Which Marvel characters seriously need to take on proteges in case anything happens to them? My first pick would be Reed, have him take on Shadowcat or Spider-Man, SHRA be damned, the world's in a worst place if they lose Reed's intelligence. Also have Dr.Strange take on a new protege, if something happened to him at the moment the new sorcerer supreme could very well be Doom.

In practical terms, since no one ages and really no one dies, having legacy characters never really has meaning.

But in story terms, I would think Dr. Strange would pretty much always have an apprentice in training in the wings.

Tony is another character I can see wanting a protege. I suspect to a degree he wanted that in Peter... but it was a poor choice since Peter and Tony are so fundamentally different as far as character and ethics go.

I would think either Peter or Reed would want to try and take Cho under their wing. Not that he would necessarily be interested.

The Shroud should take Dusk under his wing and mold her into someone suitable to inherit his role in the criminal underworld. she could probably benefit from some martial arts training, as well.

and

i truly believe that Henry Peter Gyrich would be the perfect mentor for Eric O'Grady. Henry could show Eric the ins-and-outs of politics and show him how to abuse power.

Perhaps you're thinking of Kristoff who was brainwashed into thinking he actually was Dr. Doom?

Thats it, he was Doom's protege in House of M, but I guess not in the 616.

X-23 is Wolverine's protege.
Jean was Xavier's protege.
Any more?

This could go both ways. O'Grady could instruct Gyrich how to use super-powers, if he ever gets them, how to abuse them in order to be a pervert. Or even inter-office romances.

Few people can say they had sex with their best friend's girlfriend on said friend's grave.

POlaris:

Scott is Xavier's protege, not Jean.
