Aww...I had one of my(photography)professors in college tell me that painting and poetry were dead arts. I responded by throwing a loaded paintbrush in his face and asking him how he would tell the story of why he had paint all over his face.
Did he file assault charges right then, or did he wait until you left the room?

Oh yeah, well my girlfriend doesn't exist,
I thought you had a girlfriend. In Canada.
John Tesh punched me in the chest tonight.
You shouldn't have peed in his sax.
Well yeah, you should have.
I figured eventually the suspense would get to someone. I worked a charity food drive thing tonight. Tesh was there bagging up food. I think his daughter was there or something for school. Maria Shriver was there for a while too. Anyways, I'm walking behind him when he starts taking off his jacket and he plants a fist accidentally in the middle of my chest. Not enough to hurt or anything, but enough to give me a semi-interesting story.
Accident. Riiight. I bet he went home and bragged all night.
"Yeah, I totally hit this guy for looking at me funny."

Yee.
In my family at Christmas, we start drinking as soon as we get off the plane and stop when we leave. With breakfast (mimosas). While cooking. While playing cards. Etc.
And no fights. It's consistently jolly. Hard on the liver. But jolly.
One of these days there will be children involved again and we'll have to shift.

So, what traditions do you guys have for the holidays?
For example, I ALWAYS hold back on one gift I know I'm going to buy, and then go out on the 23rd to the mall or some other massively crowded place and wander around till I get it. Every year. I don't know why, but seeing all those other people shopping is kind of therapeutic.

Well until this year I always went to this one seedy bar on Christmas Eve. Everyone did, it was always hilarious and a scene.

Have yet to make any new traditions as of late. My family used to go to Mugga's(my grandmother's-I came up with the name for her when I was real little) every year, but she passed away about 4 years back. And since that time, I've become estranged from my folks(and they have moved away). For 3 years, Sarah and I would go to her grandmother's with all her side of the family, but since her grandfather passed away shortly after Christmas last year, that is no longer occurring as normal.
About the only tradition we've really settled on is going to "Christmas in the Park" every year.

This year, all our traditions are probably out the window. My folks are in a new state and all the ornaments/decorations are in long-term storage. My brother and I are staying at a hotel. My grandmother isn't coming. It'll be weird.
The fact I'm 36 years old and have never missed a Christmas at home is a tradition, I guess. It's certainly unusual at this point. And my mother does acknowledge she's lucky there. My brother has made it every year except the ones where he was in the military and didn't get it off.
We do tacos on Christmas Eve. That's a tradition that came with my stepfather. He's from the Salinas area. It's a special kind of Southern California taco.
We'll watch It's A Wonderful Life if we happen to come across it, but no other Christmas movies.
We play a lot of rummy.

We always do the gift exchanges on Christmas Eve. That was because all my sisters and brother have kids of their own for Christmas morning stuff. I always get two of my step-siblings a game for Christmas, and after we open all the gifts on Christmas Eve, we play them until everyone decides to go home. Starting last year, or the year before, my brother and his family have begged off the traditional gathering and have instead started doing the same thing with their kids. They live in Alpeena in northern Michigan so it's too much to be considered a quick trip. So now we exchange presents with them on Thanksgiving.

When I was little, I was always jealous of the kids who got to open one present on Christmas Eve.
When we got older, and lived in a different town, we'd spend Christmas Eve with our paternal grandparents and an aunt/uncle (and sometimes our father), and open presents with them on that night. And eat awesome traditional Danish food -- I miss that part.
Now we're back to Christmas morning only.

Over the years, Trivial Pursuit is the one that got played the most, and pulled out year after year. Not so much anymore. Right now, I think Imagine-If is the one that gets the most repeat playings. Cranium has been getting good replay. Apples to Apples is a good one for a quick get together. The favorite from last year was You've Been Sentenced, but I don't expect that to repeat very well.
Lord, I can't remember all the games I've bought. Must be over a 100 by now...

"Catch & Release" has brought me to the conclusion that Kevin Smith's presence no longer guarantees I'll find something to like about a movie.
Plus I just can't buy Timothy Olyphant as a leading man. He's got the crazy eyes. He can't be the "nice guy". He does crazy guy well, though.
Yep. Plus, they didn't really give him anything to do to demonstrate why Garner would fall for him. All he does is stand around looking like a catalog model.
Moonlight Mile is a much better movie based on the same basic premise, a fiancee dying shortly before the wedding, with a big secret the fiancee was keeping being revealed in the aftermath.
Quick question for those who have seen No Country for Old Men.
Why does Llewelyn go back to scene of the drug bust with the water? The entire rest of the main plot rests on that one decision, which gets him caught by the drug dealers, and it's the only apparently stupid thing he does the whole movie. I'm sure he had a good reason for it but I can't quite figure it out.

