But I'm not going to let myself dwell. I leave in an hour for the airport and I get to go into a happy state of denial until the new year.
Is that in California? Gus flies down there today. For three weeks! I'll only be in Portland for one.
There's quite a few people around here who seem to have grown up into pretty straightforward, honest, and loving people despite not having the best of circumstances with divorced and separated parents. That gives me quite a bit of hope for the future, and less guilt and angst about often feeling like the kids got thrown into a buzzsaw because I pulled the "eject" button to save my own physical and mental health, and so be more than a shell of a dad to my children (self-serving as that might be).
I appreciate hearing people's stories, happy ending or not....again, thanks.
Keep in mind also that divorce is just really no big deal to most kids. It's really SOP these days. Even when I was in elementary school, 20 years ago, kids with still-married parents were the minority.
Once I hit 13 and started the generic acting up, my folks were convinced it was delayed trauma from the divorce and sent me to a counselor who specialized in that and I basically had to pretend that was the case and it was very irritating.
HOW a divorce is conducted can have a huge impact on a kid, but not really the fact that it happened in general. So don't beat yourself up there.

Thank you very much. I'm embarrassed by the confidence in my parenting abilities expressed by you and others, but if anything, I know there's people on CBR who'll set me straight if need be. (Or at least tell me to shut my trap about it).
As I think I’ve told you before, although my parents didn’t divorce until I was in my twenties, they should have divorced when I was three (the FIRST time my dad had an affair, not his last). As a result, I grew up in a household where you couldn’t cut the tension with a chainsaw. There was no screaming or yelling. Just a lot of strained faces, dirty looks and whispered angry words. Helluva environment for a kid.
My dad was a complete bastard to my mom, including cheating on her with at least two of her self-proclaimed “best friends” over the years. On one occasion, after they had separated and threatened divorce, my dad moved out for about 6 months. My mom used that opportunity to dump on me (then age 15) about what a rotten jackass my dad had been throughout their marriage. My dad, on the other hand, fessed up to his own sins, took responsibility for them, apologized to me for putting me and my brother through all this, and refrained from saying the slightest negative thing about my mom, a practice that he continues to this day, even years after their ultimate divorce.
I can honestly say that but for my dad’s attempts to own up to his responsibility for their failed marriage and his own attempts to “take the high road,” I would not have any sort of relationship with him today. As it stands, however, I have, over time, learned that things were maybe not quite as black and white as my mom made it sound when I was younger and I am now able to view the past more objectively than I might have otherwise. Moreover, I have a great relationship with both parents, as I long ago learned that their inability to live with one another had nothing at all to do with their respective relationships with me.
That said, I cannot imagine how difficult the last several months have been on you, nor can I imagine how you make it through the day when I know your heart is breaking over what the divorce has done and is doing to your kids. For what it’s worth, however, I think you have made the right decision not just for you, but for your kids as well. It is tough sledding now, but they will be better off with a dad who is not suffering under the yoke of an unhappy marriage. And, despite the invective your ex hurls about while you are not there, I am positive that it will not damage your relationship with your kids in the long run. You have shown incredible strength through this ordeal. Your kids will instinctively recognize that strength and draw on it as well. It will take time, but eventually they will learn that they can have their own relationship with you apart from and unaffected by what their mother says and does. You will have the tough job of remaining open and unafraid to take the hurt they will no doubt send your way in one form or another, but once they realize that nothing they do or their mother does will alter your love for them, the foundation for your relationship with your kids will be rock-solid now and in the future.
Best of luck with it, my friend. And, as always, if you need to talk, please call.

Moreover, I have a great relationship with both parents, as I long ago learned that their inability to live with one another had nothing at all to do with their respective relationships with me.
I'm going to piggy-back on what Doc said with a bit about my oldest brother. He divorced his first wife when my nephew was about 12. It was by far the best thing he ever did. He's have ended up killing her. Not that he was a saint (he's more of a prick than I am), but she wasn't nicknamed "The Barracuda" for no reason.
The problem was that he never made any effort to counter what she was telling my nephew about he and the rest of our family. He didn't fight her when she fucked with his visitation. He just kind of gave up and figured that James would "figure it out" when he grew up. I told him he was an idiot and offered to do his custody work for him, but what did I know. I was just the little brother. Never mind that I was making my bread-and-butter in custody fights.
What Doc's dad did was the right thing. He may have been flawed (aren't we all), but he admitted those flaws, maintained relationships and seems to have tried his best to take the high road.
Now, I have no doubt you're not going to abandon your kids, Ray. But keep in mind that they can only be fed vitriol for so long without any counter before they believe it. They aren't going to suddenly grow into an epiphany. It's all about what you do and how you take the right road.

It amazes me that anyone bothers to reply to threads started by a certain poster. In typical fashion, he has started yet another political thread by quoting an article from a partisan source at length, typed a couple of sentences in support of the article’s thesis and waited for the inevitable responses, to which he consistently responds by either ignoring any contrary points made by the other posters or merely reiterates his (or, more accurately, the RNC’s) talking points.

My kids have jumped on the Naruto bandwagon (points at avatar), but I haven't checked it out yet.
I'd be more inclined to buy the manga rather than the DVD, but they asked for the DVD for Christmas.
I really enjoy the series. The manga is more consistent in quality, but the anime can be really good when they stick to the manga story. There are a heckuva lot of filler episodes, most of which I didn't watch because the others were horrible.

“NO, STAPLER! YOU’RE WRONG!!!”

