Winslow, why I voted for you:

0. The purpose of this award is to promote the spirit of good citizenship, civility, and mutual respect, which is one of the things that most distinguishes CBR from other forums like it. Everyone who votes for COTY is asked to behave in accordance with that spirit. COTY should not be used as a tool in political rivalries between different CBR communities; instead, it should be a means of bringing those communities closer together.

1. Select the CBR citizen who, over the course of the past year, has consistently conducted himself/herself in a manner that has helped to foster a friendly, welcoming atmosphere at the CBR Forums. This poster is being recognized for being friendly, courteous, and helpful. REMEMBER: COTY is *not* a popularity contest; it is a recognition for being an exemplary member of the community.

I'm pretty sure that's what I hear.

EDIT: Though on a closer listen it might be:

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

Evening people.

My last call of the night:

Drunken Jackass: "Either you tell me what the last transaction on my account was or tomorrow I'm taking all my money to another bank!"
Me: "I would love to, sir, but I do not have enough information for you to be properly identified."
DJ: "Then you should ask me easier questions! I can't believe this is how Wells Fargo treats its customers!"
Me (about ready to blow my top, this had been going on for ten minutes): "I am not going to jeopardize my job and your financial security by revealing account information to you without following proper security procedures, sir, and no matter what you say that is not going to change."
DJ: *short pause* "FUCK YOU!" *click!*

Aw,
he didn't give you enough time
to wish him good luck
finding a bank to transfer to

I went ahead and got Will the last 17 episodes of Astroboy.

I'm not spoiling him, though. I have a good excuse. He's going to have several friends over for New Years Eve/Molly's birthday party tomorrow, and I thought this would provide some good entertainment for them.

We have pizza, anime, comic books, board games, and videogames along with various other snack foods. We got two more controllers for the X-box so they can play four player cooperative.

We had two parents pull their kids out after having already accepted for the obvious reason, but that there were only two is, I think, a good sign.

I don't know if I'm more nervous about having a dozen kids to entertain for six hours tomorrow night with half of those sleeping over or starting work Wednesday.

Sounds awesome.

Is it a program that offers accreditation toward becoming a certified reading specialist?

No, the reading class is remedial, a non-credit class for incoming freshmen who need a refresher in basic reading skills and students who left high school without graduating that are going through the college's high school diploma program.

To get that sort of certification, you'd have to go to one of the four year schools, I think.

Oh, and have you picked out a daycare?

Yep. The school has free daycare for employees and instructors. I'm going to check that out once they actually have people there next week--it's staffed by students on a work-study program--and if I don't like it, Little Dent will go to Emily's employer's daycare.

I'd like to have her close by just for convenience and so I can visit during the day, but if the quality of the facility isn't adequate, we'll put up with the inconvenience of my having to pick her up at Emily's employer after work each day.

Mom doesn't begin classes for another week, so she'll have her up until classes begin.

So, to continue the discussion of Absolute Editions from last night, what would make for good future Absolute Editions? Either single volumes for a collected limited series, or multiple volumes for longer finite series, similar to Sandman.

I think Preacher would be an obvious choice for a multiple volume Absolute Edition. Three to four volumes, as with Sandman. I could see Moore's Swamp Thing making a good two volume collection.

Justice would make for a nice single volume. It's exactly the kind of limited series event that seems tailor made for a big, single volume collection, right along side Kingdom Come and The New Frontier.

On a related note, though, using the word "absolute" that way is already getting pretty tired. I guess it's a testament to the power of the old Absolut Vodka ads, but it'd be nice if people would actually come up with their own ideas once in awhile.

Thanks. I like kids a lot, so this is actually going to be a little less taxing, I hope, than going to an adult party would be. Three adults to twelve to fourteen tweens isn't a bad ratio, I think, and we may get another chaperone from one of the parents.

The work thing nervousness isn't about the work itself--I think I can handle the teaching part just fine. It's the part where I have to deal with a whole group of new people, joining a new social group that's most anxiety inducing.