Christmas traditions:
Emily and I used to go to Disneyland every Christmas. Christmas break is their busiest part of the year, and Christmas Day their busiest day of the year, which meant huge crowds. This was somewhat difficult for me as the day went on, so we'd usually leave the park a little after lunch, go to a movie, and come back for dinner at the Blue Bayou cafe, always requesting a table on the water.
This year we're going to do things the way mom and the kids are used to it. We'll open presents "Christmas Eve". In Filipino tradition, or at least the way my mom learned it, "Christmas Eve" begins at midnight Christmas Day and lasts until sunrise. You open presents, have a Christmas Eve meal which includes 12 round fruits, if you can find that many, and then you play games and sing Christmas songs and all that Christmassy stuff.

My best guess:
It has to do with his time in the military and the whole "leave no man behind" creed. You could tell it was causing him guilt as well.

Quite simply: His conscience was bothering him. He couldn't sleep from thinking about it. Is it realistic? Maybe not. I know if it had been me, I wouldn't have done it. But it might have been MORE than enough for some people.
See, the thing is, they didn't NEED to do it because the rest of the plot DOESN'T necessarily rest on the point:
The money had a homing device in it, remember? So they could have gone a completely different direction and still advanced the plot to its final sequence.
All in all, I hate "situation dramas" where the protagonists make stupid unrealistic decisions. I walked out of the very similar A Simple Plan because the decisions were too unbelievable, and Very Bad Things made me want to DO very bad things to the people who wrote that shit. But for some reason, Llewelyn's moment of compassion didn't upset me. It just sort of fit for me, for some reason.

I remember the year we got Super Mario Bros. 3. Christmas was on Sunday that year and we opened presents early in the morning. Then they made us put it away without playing it so we could go to church.

While I was on oxycontin, I worked at Sprint. I had to stand a good portion of the day, and my foot would be in real bad shape at the end of my shift. Since the stuff made me loopy, I wouldn't take it until just before I left for the day. My doctor had been nervous about putting me on this medication because it was so strong, and warned me never, ever to take a half pill. Well, one day at the end of work, I found the pill I had brought with me was crushed. Not halved, but in many pieces. Now, I didn't know exactly WHY I wasn't supposed to take a half pill, so I figured that it wouldn't be a problem, as I was consuming the whole thing. So I swallow all the pieces, and drive to my friend Greg's house just fine. However, as I start to walk up his driveway, I begin to feel lightheaded. When Greg opened the door, I fell unconscious in the doorway.
It is then I learned that the pill was designed for a time-release, and taking a halved pill would cause that full pill's contents to affect you immediately. Taking a crushed whole pill was double stupid.
This is why when I am told not to do something, I want to know why. Particularly medical and drug type things.

Between how he reacted to the guy asking for "agua", and then him laying in bed, unable to sleep, it all came across as very realistic and well played.
Great movie, but I couldn't finish it. The tension was giving me an anxiety attack...
Quite simply: His conscience was bothering him. He couldn't sleep from thinking about it. Is it realistic? Maybe not. I know if it had been me, I wouldn't have done it. But it might have been MORE than enough for some people.
Thanks, that makes sense. I had assumed that the one survivor had died by then, so I hadn't made the connection.
See, the thing is, they didn't NEED to do it because the rest of the plot DOESN'T necessarily rest on the point:
The money had a homing device in it, remember? So they could have gone a completely different direction and still advanced the plot to its final sequence.
Not necessarily, but I get the point. It does triple duty by setting up the main plot thread, helping establish a key thematic element, and tell us something about the character.
It fits for me now, too. With A Simple Plan, part of the point is that the protagonist's partners are idiots. The book plays it a bit differently, is a bit darker in how it portrays the events, and I think the main thesis of the story is slightly different. In the book, you're basically following a mass murderer on his killing spree, but because he's initially portrayed as ordinary and sympathetic, and you're following events from his point of view, and each individual decision he makes makes a strange kind of sense to him, you don't realize you're identifying with the villain of the piece. He's the classic unreliable narrator, but because he seems so reasonable most of the time, the reader tends to accept the point of view he presents. I think the movie pulled back away from that a bit, trying to make it about a man trapped by circumstance who makes a few bad decisions.

According to my husband's Doc, they often don't mention that about certain meds because of the idiots who would deliberately misuse the stuff.
Unfortunately we have a friend who does so, if it might give him a buzz he'll try it. So he switches doctors right and left trying to convince them he is in constant pain and needs the meds.

I want to know what I'm doing. :p
Also, I think I have finally found the right order and spacing for food, meds, and alcohol when I want to drink something with more alcohol than a single serving of hard cider.
Fucked that one up Labor Day weekend. Had a drink that I didn't precisely inhale, twenty minutes later I'm going, "wtf, I think I'm kinda tipsy." Mentioned this to a friend, and the general consensus was: yes. I go find the gentleman working the bar (whom I trust) and ask him precisely how much of what did he put in my drink? He was rather confused as he made it lighter than he normally would, knowing I seldom drink. He agreed with the assesment though, and we're trying to figure out how the fuck one drink... and then I realize. I'd forgotten to bring my meds to dinner. Meandering afterwards meant it had been over two hours since dinner by time I got back to my hotel room and took the meds, thus on a relatively empty stomach, and was at the party half an hour later.
However, if I order it alcohol, with or followed by food, and a bit LATER take the muscle relaxant, its all good.

Hi DarkBlade, just out of curiosity, I was wondering what your doctor said about alcohol use. One of my friends with RA was told to stop drinking a year ago for his drugs were messing up his liver. I was wondering if you were seeing the same effects with some of your drugs. I suspect ibuprofern (ab)use is part of it. He inhales it for he doesn't want to take oxy but maybe it is the enebrel too? Just curious your thoughts. He is 26 btw.

A lot of those meds can be harsh on the liver, as well as the stomach. I ought to mention that I do not drink -frequently- and usually not to the point of actually getting drunk. (Hence part of my WTF at the party.) My doctors have advised me to drink with caution, however, I only average 1-2 servings of alcohol a month and my liver enzyme tests have always come back within safe levels. If they've told your friend his liver is being torn up, its likely because labwork indicates it is and that's pretty damn serious.
I know acetaminophen (tylenol) is a much higher liver risk than ibuprofen, which is why it is NOT advised to take Tylenol for or to ward off hangovers. Large amounts of ibuprofen though, that can cause acute cell damage in the liver. He should talk to his doctor about what his real daily dosages are. I've found that instead of just trying to pop a ton of OTCs, it helps if I take a slightly stronger medicine when the pain STARTS to kick high. If I wait til it's full up there and raring, then I have to take a lot more of the stronger meds. I can sympathize with the not wanting to take the oxy.. when classmates found out or heard that I was on narcotics semiregularly they would often try to hit me up for some or say, wow, you get to be buzzed all the time! I guess they affect you differently if you aren't actually in pain. I always get -some- pain relief with them (but not nearly all), and then I have a hard time thinking and doing things and tend to be easier to panic. I finally went off on someone in my spanish class about ten minutes before the professor got there. If I'd known a five minute half tear filled tirade would have shut them up, I'd have done it two semesters previous.

Ouch, I understand a whole lot of this stuff but man these ones are difficult:
Cabinet price Nominal price for liquidating deep-out-of-the-money options contracts. Defined as the lowest possible tradable price for this option, and is determined within the Clearing System. Trades on options done at a price equal to zero are considered cabinet trades.
Cabinet Trade (cab) A trade that allows options traders to execute deep out of the money options by trading the option at a price less than the minimum tick (based on the minimal allowable tick convention).

I think Moonlight Mile was based on a true story.

This year we're going to do things the way mom and the kids are used to it. We'll open presents "Christmas Eve". In Filipino tradition, or at least the way my mom learned it, "Christmas Eve" begins at midnight Christmas Day and lasts until sunrise. You open presents, have a Christmas Eve meal which includes 12 round fruits, if you can find that many, and then you play games and sing Christmas songs and all that Christmassy stuff.Since I was a little kid, we open one present around suppertime on Christmas Eve, and the rest the next morning. I'm pretty sure that started to shut me up for a few hours.

It SERIOUSLY added to the taste. Since movie theaters bought it in bulk, the price stayed manageable. And with what they charge... frankly, the most important part to THEM was that people loved the taste.
THEN we found out it was super-saturated in fats, or something like that, and health groups started raising hell, and health conscious people started bitching and we wind up with who know what kind of oil.

I grew up in southern India; we deep fry almost everything in coconut oil down there but we've never used it on popcorn. Maybe someone has and they've been keeping secrets from me, damn it. I used eat to gobs of coconut oil out of the jar as a kid, sometimes used it as a substitute for butter. So tasty.

When it distracts from the narrative thrust... or whatever.
I think the complaint is not so much that it's "too witty", but that it's too "self-consciously witty". It rings false and pulls you out of the "moment".

It's bad when it's unrealistic. An essay can be super witty, but it's not how people actually speak. So that can be distracting as day-to-day dialogue.
I haven't seen the movie or even a trailer, so they could mean something else. But that is one possibility.

So, what traditions do you guys have for the holidays?
We open gifts for the immediate family on Christmas Eve and then open up gifts with everyone else the next day. I say we, but I mean Kristina's immediate family because I've spent it with them for the last few years and probably will continue doing so for as long as I can imagine.
My new favorite is Sets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set_(game)).
I keep hearing about Apples to Apples but haven't tried it.
I played that at the holiday party we threw last week. It's fun, but you really have to know the people you're playing with to get in the groove of it.
I know we aren't supposed to do this, but the TV/Film board is breaking my brain.
You're probably talking about the Writer's Guild strike thread, right? To be fair, it's not the whole board, but only one thread. Actually, it seems to be one guy agreeing with the studio heads and getting quite a beat down for it. Not that I blame others for it.
And in regards to Christmas music, we mostly have Jimmy Buffett's album on heavy rotation.
Right now, I'm listening to WOXY.com's holiday mixer (http://woxy.lala.com/holiday.php). These are the last few songs they played.
Beck - Little Drum Machine Boy
The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping
Fiona Apple - Frosty The Snowman
The Beach Boys - Little Saint Nick
U2 - Christmas
Dressy Bessy - All The Right Reasons
Listening to The Pogues' Fairytale Of New York now. They also play Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra songs every once in a while.
Holy shit. (http://www.wnbc.com/news/10357422/detail.html?rss=ny&psp=news) A lawyer that once represented my uncle has been convicted of murdering his wife.
That's disconcerting.
Woo hoo! Somehow, despite being a lazy fuck, I managed to walk away with a 4.0 for the term. First good news I've had in weeks.
Congratulations, you lazy fuck.

When the "wit" or smart retorts seem too forced. It's the same reason many don't like Kevin Smith's movies. The dialogue in those movies fit the context of the films' styles, but when you have characters constantly spouting off clever witticisms, it can detract from the story or make the situation a bit more unbelievable when compared to the mood the movie is trying to set.
That said, I'm looking forward to seeing Juno.
Ok, I'd freak out if I walked up on this.

Thank you.
Actually, having a well-reasoned and calm conversation is a good thing. If you can keep from strangling someone through the monitor, go for it.
I'd love it if more people could post their favorite movies of 2007 (and why, if possible), because many of the lists there so far are....not great.
What were your favorites, Justin?

No, I actually like that bit quite a bit better now that Dox and KO explained it. I had a brain freeze on that one, my fault, not a problem with the movie.
The moment wasn't a plot or character thing, but a bit of visual presentation:
After Chigurh visits Llewelyn's wife, the car accident he's in is telegraphed a little too obviously in the way it's shot and edited. Maybe I've seen this particular method of presentation too many times the last few years and I'm sensitive to it, but the moment I saw the empty street and the cut to the empty cross street that he's approaching, I knew that he was going to be hit unexpectedly from the side. I've seen in in movies, TV shows, half a dozen TV commercials. If an editing technique can be a cliche, this one has become one.

So I'm reading the reviews for "Juno" on rottentomatoes(94% positive), and it strikes me that the only complaint being made by its detractors is that it's "too smart," and the lead is "too witty." What the eff? Since when is that bad?
Since people decided that you can't be entertained and have your brain stimulated at the same time.

Huh! now that you mention it I can totally see what you mean but I haven't seen that particular thing so much that it was annoying to me. Yaay no TV!

I should whine about getting more work but then I asked the janitor if she gets vacation and she said "Tuesday". I am skulking back into my priviledged chair now.

That is a wise decision (but it's 2 girls, 1 cup).

I don't think I've felt compelled to see a single movie in the theater this year.

If I was still at Walgreens I'd be working Monday, Wednesday and most likely (by choice) Tuesday as well. I need money more than I need Christmas off.
This year I will have Christmas off and the thought depresses me, because all I'm going to do all day is sit in front of the computer and all Christmas is to me is a day I could be making time-and-a-half if I were working.
Fuck I'm sad.
I'm no Scrooge though and I won't give you all some line about, being "burned out on the commercialism of it all," because that's just what people say when they have nothing to do on Christmas anyway.
Maybe I'll go see the new Aliens vs. Predator movie. Word is, it might not totally suck.

Well, I've almost got my ten favorite comics of the year picked. Unfortunately, I've got one slot left, and three comics to fill it with.
Never mind, I just narrowed it down.

I did go and see that Rodriguez/Tarantino thing. Wish I hadn't.
And I did see a cartoon that was worth it, Paprika.
