I just signed the papers this morning, making it official. I'll be an instructor at a nearby county community college. They have several programs there, technical programs, continuing education, high school diploma, and college transfer.

I'll have four day classes and one evening class, with average class size being 12-15 students.

My official start date is January 2, and classes begin on the 14th.

I can't help asking, though---I know you love your little ones... are you going to be okay with missing them?

Yeah, I'll miss Little Dent quite a bit. I got a year with her in full time mommy mode. I'll still get that for summer and winter breaks, though. It was a tough decision, but what it came down to was that I can be a mommy and I can be a teacher, especially with my mom here to help out and onsite daycare at the college, free to faculty members.

My brother and sister will have basically the same schedule as I do, so I won't be missing out on their stuff as much.

Ohhhh. For some reason, I'd thought that you were out for a while with Lil' Dent, and then went back to teaching before now. Argh, my bad.

And yes, of course you can be both Mommy and Teacher. :) My mom did. Lots of Teachers who are Moms do it. I'm glad your family is close by and that your Mom can help---and that you get to see your sibs. Having onsite daycare rocks---it makes it much easier to check up on your little one. Congrats again! :)

Nope. I've been out of work since the middle of 2006, about 18 months now. It'll be nice being back teaching again.

And how is Lil' Dent doing? Are you guys looking forward to Christmas with her? I know she's a little young to really "get it" yet---but know that so much more fun is in store, as she gets older and *does* get it. Finn's six, and right now his "Christmas Excitement/Christmas Energy" is at an all-time high---you should've seen him yesterday, when we were pulling decorations out of the attic and opening the bins! He was like a little Hollywood director, giving direction to me and Troy on what to open, what we could use an item for, where we should put it, etc. We got so tickled, especially when Troy looked at Finn and said, "So---are you a Director?" and without missing a beat Finn said quite firmly, "Yes." (Even though he has no idea what a Director is.) :D

Of course, the down side to that excitement is keeping him from opening the presents that are already out... and fielding the 1001 repeats of questions like "Can I open my presents now? When can we open presents? Is it Christmas yet? Why can't we make it Christmas NOW???" etc.... no matter how many times you give the same answers. And yes, he *knows* how many days it is till Christmas---but he keeps asking anyway. :D

In medical terminology, it's identified as "Bouncing Off The Walls." ;)

She is doing wonderfully. She had a minor respiratory infection last month, which wasn't life threatening, but was still nerve wracking for both me and Emily. Mom took it in stride. She's walking, knows about a dozen words each in English and Japanese, and is managing a sippy cup with some difficulty.

We have to keep an eye on the presents or she'll take off with them or sit under the tree and start tearing at the wrapping or playing with any low hanging ornaments.

I think it'll be two more years before she can really understand. For Christmas of 2009, shell be three and a half.

Emily and I used to go to Disneyland every Christmas. Circumstances prevent anything like that this year, and did last, but we're thinking once Little Dent hits four or five she'll be up for a Christmas at Disneyworld.

I do get to enjoy watching Molly and Will, though. Molly wears her heart on her sleeve, so her excitement is palpable, but Will has reached the age where he thinks he has to not show that he's excited so he can appear to be "cool".

Mom and I are playing a little game with them. Every night when they're in bed, a new present goes under the tree for someone, so they have to search through to see if they got a new one added during the night.

I'm having fun with it. I think the little one can sense that something important is going on, and she's reacting to that even without knowing what it is.

Yay Gilda!

For some reason, I'm thinking that you taught second- or fourth-graders prior to this?

From that, to college students must be one heckuva jump.

Having a job that I enjoy doing, and look forward to, is something that I strive for when I am done being home with my babies. You give me hope!

Second graders most recently, and first or second grade most of my career.

Yeah, it'll be a big jump from 7-9 year olds to students a decade older.

Congratulations Gilda.

My plan originally when the baby came was to stay at home with her until she started pre-school, but this just came along from a job application I'd sent out more than a year ago, and was too good to pass up.

Fortunately, they have onsite daycare at the college, so I can visit Little Dent and have lunch with her every day, which will give her some continuity when I start working.

The other alternative right now is that my mom might change her schedule to night classes so that she can stay home with the baby during the day and be there for her two youngest for a few hours when they get home from school.

I'd miss her, but I do trust my mom. She has lousy taste in men, but she's good with kids.