Also, I have to learn to use Powerpoint. I'm not sure how useful it will be for a literature and reading instructor, but I wanted the job so I was cheerful and enthusiastic about learning it.

It's the part where I have to deal with a whole group of new people, joining a new social group.I know what you mean. Joining new social circles can be pretty taxing for me at times as well, especially if it's a forced social situation. (In-laws, ugh).

Usually, when starting a new job, I try to keep a general attitude of ambivalence to the social aspect of it at first. Keep the mind-set of "I'm here for work, not social acceptance" and it usually takes the edge off and helps me focus on what actually needs to be done vs. worrying too much about being universally accepted the moment I walk in the door.

More often than not, the social aspect of it will fall into line nicely. Unless you're generally a hard person to get along with, all it really takes it time. (and yeah, I realize I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know).

This has in the past been my problem. It's not that I'm hard to get along with so much as I'm hard to get to know. I haven't participated much in any of the social aspects of things, which in SOCAL was fine, but wasn't at my last school here. I wasn't hostile, but I never let anyone in, which was in turn interpreted as hostile.

But, I have another year of therapy under my belt, and I'm on some nice drugs, so I'm hopeful things will go better this time.

That's why it's nice to have relationships, kids, families, etc. at home. It's nice knowing you have that group of people who (for the most part) unconditionally love and accept you. Makes operating in the world just a little bit easier, I think.

And good luck with everything. Fortunately, it sounds like you'll be too busy to fret much one way or the other.

Decisions . .decisions . . .

I'm sucked into the Naruto storyline . .

$189 for the complete manga first arc storyline (27 volumes) or $250 for the incomplete uncut anime collection.

Or maybe just giving up on the thing (dang this hobby is expensive).

Both. :D

The manga is a better storyline. The anime changes some things and usually not for the better.

The anime fills in details and adds background info to flesh it out. Sometimes, that's good and sometimes it runs counter to the story as it continues to develop. And as per standard anime convention, the battles can be overlong with lots of dramatic poses and flashbacks. But when it gets it right, it really does. And IMO, the music adds a lot to the story.

As Athena was saying, the manga stuff ends around episode 135 in the anime and then the rest is filler, although they space out some of the last few canon scenes through the next 80 episodes. I've only watched a few of them, but I strongly recommend avoiding those. I guess you can watch them when they're on CN, but don't bother buying them when they come out.

There are a few filler episodes before then (episodes 101-107), but they aren't nearly as bad as the stuff that comes later.

I have both, but I've re-watched anime episodes a lot more often than re-reading the manga chapters.

So upon giving my VCR to a local charity I discovered I do not need tapes any more. Unfortunately this means giving up:

The Gift (Perry Farrell's Janes Addiction movie) its crap, but its kind of unique.
Run Lola Run
The Crow
SLC Punk
Wall Street
Primal Fear
L.A. Confidential
Groove
Donnie Brasco
Varsity Blues
Hard Boiled and The Killer
Swing Kids

These were the only tapes I have kept through about 3 moves so I apparently have some DVDs to purchase now.

Is The Killer ever going to get re-released on DVD? I'd like to get it, but I don't feel like paying $18 for a used copy.

howyadoin has me remember an adult story:

I got a lot of "the Lord works in mysterious ways", which, even to a 5-year-old, sounded like a bullshit answer.

Heh, I was sitting at a bus stop reading several years back. I was approached by two identically suited men, one of whom asked me if I liked to read. I said "Obviously". He smiled and said "Would you like to read this?" and offered me the Book of Mormon. I grinned and told him I already had it. He was surprised and asked me what I thought. I said, "Well, I've only read about a quarter of the way through, but I have issue with any religion that starts off with the new leader lying to lure a man out of his house so they can kill him and steal the Ten Commandment tablets. How does that make sense? Break three of the rules on the 'rule book' you're trying to acquire right from the start?"

He looked me right in the face and said "Well, sometimes the Lord requires such things."

