hits, and just vote on what position they should be in by the votes. That way every hit song from that era will at least make the countdown if not a top spot.
Spike-X

I think an even better idea would be to realise that there is a bunch of great music outside of the top 40, and to recognise the difference between 'great' and 'popular'.

I think an even better idea would be to realise that there is a bunch of great music outside of the top 40, and to recognise the difference between 'great' and 'popular'.The list was definitly popularity driven. Which is why i said just list the top 40. VH1 should have said The 100 most popular songs of the 90's (Is likely what they meant in the first place).

I agree, but this is the US we're talking about. Good music taste doesn't usually happen on this side of the shore. :D (a lot of Britpop gems were overlooked, but that's to be expected).
Anyway, they were spot-on with #1 overall, though.

A lot of those are niche hits. I wouldn't necessarily classify any of them as being the "greatest songs of the 90s".
It seems that VH-1 took the most representative hit for one artist and judged them on that one song - that's why there weren't many (if any) multiple entries for one single artist or band.

VH1 fans sucks, they are too young or have bad memory.
How can Vanilla Ice "Ice Ice Baby" be ranked so high and not have a song by Michael Jackson.
Sure its trendy to diss him now and call him Wacko but the guy has one album that have sold 104 million copies......

A lot of those are niche hits. I wouldn't necessarily classify any of them as being the "greatest songs of the 90s".
It seems that VH-1 took the most representative hit for one artist and judged them on that one song - that's why there weren't many (if any) multiple entries for one single artist or band.Which is why i said they should have numbered all of the top 40 hits...

VH1 fans sucks, they are too young or have bad memory.
How can Vanilla Ice "Ice Ice Baby" be ranked so high and not have a song by Michael Jackson.
Sure its trendy to diss him now and call him Wacko but the guy has one album that have sold 104 million copies......Janet was noticeably absent as well. Which makes me think that VH1 already had a predetermined list, Making votes pointless..

Why does my generation have to have so many things that suck? Like from music to movies to almost everything.
Yes I was born in the 90's

Because Jackson's best work was in the 80s?

Every generation has things that suck. Disregard the lowest-common-denominator swill and focus on the good stuff.

I would have to agree with most of the other picks for additions to this list, as well as entries from:
Bjork
Headless Chickens
Def FX
Massive Attack
Portishead
Strawpeople
Angelique Kidjo
Me'shell N'degeOcello
Tori Amos
lots of others but I'm at work, gotta be quick :)

I really liked this show! I watched it with my family a couple of weeks ago. There were many good songs and memories on the 100 countdown!

Come on y'all, you know you roller-skated to "You Can't Touch This". Ah, the incredible tunes from the 80s and 90s...

I actually think the 90's are underrated....... People just remember the 80's because of nostalgia. But 90's music was genuinely good.

i Didn't watch the whole show so did new radicals or marylin manson make the cut?
i can't believe someone would put on Rico Suave although it sounds more like a novelty/parody song now,
at the time i thought it was the second coming of the apocalypse.
i hate Whitney Houstons "song" but it was popular:mad:
