Cons: You can't run the latest games (but I'm guessing that's not a big issue for you). You can't (of course) run software made for Windows (such as Photoshop, Office) without some kind of Windows emulation software. And there is a bit of a learning curve.

Pros: No viruses* or spyware. Ever. Far more stable, secure, and faster than Windows. Better customisation and control options. Pretty much every software application you can think of for Windows has an equivalent package for Linux. Photo editing, office software, music library with iPod synch, CD and DVD ripping and burning...it's all available. And it's all free.

It is easy to use, but the wireless networking can get difficult, if that's something you want to do.

Yes. I did neglect to mention that; I don't do wireless myself, so I didn't give it a thought. It is improving all the time, though.

Also, when I talk about Linux, I'm talking about Ubuntu Linux in particular, as that's the only version I have any experience with.

There was no good food. That reminds me, at the department Christmas party a few weeks ago we had this no-flour chocolate cake that was DIVINE. Richer than anything I've ever eaten. People were laughing at me because I was getting drunk on it. I'd just take a bite and stare unfocused into space as I sensed the complexity on different parts of my tongue, then resurface to find someone had been talking to me.

I almost got a half chub. It was that good.

Tell us more.

A 19 year old kid called for a cab. He tried to rob the guy, the cabbie resisted, so he shot and killed him (3 blocks from my house that is). He then proceeded to dump the body and park the cab 2 blocks from my house.

The police just followed the dispatchers record to the home the cab was called to and busted the guy.

The guy's evil, but not an evil genius.

I just hope my neighborhood's not going down the tubes . . not to mention this happened Christmas Eve Day.

Wow. I'll admit, I have not read through the entire Alan Moore canon, but after a conversation I had online, I think the man may be incapable of writing a comic without someone in it eventually getting raped. Yes, a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much. Think about it, Miracleman, V for Vendetta, From Hell, Watchmen, Tom Strong, LoEG, Top 10, Supreme, all of them had wieners going in places where they weren't supposed to. Makes you think, don't it?

"I See Monsters" was recommended to me, but it doesn't really float my boat. I like all the others quite a bit.

What are you folks doing for New Years? Any plans?

We are hosting a party for the neighborhood 'tweens, several of my brother and sister's friends, which will entail movies, videogames, board games, and music.

Well, to be fair to Mr. Moore, it was an attempted rape in Watchmen and V for Vendetta. Otherwise, yeah.

That's the thing though, in most of his stuff, there's not even any line reading. No mind rape or anything, but actual forced sexual encounters. Because I suppose you could say that Superman didn't really have any say in having sex with his fictional Kryptonian wife and therefor was raped, but it was all in his head. Unlike when that computer had him rape that girl.

I'm stuck behind "the box" (i.e. the cash register) and I have a series of pre-programmed questions and statements I must make.

I want to be on the sales floor (where I thought I was going to be where I started and learning cash just for being "a jump") where I can engage people in conversation about books and sell books and stuff.

It's really difficult to talk about books when you need to get the customer out in 10 seconds or less. I understand the whole "You tell them about a book and they go back into the store to get it and that ups the conversation rating blah blah blah" but doing that also lowers the UPT (Units Per Transaction) and the average sale.

I'm not one of those people who gets off by trying to trick people out of their money.

I've told the big boss this and until I become the perfect cashier I'm not allowed out of the cash line. If I wasn't covering the asses of like 3 people when I'm up there, I might have the chance to be perfect.

Huh. That's not how I've read it. I mean, being stripped naked, put in a cage as part of a freak show, and shown pictures of your naked, dying daughter certainly has a psycho-sexual element to it, but I never got that the Joker had literally raped Gordon.

But it has been a while since I've read it. It's not a very good story, especially given the standard that Moore sets with his other work.

Not being able to afford it all?

I mostly solved that problem by no longer buying anything new in single issues. There are the occasional lots on eBay, but mostly it's collected editions for me.

Besides, my comic book collection has reached critical mass as it is. If I never bought another comic of any kind, I'd still have enough to occupy what time I have available for reading comics for a couple of years. And then you can go back and reread the good stuff. Add in a DVD collection that is also at critical mass, books, cheap used videogames, and the biggest problem isn't not having the money, it's not having the time.

It's strange which items become collector's items. We were trying to put together a full set of Avenger's Assemble hardcovers for Will for Christmas, and found that volumes 1, 3, 4, and 5 are all readily available, but 2 is sold out everywhere and any new volume goes for quite a premium. The early Spider-Man Masterworks are easy to find, and the latest ones, but volume 5 goes for several hundred dollars on eBay new. Same with, I think, Fantastic Four volume 5.

Time is my issue too.

I think I'm going to stop myself from buying trades for a long time until I catch up on all I've bought that I haven't read. Ton of good-looking stuff that's been sitting on the shelf far too long.

If only I could do nothing but sit around and read.

But, alas, I also have to post.

Gilda Dent

What's also interesting with the comics publishing model is that it's the opposite of the prose model, or nearly so.

The prose model is to publish in hardcover first, then if it's a best seller, trade paperback, then finally mass market paperback to get those who just want the story and don't care about waiting or the aesthetics of the format.

The comic model starts with mass market, goes to trade afterwards, then hardcover if there's enough demand for it. Some titles are going direct to hardcover, but trade then hardcover has been the trend for some time.

The only similarity is that the collectors edition deluxe hardcovers almost always come last to take advantage of double dippers.

It makes sense, though. Basic economic theory dictates that when you have multiple formats, you release your content in the order that is most likely to get maximum sales from each format.

You know what? If I'm going to be up way past a reasonable bedtime--mom being out of class for winter break is spoiling me--I ought to use this time to actually read some comics.

What does one do with an annoying younger brother?

You just said that you have duct tape.

Damn CompUSA, and their going out of business sale.

I'm a bit annoyed about it as well. We ordered a printer through them for work and they got bought out the day before it arrived.

So it arrived in town and then they canceled the order. But they didn't bother to let us know about it until I called a few days later to ask what the hell was taking so long with the printer.

I wound up having to order another from somewhere else and rush ship it because my co-worker isn't a patient person and the budget crisis requiring our office to not spend any money for the first half of the year and then finally finding out that we had most of our budget left parts of our office a bit flush in cash. Not in ways that are especially useful (since there are restrictions on how to spend it), but it's better than not having it at all.

So the Wells Fargo automated system is down. Which means that we are getting every. Single. Call.

Most of whom hang up immediately upon hearing a human voice.

Apparently, they've been well-trained by customer service departments. Some are great, but a few that I deal with have the worst connections and I am constantly getting dropped out. One being the aforementioned CompUSA.

Me: "I would love to, sir, but I do not have enough information for you to be properly identified."
DJ: "Then you should ask me easier questions! I can't believe this is how Wells Fargo treats its customers!"
Me (about ready to blow my top, this had been going on for ten minutes): "I am not going to jeopardize my job and your financial security by revealing account information to you without following proper security procedures, sir, and no matter what you say that is not going to change."

Yep. Even with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, most of the violence occurs off screen, and of course in the slasher scene in Psycho, you see the knife and you see Janet Leigh, but you never actually see the knife in Janet Leigh. A friend of mine's son was asked not to bring his four-year-old son back to Bible School a few years ago. They (and I) switched churches shortly thereafter.

Heh, I wish, but it was some other crap... Waitress, some episodes of Mad men and the Into The Wild soundtrack.

So upon giving my VCR to a local charity I discovered I do not need tapes any more. Unfortunately this means giving up:

The Gift (Perry Farrell's Janes Addiction movie) its crap, but its kind of unique.
Run Lola Run
The Crow
SLC Punk
Wall Street
Primal Fear
L.A. Confidential
Groove
Donnie Brasco
Varsity Blues
Hard Boiled and The Killer
Swing Kids

These were the only tapes I have kept through about 3 moves so I apparently have some DVDs to purchase now.

Decisions . .decisions . . .

I'm sucked into the Naruto storyline . .

$189 for the complete manga first arc storyline (27 volumes) or $250 for the incomplete uncut anime collection.

Or maybe just giving up on the thing (dang this hobby is expensive).

There's 220 episodes of Naruto the original series and about 130 of those are manga translations. The rest is "filler" until Naruto: Shippuden begins. Shippuden is after about a 2.5 year time jump, which is explained in the manga. I don't know how well they do that in the anime because I've only see up to ep 118 now which is about book 22 I think. There's still 5 more books after that. Book 28 begins the Shippuden story. That comes out in March.
