View Full Version : RITA's XLVIII: Some Fun Now
Brian Cronin
12-14-2007, 11:48 PM
Here's RITA's.
It's a basic off-topic discussion thread. It is named in honor of one of our favorite posters, Awesome Rita!
Think about it as her bar.
Same rules as the regular board apply, except, well, the off-topic part.
In addition, if you really must know stuff like "what is the biggest shit you've taken?" or "why is it hard for ladies to have an orgasim?," then you can ask that stuff here.
Enjoy!
-Brian

Just got back from my work Christmas party a bit ago. Those are always fun.
I never get tired of watching white people try to dance to hip hop at office Christmas parties. :D heh.
It wasn't too bad I guess. I enjoy the people watching and free food.
Jack Zodiac

You say "free food" or "free booze" or any variation thereof, and I'm there. But even besides that, office Christmas parties are hilarious.
Nikita
12-15-2007, 12:23 AM
To a certain extent yes. But I'm bitter and jaded from being with the same company for 11 years, so the office parties only hold so much entertainment these days. It was pretty funny to see one of our supervisors trying to dance with his wife. Man, I didn't think anyone could be that bad....but he proved me wrong.
Jack Zodiac
12-15-2007, 12:46 AM
He never learned the man secret of letting the woman do all the dancing and just looking good by proxy?
Nikita

Apparently not. lol. Poor guy. At least he was trying. I give him kudos for effort.
Jack Zodiac
12-15-2007, 12:54 AM
Yeah, he gets credit for trying at least. That's a sight better than most guys would go. I'm all for holding both drinks while the woman does her thing around me.

Hello new Rita's
Mike Smash!
12-15-2007, 05:27 AM
Hey, folks!
Well, that's not a fun way to wake up.
All of a sudden the light is on and Collin is handing me the phone saying there's a derelict out on the porch going through our stuff. He tried the door into the house. Collin goes out to confront the guy who's wandering around. 911 is called, we don't know if they got the guy but damn, that's scary.

Could have been worse. No one might have noticed him before something bad happened. Glad you nipped it in the potential bud.
Certainly could have been but it is so frustrating. There's been an increase in transients around here and fewer deputies, so every week in the paper the crime beat is getting larger with more home robberies.

Man, there isn't anything good to see this weekend at the cinema. The tomatometer for this week's new releases is rotten after rotten after rotten.
I'm at least relieved that Alvin and the Chipmunks got low-ass scores, although the positive reviews bug me.
"Could've been a lot worse; it's a singing chipmunk movie, for Pete's sake."
"Yes, the movie is juvenile and occasionally stupid. What do you expect in a story about singing chipmunks?"
How the heck are those positive reviews?

All I can say is that the movie had better not violate any of the continuity from the cartoon. There should at least be a cameo by the Chipettes to appease the hardcore Munkophiles.

Random bum rifling through your shit? That's a rare one, to be sure. I'm glad that's all he did, though. He sounds more like a bum of the disoriented and confused variety than the aggressively violent kind. I hope the cops find him and you guys don't have to worry about it anymore.

I feel exactly the same way. Except, well, instead of "fun" I'd use relentlessly boring. And Emily has two of them. The one with the lab people isn't nearly as bad as with the business people, all of whom seem to be either obnoxious alphas, or wannabe obnoxious alphas.
At least this year I can sit off to one side and sip some wine instead of sitting off to one side and sipping some Pepsi, which should improve things as long as I limit my intake to no more than a couple of glasses.

Bullshit medical problems have bullshit medicines with bullshit side-effects.
"You lost $3000 at the casino? Again?!"
"I'm sorry. It must be my RLS medicine. I can't stop gambling since I started taking it."
".....But you gambled before you started taking that stuff."
"Er..., but the doctor said it might have some unknown side-effects. This has to be one of them! I was only gambling every once in a while before. I can't stop now. Unless you want me to stop taking medicine for my medical condition. You don't want that, do you?"
That's the conversation that happened between the rich, spoiled, kept housewife right before she went to the doctor to tell him about the side-effect.

Yeah, but the real hardcores would be pissed off because it violates the original The Alvin Show cartoon. It was always going to suck, but that's because Alvin and the Chipmunks always sucked. But hey, Ross Bagdasarian is a producer and the star of the film, so at least it's all original in its sucking.

If you'd like, I can email you my fanfic that explains the apparent continuity problems between the two shows. Fair warning- there's some Dave/ Theodore slash in there.

Aiya. So, got a sample for Twenty One. Its "A tribute to New York's 21 Club on West 52nd, formerly the speakeasy Jack & Charlie's Puncheon Club. This is the scent of the perfect martini."
I should not be surprised to find it smelling of a vaugely metallic olive an hour later. Not likin this. Why do I keep trying scents based on alcohol when I don't really drink?

You feel guilty about not drinking so you are subconsciously trying to compensate for the lack of alcohol in your body?

Yeah. They tend to toss in one or two samples for each bottle ordered.. which totally works to their advantage, as I've found some oils that I'd never have ordered off the descriptions but loved on testing.

Genuine New York Moment:
So, I'm walking down 6th Avenue tonight (does anyone other than the tourism board call it "Avenue of the Americas?"), absorbed in my own nonsensical ruminations as usual, when I hear the unmistakable sound of running water.
Or, more accurately, running urine, as some guy is taking a whiz into one of those big potted plants they have on the curbside.
What the hell? It's December, night has fallen, it's about thirty degrees out, what the fuck are you doing whipping your junk out on a crowded street? It's fucking Midtown; find a big box store and hit the public bathroom if you have to go that bad! If you get into one of the stalls, you can even mix your crystal meth, or whatever the hell it is homeless people do in there when I have to take a Brobdingnagian dump!

