Ok but you would accept anti-religious fanatacism, right?
Oh, absolutely. The problem Jesse, is that you were saying that it's anti-religion, period. Which others and I disagree with.

Poke poke poke.
Sorry to poke this with a stick, but....
I do not feel that THE MIST is anti-religious. It is anti-fanaticism.
A character (can't remember who...the biker maybe?) explicitly states to Mrs. Carmody, "Oh, I believe in God, I just don't think he's the bloodthirsty sonofabitch that you think he is."
Excellent example and excellent line by the biker.
Ok but you would accept anti-religious fanatacism, right?
Sure, but what's wrong with a movie that is against religious fanaticism as one of its themes wins points from me, not loses them.

You are confused, I am offended by the bad storytelling, not that it is anti-religious.
I think it has been firmly established that you are, in fact, NOT offended by bad storytelling.
You seem to quite enjoy it, in fact.

Storytelling is less important than asses in the seats, it's consumerist populism at its best. When the people speak by attending the spectacle in record numbers, the intrinsic goodness is self-evident, obviously.

Here it is again:
Oh man, really? I normally love Andre Braugher and thought he did the worst he has ever done. Also: the fucking worst CGI in the history of man, a completely boring overly long waste of celluloid, the dumbest anti-religion agenda I have ever seen. Who the hell says, here strange woman, I want you to physically hold and stroke my child, my supposed dearest possession, who I had very little problem shooting in the face. Oh yeah, not to mention where the hell did the tentacles go, we never saw them again the entire rest of the movie and never learned which creature they came from? Oh ,and I don't care how scared and crazy you become, there is never a rationale for stabbing someone. This movie irrtitaed me so much i cannot even continue bashing it.

end of spoilers
I liked the CGI, except for a couple spotty parts, and it definitely wasn't the "worst CGI in the history of man". Totally subjective there.
The second point isn't an actual point at all. Might as well just say, "I didn't like it."
We've discussed, dissected, and negated the anti-religious agenda comment.
I commented on the tentacles part.
The stabbing scene was commented on by others too, and most agreed it wasn't the best part. I'm still ok with it in the long run though because it helped show the extremity of the breakdown. The whole bit the child says about saving him from the monsters is about those on the outside and the humans inside the store.
None of the comments you say were ignore were actually ignored.

What say you?
A good year for comic books
The best 2007 had to offer
Jesse O'Brien Comics Editor
It is now time for what I have so originally dubbed The 1st Annual BostonNOW awards for achievement in the field of comic booking. I figure I've griped enough throughout the year about what's bugged me and now it's time to give props to those who deserve it.
So without further adieu, the winners are:
Best Story: The Sinestro Corps War (DC, Green Lantern titles)
Runner up: Messiah Complex (Marvel, all X-Men titles)
Hands down, "The Sinestro Corps War" was the best crossover event of 2007. Where else are you going to see a brand new Ion, Kyle Rayner corrupted by Parrallax, the return of villains like Anti-Monitor, Superboy-Prime, and Hank Henshaw, the Cyborg Superman, as well as Batman almost getting recruited into Sinestro's army? It was all here. Credit Geoff Johns and Peter J. Tomasi for some concise stories and few tie-ins that made this the most enjoyable (and affordable) event of the year.
Best Series: Teen Titans (DC)
Runner-up: Astonishing X-Men (Marvel)
Comeback of the Year: The Flash (Wally West) and family
Runners up: Angel (Angel: After the Fall)
Villain of the Year: Ultron
Runner up: Tony Stark/Iron Man
For all you Ultron lovers out there, 2007 gave us the new, female Ultron over in Mighty Avengers while the original Ultron most recently popped up in space as the mastermind behind the Phalanx in Annihilation.
Coolest moment: Cyclops isn't that powerless (Astonishing X-Men # 23)
Runner up: The Hulk takes a queen, unites a planet, and Bruce Banner finally shows up during "Planet Hulk." (Incredible Hulk # 103)
Best Beatdown: The Mighty Thor gives Iron Man a "mighty" butt kickin'. (Thor # 3)
Runner-up: Spidey give Kingpin the prison beating of a lifetime. (Amazing Spider-Man # 542)
Best shock ending: 355 get shot...and dies. (Y the Last Man # 58)
Runner up: Skrull Elektra. (New Avengers # 31)
Comic movie of the Year: 30 Days of Night
Bummer of the Year: Marvel canceling Irredeemable Ant-Man and Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E.
They were both the "Arrested Development" of the comic world, shot down in their prime.
Character to watch in 2008: Simon Dark (Simon Dark)
Runners up: The Irredeemable Ant-Man (Avengers: The Initiative), Machine Man (Ms. Marvel)

