Just something I was always curious about. Both games are mechanically similar, with the focus being fast-paced deathmatch and high-powered weapons with a dark, futuristic setting.

I just want to know what the preferred game is on these boards. I'm more of a Quake person because it's more accessible in my country; nobody seems to play Unreal any more over here in Singapore, and most LAN places only have either Quake III Arena or Quake 4 installed rather than any Unreal games.

Unreal seems just the slightest bit slower to me, but Unreal Tournament 2004 and Quake 4 are vying for the top spot in my favorites.

Unreal Tournament 2K4 is one of the most fun online games ever. Gameplay wise, I feel like it just blows Quake III (never played 4) away in terms of options, maps, and just plain fun. Plus, only in UT2K4 could my friends and I invent the game of Shield Gun Jousting.

I didn't like Quake much. I didn't play the latest ones so I wouldn't know if it has gotten better. Always liked Unreal more. I'll get them and see how they fair.

Dont play Quake 4.
It was so horrible formulaic... I played it for 20 or so level, then quickly cheated to the end, uninstalled and threw the cds away.

Quake 2 was more fun and a lot more interesting than Quake 4, and it was done by one of my favorite studios :/

Quake typically has had the better modding community, though the Unreal games are better "out of the box." With the new mod support on Unreal Tournament 3, however...

Also, I've always found the weapons, pacing, and level design of Unreal to be far superior. There is no Quake map that comes anywhere close to Unreal's "Facing Worlds,"(well, maybe Quake 2's "Stronghold." maybe).

In the multiplayer aspect, Unreal wins consistently.

Ouch. Should start playing more Unreal, then. If only I could find a copy of UT2K4 lying around somewhere...

And if you didn't like Quake III Arena's multiplayer, you won't like Quake 4's. There are no major differences at all between the two; in fact, Quake 3's deathmatch is considered far superior to its successor. The only reason why I like 4 more is because the Machinegun is a hitscan weapon; I hate having to lead my shots with a starting weapon.

There are lots of new things in UT 3