My laughter was LOUD and LONG and they looked embarrassed and went away. :)

"Jason? Wow, I wasn't expecting to get a live person! Well, I guess you can transfer me back into the automated system, but you know what? Checking my account is not important. What is important, Jason, is Jesus Christ."

He then talked for three minutes straight without any input from me. When he was finished, I was quite angry.

"Sir, are you aware that every call I answer wherein I don't get anything done is counted against me?"

*pause* "Um, no..."

"Then can I help you with anything banking-related today?"

Both. :D

The manga is a better storyline. The anime changes some things and usually not for the better.

The anime fills in details and adds background info to flesh it out. Sometimes, that's good and sometimes it runs counter to the story as it continues to develop.

I've noticed plot cohesion is not something Japanese storyteller think is important.

I'm leaning towards the manga simply because I enjoy the art form more.

And as per standard anime convention, the battles can be overlong with lots of dramatic poses and flashbacks.

The "dragging out oif the battles drives me a little nuts (I'm new to anime), especially when you get a play by play recap after the action takes place - it spoils the intense momentum of the action and "takes me out of the story"

But when it gets it right, it really does. And IMO, the music adds a lot to the story.

I agree.

And I love the "reggae type" ending at the end of each episode.

Helpful yet unhelpful ;) . . .thanks Nick.

Do you need more specific critiques of the filler eps?

Episode 101 is a comedy episode where Team 7 tries to see underneath Kakashi's mask. The following arc is a filler arc that repeats the themes of Naruto's meeting with Inari.

I don't know how to describe the first filler arc after 135 without spoiling a lot, but it had some NaruSaku scenes so it wasn't a total loss to me even if a lot of the characterization was really strained. The second one features the return of Mizuki and he turns into Tony the Tiger. It's silly, but not in a fun way and the fights are too dragged out. The next two arcs are as far as I watched and since I'm not sure how far you've seen, but the feature Naruto working with two of the other genin teams and give screentime to those other genins, but it's not exactly good screentime.

She really likes an angled downspout that in the summer she uses to get on the roof. She was run up and sliding down. Fergus tried and got stuck; he's a big boy and not terribly agile.

Morning, boys and girls.

Went with the kids to a Game Stop this weekend. Unfortunately for my bank account, they had "buy 2 used games, get 1 free." That equalled 4 Nintendo DS Lite games, 2 Playstation 2 games, and a PS 3 game.

DS Lite: Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hour Glass, Spiderman: Friends or Foe, The Sims: Pets, and Ice Age 2.

PS2: The Lord of the Rings: Third Age, and World Championship Poker

PS3: Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War

Bladestorm is an interesting game. It's made by the gang over at Koei. Koei used to make the absolute best historical simulation games on the market. I pulled several all-nighters in high school and college playing "Nobunaga's Ambition" and "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" which were slow, turn-based, hexagon-squared games about conquering Japan and China, respectively. Koei then completely reversed itself and moved into button-mashing with the fun, if repetitive, Dynasty Warriors series, which were loosely based on the Chinese Romance of the Three Kingdoms stories of the building of a united China.

Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires was the first major move back into the historical simulation gaming that originally hooked me into the Koei games. Well, Bladestorm is the next step in the process. The game is HUGE. Overwhelmingly, confusingly huge. Briefly attempting to note plot, you become a mercenary, and fight in battles for either France or England in the Hundred Years War fought in Northern France in the 15th Century. Being a mercenary you fight on both sides, and sometimes liberate the same city you took over a couple of turns before.

There is an overarching story arc and featured characters showing up as you move along, but the heart of the game is in commanding various weapon classes like sword, bow, horse, trebuchet, club, knife, and pole, and getting experience in order to achieve skill points that increase your firepower and leadership abilities. Running along a battlefield with 12 Viking clubsmen, and then all 12 attacking separate targets, while you utilize the occasional special command while fighting yourself is pretty cool. And certain weapons work better against certain classes. Like a real battle, sword and shield units just wipe out bowmen, who in turn can sit back from a distance and launch wave after wave of fighting. Cavalry units in an open plain will just devastate people on foot, unless they're they're polemen entrenched, but if you can get the horsemen in a tight alley or close fighting and the guys and their horses are toast.

