Actually that character design wasn't bad at all. It was very clean. The problem truly was the use of paper. If you want to go really cheap then I would suggest just using printer paper. Though I would highly advise getting a sketchbook if you really enjoy what you do. Also you might want to invest in photoshop if you haven't already. If you're strapped for cash there are plenty of places you can use it for free; library, college campuses, computer cafes. Just to name a few. There are some cheap scanners out there as well. Trust me I know what it's like being under funded and not enough tools. Don't give up

Those aren't so bad. I've certainly seen a lot worse.
In particular you seem to have a pretty good sense of proportion, based on what you've shown us so far.

go get some nice sketchbooks.
then get a friend or library with a scanner.
you're good! know your weaknesses and faults and all that, but don't be too down on yourself or you might just decide "this sucks" and quit. And then nobody wins.

This is some good art Knight Lancer. I wouldn't be discouraged because of not having all those art utensils. I just recently got a scanner, not the best but it does it's job, and before I got my copy of Paintshop I would use the free trial to color my Ms paint line work. I don't own a tablet or even an optical mouse. Before all of that I stopped drawing with pencils all together and just used MsPaint for all my art. So you just have to make do with what you got to make your art work.
I still draw on photo copy paper.

These are very good, Knight Lancer. Keep at it. And take the advice of some of the previous posters and get yourself a sketchbook or a pack of printer paper -- the lined paper is _very_ distracting.
I really like the anatomy on your Superman. Keep researching (look for bodybuilders on the web) and you'll continue to improve.

Get a heavy weight printer paper... like, 400 sheets for $10 at most. I use it all the time. I use better stuff as well, but I don't like drawing in books, so I just use printer paper instead of a sketchbook.
I find that it takes ink and acrylic paint pretty well. Some warping, but bristol warps too.

Kudos to your work! Your ability to proportion are right-on and your pencils are sharp and crisp. Your attention to costume detail is awesome and shows patience. I would love to see you do a Captain America. Most artist hates doing the chainmail part of his tunic but I bet you can pull it off.
Other than that everyone is right on the money in regards to the type of paper you need and your scanner issues being resolved by a large local library.

Great artwork, Knight Lancer. I really like the way you pose your characters.
Wonderful character designs, too!