Hard 'Hobbit' to Break: Jackson's In
By JAKE COYLE, AP Entertainment Writer
Tuesday, December 18, 2007
(12-18) 11:56 PST New York (AP) --
Bilbo lives!
After publicly feuding for more than a year, "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," a planned two-film prequel to the blockbuster trilogy.
Jackson, who directed "Rings," will serve as executive producer for two "Hobbit" pictures. They will tell the story of how the young hobbit Bilbo Baggins originally came to possess the nefarious One Ring that Frodo, his adopted heir, needed three films to dispose of.
A director for the films has yet to be named. Production is tentatively set to begin in 2009 with a release planned for 2010, and the sequel following in 2011.
Relations between Jackson and New Line soured after "Rings" despite a collective worldwide box office gross of nearly $3 billion. Jackson shepherded Tolkien's Middle-Earth saga to a combined 17 Academy Awards including best picture for 2003's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." The trilogy also includes 2002's "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" and 2001's "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring."
"I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line," Jackson said in a statement. "We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth."
Late last year, acrimony between the 46-year-old Jackson and New Line became very public, with the studio announcing they would move forward with "The Hobbit" without him. Jackson sued New Line over the amount he was paid — including DVD payments — for "The Fellowship of the Ring," the first installment of the trilogy.
"The low point was when we both started getting a little too personal about this whole thing," said New Line co-chairman and co-CEO Bob Shaye on Tuesday. "From my own perspective, I realized that I shouldn't be so thin-skinned about everything that goes on in my professional life."
Jackson's suit, the two sides announced Tuesday, has been settled. The terms of the settlement weren't announced, though Shaye cheerfully said: "One of the key terms was we all shake hands with each other."
In his statement, Jackson thanked Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) Chairman and CEO Harry Sloan for helping him and New Line "find the common ground necessary to continue that journey."
New Line, which is owned by Time Warner Inc., holds the rights to produce "The Hobbit," while MGM, which is owned by a consortium including Sony Corp. and Comcast Corp., has the right to distribute it. The two studios will split financing and distribution costs, with New Line handling distribution in North America and MGM distributing internationally.
Two "Hobbit" films are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, similar to how the three "Lord of the Rings" films were made all at once. Shaye and Sloan both said it was Jackson's idea to divide the story, adapted from Tolkien's first book about Middle Earth (which was about half the length of any from the trilogy that followed).
The film's production schedule is subject to how long the writers strike lasts, which some forecast could continue for many months. There isn't currently a script for either "Hobbit" film, and producers will be unable to even approach writers until the strike is over.
"If the writers strike drags on, then everything can change in terms of the time table," Sloan said Tuesday.
Sloan added that some patience has been necessary for making "The Hobbit" happen: "We've always taken the position that we wanted Peter to be involved in this project, but it's taken some time to work out the differences."
Jackson, who directed "King Kong" after finishing the trilogy, is currently finishing shooting for "The Lovely Bones," based on Alice Sebold's novel.
The three "Lord of the Rings" films rank among the 25 most lucrative films of all time, made more financially successful by the risky strategy of shooting all three together. The production budget for the trilogy has been estimated at around $300 million.
Tolkien's fantasy epic has been a cultural juggernaut since its publication in the 1950s, inspiring everything from the ubiquitous "Frodo Lives!" graffiti in the '60s and '70s to the Dungeons and Dragons phenomenon of the '80s. With the franchise now considered one of the most bankable projects in Hollywood, the "Hobbit" films will be expected to match the blockbuster success of "Rings."

Hey, as long as he and Fran Walsh write it, and WETA does the effects, the director is practically meaningless.

I'm not sure THE HOBBIT warrants two films. Compared to the amount of stuff crammed into LotR, there really isn't that much necessary content or thematic weight to THE HOBBIT.
I'm glad Jackson's on board, though I really wish he was directing.

This is all still in the speculative stage...but remember the news of a Spiderman musical to be directed by Julie Taymor? Well, for the first industry reading she used Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2007/12/julie_taymor_and_bonos_spiderm.html#gs-hp). The article speculates that these actors might just have been filling in for the reading but who knows.