If this is the next generation in games, a combination of historical simulation, real time strategy and selective button-mashing, then I'm pretty happy about it.

This is kind of hilarious:

If Illinois' collective performance Friday night at the 52nd Lawry's Beef Bowl is a reliable indicator, then USC could be in trouble in the Rose Bowl.

One night after the Trojans' traveling party set a Lawry's record by ingesting 799 pounds of prime rib, the Illini shredded that mark by putting 870 pounds' worth of the succulent meat.

"This is Tuesday of (a normal) game week, so we're OK," Illinois coach Ron Zook said.

It's worth noting though, that Illinois' performance might need to come with an asterisk.

While USC brought 175 players, coaches and others in its traveling party, Illinois set another Lawry's record by bringing 215 people to the private affair.

The Illini had so many players, coaches, managers, spouses, etc. taking part in the event, it took 30 minutes for everyone to walk through the red-carpet gantlet and find a seat.

"It doesn't matter," said Lawry's representative, Todd Erickson, who's been handling the Beef Bowl for 15 years. "It's still a record."

In the 51 previous Beef Bowls, the winner also went on to take the Rose Bowl 35 times.

That's a .686 winning percentage that would be higher if not for Michigan's terrible Rose Bowl showings. The Wolverines are 13-3 in Beef Bowls but 5-11 in Rose Bowls during the Lawry's era.

Since it's that time of year, looking at the year-end from a comics perspective.....

Did anyone else notice that Kurt Busiek was years ahead on the whole hero registration thing? I picked up the "Astro City: Confession" trade from the library and was kind of taken aback that Busiek had already covered the ID territory pretty effectively and in a narratively satisfyingly way (sometimes more isn't better) back in what, '96 and '97?

I guess you can't copyright the story concept of government regulation of superheroes, but I'll be damned if this isn't the case to make it. Busiek should be collecting royalties on every copy of Civil War and its tie-ins.

I don't know I usually get 18 oz prime rib and probably 6 oz of it is fat, I could probably eat two, if I really wanted to.

They count the fat? Eww.

I didn't eat steak even when I was a meat-eater, but I was figuring that two quarter-pounders is usually about the best that I could do. Maybe double that by taking off all the garnish and bread, but I'd still be only halfway there. But if that's not how it's measured, all bets are off.

So, this past year, my mortgage was sold to another loan company. The letter I got was that nothing would change, business as usual, you know the drill.

I just got a property tax invoice payment due January 22nd. This is my first property tax invoice I've received.... EVER. Seriously, never seen one before.

So I call my mortgage company and ask why I'm getting this invoice.

Turns out, in order to make interest investment, rather than pay the property tax quarterly and on time like my previous company did, they wait until the payment becomes due and pay it all then.

"So, you *ARE* going to pay this tax bill, right?"

"Yessir, we will pay it ON it's due date, to be mailed out on the 20th"

"...ummmmm, the 20th is a Sunday, ma'am."

"Well, whatever date it is, then."

So tell me, if the Tax folk don't get their payment on time, and send me another due notice, what are the chances of me actually collecting on a frivolous lawsuit concerning mental anguish or something like that.

No, really, I'm serious.

Well I just see every major story Marvel is doing now as something they already did with the X-Books in the past. So my view is tainted.

All powerful mutant changes reality, creating a new world that the heroes band together to fix - House of M or Age of Apocalypse?

Forcing registration with heroes being hunted by villains who are sponsered by the government - Civil War or X-Men?

Replacing Wolverine with a Skrull - X-Men or Secret Invasion?

That's your appartment? That's awesome.

It's like Hi Fidelity, only with books.

It is by far one of the best Jap Monster (suited) Movies that has been made.
I was totally blown away when I first saw it.
