You really think they're the same person? I'm not convinced yet. If they're really two people, they should move in together. It'd be a great reality show.

So I've been thinking about starting to watch The Office, is it any good?
Yes. Start with the British series first, though. Only 13 episodes (all available on DVD), but they're stellar, and will get you into it faster than the NBC series. Anyone who's worked in an office should see this show. (Netflix has it all available for watching over the internet.)

The NBC series took a turn after its rocky first season, and it's very much a different show than it started out as. Really good stuff too. I'm about a season behind, but everyone I've talked to says it's just getting better and better.

And with that, I'm off to bed. Happy New Year everybody.

I remember someone on CBR doing an experiment by acting homeless. Maybe this was you?

I've done that, but it was over a decade ago and I don't remember posting about it on CBR.

The time someone mistook me for a homeless person was at a mass transit station near a soup truck, I was NOT pretending to be homeless. OY!

We were all asleep by 8:30PM.

We're DULL.

We were in bed by 12:30 am. We dropped my daughter off her her party, picked up some takeout from Applebees (mistake BTW), and then played Dance Dance Revolution to bring in the New Year.

My hiatal hernia was acting up last night and I got some massive indigestion for some reason (probably that nasty Applebees stuff) so no alcohol for me.

I can't follow college ball. Changes way too much for me to bother following. NFL changes enough.

High school was Portage Central. We were second in the state my senior year. Pete Metzelaars (http://www.nfl.com/players/petemetzelaars/profile?id=MET593270) was our quarterback. He went on to be a tight end for the Seahawks and the Bills mostly. Ended up at Detroit, the poor bastard. Probably just wanted to be closer to home.

Great guy, too, on a team full of asshole jocks. He was probably cool because until puberty filled him out some, he was a tall, pale, skinny redheaded guy with thick horn rimmed glasses. Nice geek gone good.

I followed college football when I lived in Oregon. It made water cooler conversation very easy. And I had a friend with OSU season tickets and sometimes a spare seat.

When I flew home from Portland a couple days ago, the first leg was an early morning flight to San Francisco. Turns out that OSU was playing Maryland (?!) in San Francisco late that afternoon, so half the plane was garbed in orange. And already drinking. It was very festive. And not at all obnoxious. (Sincerely. They were just happy.)

My undergrad didn't have a football team, and everything in North Dakota is lower division, so I've completely lost touch again.

I wonder whether Gus is going to the parade.

There's an entire book on the use/popularity of primates in comics. (Is that an adequate catch-all?) :

They may be only one notch below humans on the evolutionary ladder, but gorillas and monkeys have for decades climbed to the top of the comic-book world as monsters, super-villains, sentient masterminds, soldiers, aliens, buffoons, and super-heroes. COMICS GONE APE! is the definitive missing link to everything you need to know about these popular primates, including Gorilla Grodd, Beppo the Super-Monkey, BrainiApe, King Kong, Titano the Super-Ape, Cy-Gor, Konga, Magilla Gorilla, Detective Chimp, Blip, Gleek, the Gibbon, Lancelot Link Secret Chimp, Mojo Jojo, Angel and the Ape, and a barrel of others. Comics Gone Ape! is loaded with comics artwork, a chest-thumping gallery of comics covers featuring apes, and behind-the-scenes looks at Planet of the Apes, Arthur Adams’ Monkeyman and O’Brien, and Joe Kubert’'s Tarzan. With its all-new Avengers-as-gorillas cover by Arthur Adams, you won’t be able to keep your filthy paws off this book!

I followed college football when I lived in Oregon. It made water cooler conversation very easy. And I had a friend with OSU season tickets and sometimes a spare seat.

Growing up in Lansing Michigan next to Michigan State it was a tad crazy in the fall. I was a huge college football fan as a kid.

I attended a small New England Division III college and the Easterners and New Englanders would look at me like I had 2 heads when I would mention I was a Michigan State fan (but you're NOT a student or alum was their curious reply) . . they just don't understand out here.

Partyin' college sports fans are the best. A huge difference from partyin' pro sports fans here in Philadelphia that are obnoxious, vulgar, and sometimes dangerous.

My undergrad didn't have a football team, and everything in North Dakota is lower division, so I've completely lost touch again.

Yeah, that's the one thing I really missed out on in undergrad. Then again, I got to go to Europe, parts of the Caribbean, and had a guaranteed job for five years after graduation.

I think it was a family tradition to go regularly. They lived right there. But I'm feeling fuzzy on that point.

When younger, Gus's father drove a charter bus, and Rose Bowl party buses were a big moneymaker for the company. They didn't always tip well, however. And the bus driver had to clean up afterwards.

When I was in my apartment, the laundry room was one washer and one dryer in this tiny room that jutted out into the hall just outside my apartment door. A robe and slippers were all that was necessary for the five foot journey. And as long as I avoided weekends, I had it all to myself.

whew . . *wipes forehead*

I'm glad I only had 2 drinks last night. I'd hate to think what I'd feel like if I had more.

2 drinks over 5 hours... god I suck.

Yeah, I can't drink anymore either. I was never much of a drinker, but now, for a guy my size (I'm about 200 lbs) I'm a real light weight.

A few weeks ago I had 3 margaritas for lunch and was toast for the rest of the afternoon.

I polished off a bottle of wine Christmas Eve, but then had a massive hangover Christmas Day.

Why is that?

Someone else told me the same thing when I told them my sob story.

The tannins maybe. That would explain red being worse than white.

The tannins maybe. That would explain red being worse than white. The sheer amount of sugar is a pretty big part of it, too. That's why mixed drinks will give you a worse hangover than straight booze.

So last night whiny relatives ruined the fireworks.

Excerpts from the night:

"Stop it! Save some for midnight!"
"Stop it! It's too dangerous."
"Stop it! Let's eat dinner!"
"Stop it! We're going to read the prayer."
"Stop it! We're going to read a poem I wrote."
"Stop it! We're breaking the piñata!"

Imagine all that repeated in a 90 minute interval in several degrees of whiny noises, every phrase repeated at least 10 times in rapid staccato voices.

Fuck that. Next year I'm not buying nor bringing the smallest firecracker.

I'm starting to get more and more nervous about tomorrow.

At my last two schools, the principal had me stand on a chair during a meeting the first work day and introduce myself. This must be in the principal's handbook.

I've had coaches require new team members to do something embarrassing such as sing the first day of practice.

There is a faculty and staff meeting first thing tomorrow morning. The first item on the agenda is "introduction of new staff".

I was hoping to be able to disappear into my office and do some lesson planning and let the meeting new people part of the job just happen a little bit at a time.

I think it's just because Gilda is too short.

Well, and principals are usually fairly stupid.

If I wasn't sure that it would get you off on a really bad foot, I'd say you should tell anyone who wants you to get on a chair to introduce yourself that you need an organ grinder and a hat for tips if you are expected to play the role of a monkey.

One was a jock type, and ran the staff like he was the coach and we were his team, and the other a touchy-feely type who saw the staff as like a family. Pretty much opposite ends of the leadership style spectrum, neither of which I really care for.

I think the reasoning is that sooner or later you're going to have to get up in front of the group at a meeting and lead some kind of discussion, or give a presentation, or just give feedback during a discussion, so it's best to get past any shyness that one might have regarding that right away.

I have students do ice breakers at the beginning of school each year, but I do it a little more low key, and let the speaking to the whole group thing come later after they've gotten to know each other a bit better.