No, but the point is, the director is never unimportant.
To use an analogy, a bad conductor is probably going to produce a bad concert, even if you have good musicians and an excellent choice of music.

Aaah! I wouldn't quite say that about Ms. Wood. She's quite talented and, though she hasn't been there a lot recently, she got her start in the theatre in North Carolina.
But for the actual thing, my feelings about a Spiderman musical aside, that feels an awful lot like miscasting.

The part I liked the least was every single minute after Thomas Jane tries to convince Andre Braugher about the tentacles that ahd just killed the bag boy
I disagree, it is needlessly a slam against organized religion saying that it is started by crazy people and breeds craziness within it. I don't really care if its straight from the novella it doesn't make that good, either.
There are three groups represented in the movie, two of which are shown to be unreasonable. Braugher's group doesn't believe anything has gone wrong. In the novella, the narrator calls them the "flat earthers" because they're ignoring the evidence. Crazy Lady knows things are seriously screwed up, but interprets the evidence to fit her preconceived notion of what's going on. Jane's group knows that things have gone wrong, but they respond to evidence as it's presented, not by trying to fit it into their belief system.
King/Darabont have set up a three way conflict, between blind belief, irrational denial, and informed belief.
It isn't anti-religion in the least, it's about informed, rational belief being a better choice than irrational belief or irrational denial. Look closely and you'll see that Braugher's flat-earthers are shown as just as foolish as Crazy Lady's zealots.
Wait, crazy lady whips up a fury and all of her followers resort to their basest instincts and are willing to kill people for their cause and you don;t see it as an overt slam against religion?
No more than Jim Jones or any number of other extremists doing the same thing is an indictment of religion.
So you are saying there is nothing anti-religious about the movie?
There is not. It actually argues in favor of rational belief, thoughtful faith.
See that's bullshit, then what is the point of the crazy lady inducing the rest of the store patrons to follow her lead and sacrifice and kill at least one person, with plans for many more? Why does she specifically refernce heaven and hell and those who will be saved, etc.? She is fringe or radical for sure but she believes in her own brand of Christianity and teaches her disciples to do the same.
The point is to balance that irrational, unquestioning belief against Braugher's, irrational disbelief and show that both approaches are faulty.
Go back and look at the way she "converts" to her cause and they way she whips them into a frenzy and tell me how Darabont/King are not ridiculing religion.
Go back and take a look at The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. They're not ridiculing religion, they're promoting the idea of rational faith, or hope if you prefer. The stories Shawshank and The Mist are based on end very similarly, with the message somewhat the same--believe, hope, have faith, and do something about it. Belief, hope, by itself isn't enough if you don't take action to improve your circumstances, but it can serve as a motivation over time. The two have to work together in a healthy way.
Do you not see that it is exactly how it was in history with people who nowadays we would consider freaks and weirdos, but then were able to generate enough followers to establish their own branches of Christianity? Its old school, dude, not currently active.
It happens routinely. Charismatic leaders take advantage of people in a difficult situation. The US by itself has numerous cults that take advantage of exactly the kind of situations you describe.
Hey kettle you are black, too you know. Open your mind that its not just what is shown on screen or written down, read a little deeper sometimes.
Personally, I like to base my reaction and interpretation by what I see and hear in the movie. Reading more deeply is wonderful, but that has to come from a fair reading of the material as presented.
The only thing left that noone has answered is what were the tentacles attached to, and where did that creature go?
It doesn't matter. The point is that there are nasty things out there and they're waiting outside to try to get you.

I'm less enamored with The Green Mile, but I thought the presentation and direction were top-notch, nonetheless.

(And, yes, OK, I realize Hollywood actors are all airbrushed in publicity photos. I lived in Malibu for 3 years. Believe me, once you've seen Cher or Richard Gere or any of a number of actors in public sans make-up, it will take away any illusions one might have.)

He's a hell of a good performer. I can close my eyes and see scenes from "The Pit and the Pendulum" and "Masque of the Red Death" -- Poe stories I love -- being masterfully and crazily acted out by Price. He really is an iconic figure with amazing screen presence.
Dr.Phibes for the win.
I love those films.
Zombie movies are just a vehicle for the message that all humans want to do is eat the brains of other humans.
Organized humanism is the worst.
The best zombie films are the ones where the zombies are pretty much irrelevant, and where the main point of the film is how people react when forced to co-exist in a stressful environment.
In other movie news, Val Kilmer has signed on to make a REAL GENIUS sequel.
This pleases me.