The volunteer fire department had to install iron gates blocking off the entrance into the community hall because low-lifes were urinating in the corners. This is on main street, small town.

You kids want to hear something funny?
Yesterday I was in some dept. store doing some christmas shopping and I loiter through the Books section, and I look through the SciFi/Fantasy section to see if anything catches my eye... and sure enough something does.
Nestled right in-between the fictional works of Arthur C. Clarke and David Eddings is Richard Dawkin's "The God Delusion".
And it wasn't some carelessly-misplaced book either! There were like, 3 or 4 copies stacked right behind it!
And I laughed and laughed and laughed...
(... and when I left the store I got scooped up by an anonymous white van where I was whisked away to a "Secular-sensitivity training camp" for re-conditioning, so I'm all better now.)

At least this year I can sit off to one side and sip some wine instead of sitting off to one side and sipping some Pepsi, which should improve things as long as I limit my intake to no more than a couple of glasses.
That's pretty much what I did. Just sat and laughed at the people attempting to dance.

It's the family business, so we have to be there. My sister buys a lot of items to be raffled between the teachers (from kitchen utensils to a TV), we are the ones pulling out the numbers. And since the raffle is the main event, it's usually held after every teacher is there, so we have to get there early and leave late.
It's fun, but sometimes I just like to stay at home and watch a movie with my wife.

Well, the first few years we were together, Emily and I spent Christmas at Disneyland. Things have changed drastically the last two years.
Growing up, we seldom had Christmas in the same home or with the same people more than two or three years in a row.
But for those who've had a relatively stable home and for whom Christmas is relatively the same, I can see what you're saying.
I'm not saying I don't enjoy certain parts of the holiday, but there is an enormous amount of stress that comes with those things, all the worry about getting things right so that everyone enjoys themselves.

He almost lost me with the big brown bar across the top. Blech. But otherwise, I like the color scheme and ... ooh! is that a bottom bar? Is it widgitized? It looks like it's widgitized. [downloads and checks] Rats, it's not widgitized. That sucks for anybody who wants to use it.
I really hate that brown turd on the top (with tabs that don't indicate clickage, grumblegrumble) (and it's tied to the blue bar. Switching it will require some finesse.)
So it's kind of generic looking and not without its problems, but this one gets my vote. The others kind of suck.

7 days without a cigarette, now. Aside from coughing up what looks like wood glue, going through a bag of pretzels in 10 minutes, openly weeping over the lost beer-and-smoke combo, and wanting to kill people for being too "nice," everything's just fine.
Whoa, congrats, I am a few days away from that myself.

Nicotine replacement does not eliminate the physical addiction to nicotine.

Go man, go! If you're up to seven days without, you're pretty much out of the woods, at least where the physical addiction is concerned.
Not entirely true. I've been using the Nicorette crutch. So the nicotine addiction is still present, although diminished by a magnitude.

I think my biggest problem was actually the habitual behavior. Cigarettes were just an omnipresent "addendum."

Well, good luck however you're trying it.
The behavior was the big problem for me, as well. One thing that I found helped, since I only ever smoked outside, was to get up from time to time and just walk around outside. It fulfilled some psychological need or ritual, but without having to actually light up a cigarette.

Y'know what, though? Is this your first time trying to quit? Because I've seen people do it off and on, smoke for years, quit for a month, smoke for months, quit for years, but in the end they usually kick it. So good luck, man. I'm sure you'll be able to do it, with or without a patch or gum.

Nope. This is my third time quitting. I quit after college for about 3 or 4 years, I quit when I got married and had a kid (a mutual pact, if you will) for 4 years.

I thought it was a way to ease off it . . . less Nicotine every day or something.

I'm not really seeing the difference from the "smoking" Dread.
Good luck, though, man. My uncle, who smoked from age 13 through age 62 quit just recently. Cold turkey, no patch, nothing. He hasn't touched a coffin nail in over 6 months. Pretty amazing.

Its the brainwashing, the mental aspect to cigarette habits.
Its so hypocritical, we smoke when we are stressed, right?
Yet, we also smoke after a good meal, or to relax, right?

You don't smoke enough of them. And if you don't inhale (most people don't inhale cigars) the absorption is through the mouth, so less nicotine intake equals less addictive material.
And yes, they *DO* add extra nicotine to a lot of cigarette brands, and in fact most cigarette tobacco is from carefully cross-bred strains with higher nicotine content. No big deal, really.

Depending on who you ask, they are addictive. Youa re still treating that little nicotine monster in your system, just teh withdrawl pangs are so minor you never feel them.
If I am physically addicted to nicotine, how come I can go 8 hours a night without smoking, but cannot go 8 hours without smoking during the day.

Yes. A doctor once explained to me (after taking a drag on a Winston, I might add) that it's not that it either calms or relaxes in and of itself, it's that the body gets to a "familiar feeling" after a smoke and it's that feeling that relaxes us due to it's familiarity.

I never figured that out either. I know a guy at work that *HAS* to wake up in the middle of the night for a smoke. Me? I have my last cigarette before I go to bed, and don't light up again until I'm on my way home from work.

That makes sense. I rarely inhale, so the intake is definitely less.
But I read somewhere that the amount of tobacco in a cigar = a whole pack of cigarettes.

Yeah, you should see that movie. Be warned, though, that it's more of a war movie than a Christmas movie. And you'll need the subtitles turned on unless you speak English, German, and French fluently. Big props on them filming people speaking in the correct languages.

It is a very good movie. And subtitles bother much less then dubbing; or having an actor try to speak with an accent, badly.

You might be craving the sugar burst, but it's more likely the sensation of carbonated bubbles bursting on your tongue. I find that drinking seltzer or club soda helps with that -and by 'that' I mean soda craving.