So I get up this morning to find the water to the building shut off. Yippee. I called in "dirty" to work. Ended up being 2 hours late.
Find out as I'm heading to work that it wasn't the building it was a water main that broke, as there were city construction guys tearing up the street preventing me from crossing the street to catch the bus.
Get on the bus and some jackass is spread out over the aisle all gangsta. My trying to avoid him leads to me smashing my knee into on of the benches on the bus. It was a nice dull thud externally. Internally it was OMFG PAIN!
I was tempted to just stay on the bus and head back home but went to work and limping all the way. I was asked if I was staying later and I was like "You're lucky my ass is here now!".
My knee is still throbbing and is slightly swollen as I cannot bend it to sit comfortably. The bruise is going to be nasty in the next couple days.
Here's to tomorrow morning.

Also, The Mighty Boosh is just about the best show ever.
It really is the modern equivalent of 'The Young Ones'.
Comin' atcha like a beam, like a ray, like a buzzard...
Have you seen the live one?
Definitely worth it.
Freakin' hilarious.
Precisely why I said it was generally unintentional. I don't think Zemeckis set out to make what I consider to be a Neoconservative fairy tale.
I remember thinking the second it ended, "That's three hours I'm not getting back."
Utterly a neocon fairy tale. The moral of the story is if you don't think. ever. And basically just go with the flow, you'll be successful.
That's an interesting point, but I'm not sure that it's deliberately "anti-counterculture".
Except for the part where the nice girl died of fucking dirty hippies.
Because that's what thinking will get you. Dead by fucking hippies.
Don't think. Just smile and continue playing your ping pong, citizen.
Logan is a bit Santa obsessed, which is better than Santaphobic, which is pretty common for 2 year olds. We had an office Christmas party for kids. One of my colleagues dressed as Santa and handed out gifts. When he left the party area, Logan chased him all the way back to his office.
That is super cool.

First Book is a nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. We provide an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in community-based mentoring, tutoring, and family literacy programs.
Charity Navigator (http://www.charitynavigator.org/) gave them excellent marks.
During the holidays, they're getting extra corporate matching on donations.
You can make 'in memory' donations. And if I divided my money up among my father and two aunts and grandmother, it's not like anyone would be getting anything they really need. So instead they're getting a letter that 140 books are being distributed in the name of my grandfather, who we lost in 2005. I think they'll be happy.

Yeah, you have to carry it with you through obstacles for a time. The AI mocks you the whole time and suggests you are developing an unhealthy attachment towards it. Then you have to dump it down an incinerator. The rumor is that some folks had to quit the game because they didn't want to destroy their companion cube.

Do you know my new favorite song (http://uncrediblehallq.blogspot.com/2007/10/still-alive-closing-song-by-jonathan.html)?
Have you heard "Death Star" by The Presidents of The United States?
Good evening… sing a little song… it's for you
Hanging in the stars
Suspended from the dark
Life is long and heavy
Like a shadow on a spark
And it will blow
Massive killer orb
Hovering around
Looking for a spot
To blast the good guys on the ground
Before they know
What hit ‘em from above
It's the Death Star—something so incredible
Death Star—something indestructible
Death Star—massive and maniacal
Death Star—teeny weeny vulnerable hole
Somewhere deep inside
Shifty to the core
The tank is full and fuelled
By the dark side of the force
That makes it go
To and fro… killing
Black hearted ball
Roll the devil’s dice
Destroy it one more time
Cuz it's so good they built it twice
But now no more
No more, no more
It's the Death Star—something so incredible
Death Star—something indestructible
Death Star—massive and maniacal
Death Star—teeny weeny vulnerable
Death Star—something so incredible
Death Star—something indestructible
Death Star—massive and maniacal
Death Star—teeny weeny vulnerable hole
Goodbye, Death Star
You were… the largest weapon… ever manufactured

I love her boobs, at least I did a a few years ago. When they dress her up right, they are perfect.
Personally I've always felt that the type of bikini top she's wearing is the least flattering possible, but all celebrities seem to love it.
Although some of the the 'fat calling' is a bit mean-spirited, I must admit that whoever came up with the line 'I Know What You Ate Last Summer" is a genius.

One of my co-workers is having a going-away party; this is officially her last day. She's moving up to Albany to begin her master's. She loves her new apartment & neighborhood.
Her life story is unbelievable. Orphaned as a baby, she was raised by her aunt & uncle. She completed her Bachelor's in Ohio (where she's originally from), met her husband, and had a daughter. Her husband turned out to be an asshole-- physically & verbally abused her. She left him and spent the next year homeless with her young daughter. A relative in New York contacted her and told her to move to the area- that they would help her find some stablility in her life.
It turns out, it was the best decision she made: she got a decent-paying job and met her current boyfriend who is a nice guy. Now, they're moving up to Albany.
She got word a couple or so years ago that her ex-husband was in the hospital dying and paid him one final visit to tell him the pain he put her through during their marriage. She also told him that she's happy now and has never regretted leaving him. Closure.
NB: She's 41.

I'm thinking it's a three-disc collection with a bunch of Hitch's early films on it. I picked one up not so long ago. The transfers aren't great, but it's a lot of bang for the buck.

I've got something like that, too. Maybe 10 of his earliest films.
Supercheap - maybe just $2 a flick, or something along those lines. I about it maybe 2 years back, along with a similar 'Film Noir' package.

You just want to say "sorry your disappointed, I wish I had as little to care about in my life that getting done on time would upset me."Nah, she's under pressure for other reasons. This project has snowballed and become bigger than we expected. Major, useless changes forced on us from above.
It's the tone that bothers me, and the fact that it doesn't surprise me. I learned earlier this year that our friendship/relationship is more limited than I'd like.
