Merry Christmas, all.

My sister and her husband are on their way to a shelter to feed the hungry. A good friend is stuck at O'Hare after his flight was cancelled yesterday. He has been there for over 6 hours now.

I got a new DVD player that plays DIVX (since my old was making odd noises and the boyfriend lost the remote) and I got the new Dragon for my High Elf Army. But I can't open the dragon box until I get all my Space Wolves, Immolator and Dwarves assembled and painted.

Oh crap, there's also the High Elf Mage and Champion and SW Wolf Priest. I keep forgetting those.

I have to decide if I'm actually going to use the dragon with my High Elves or some other race. I don't think Dwarves can use them. There's also the task of deciding if a plain ole Hero will ride him or an Archmage or regular Mage. There's also the task of deciding what type of dragon too. Sun, Moon or Star. They all have different powers and stats. Bloody hell.

Good thing though, the boyfriend has been working on the Baneblade for 2 hours and all he's been able to assemble is two sponsons. muahaha

Merry Christmas, fuckers!

Morna and I sat up giving each other gifts 'til the wee hours last night. Exchanging gifts on Christmas Eve is part of my Danish heritage. Morna gave me tons of great stuff including a fine bottle of tequila, some beautiful calendars, great books and a framed painting of hers. This morning we gave each other stockings in bed and drank bubbly and coffee with liquor in it. My family lives far away and Morna barely has one so we spoil the crap out of each other. We are having the traditional breakfast she grew up with which is lamb chops and Christmas potatoes, a baked creamy potato dish with bacon, green onions and green peppers mixed in. I'm wearing great new socks and murino wool undies. Sorry if that is too much information.

I hope you are all enjoying the day and that you gave good gifts as well as received them.

I love that Tot has school on Christmas. Suzannah and I helped out at the Open House for said school, then went into the city and had a quiet dinner (we were the only diners and the first customers all day). We then went down to Rockefeller Center to see the Tree and then I got to show Suzannah a surprise - a tiny animatronic village. I pass it every day on the way to work. The fact that it has a Starbucks kiosk next to it makes me think of her.

Then we sat at the pond in Central park and walked around after.

Best date we've had in a long time.

Hah! I've escaped the ass-kicking so far.

I just cracked open "Lamb" by Christopher Moore and its already made me giggle reading the first page. I'm going to like this.

Ooh, that's one of Kristen's favorites and I really enjoyed reading it.

I think Moonlight Mile was based on a true story.

Wasn't it was based on a Rolling Stones song?

Oh my goodness.

I'm just flipping through Monster Society of Evil, and haven't read it at all yet . . . but I have this urge to call someone at DC and tell them "Give this man an ongoing Shazam series right now. I'll even start buying the floppies for it if you do."

I'd love that. I don't think he's up for a monthly though, is he?

Making good progress on dinner.

Laptops are bad enough without half a bottle of champagne, but oh well.

Rec'd nifty books and some new bakeware.

Mostly logged on to see whether my Secret Santa recepient's gift had arrived and it looks like no so I feel bad. But at least it's en route. And we had a package delivered on Christmas Day (quite unexpectedly) a couple years ago, so you never know.

My folks are enjoying their new life in Portland for the most part, but they REALLY miss their hot tub.

Just to illustrate what kind of retirees they are, they both have shiny red Vespas. My stepfather bought his when they first got here (parking is impossible) and my mother got hers this morning. Big red bow and all. Some people were walking by as it was unveiled and they were tickled by the sight.

Yep, the 80's version anyway. Episodes are 160 points each, or about two bucks.

I looked it up on Amazon after he'd already spent all of his points to get half the episodes. The complete 1980's series is available on DVD for $25.

Definitely not going to mention this to Will. No need to tell him he wasted his gift foolishly.

No need for it to be a monthly. Do it like Ultimates, a series of mini-series with breaks in between, giving him time to get a few issues in the can so that they can all come out in reasonable time.

never too early to learn about being a smart consumer though... maybe?

I suppose. I just don't want to rain on his parade on Christmas for the purpose of teaching him a lesson. It's exactly the sort of thing my father would have done.

I am going to be warn him against trying to con his sister out of her points to get the rest, and I've taken note that he's a fan. Amazon has the boxed sets of the original series from 1963, and he does have a birthday coming up early in 2008, so he might get lucky then.

So I'm looking through some of my goodies. Absolute Versions of New Frontier, Hush, and The Long Halloween, and Monster Society of Evil.

The New Frontier, The Long Halloween, and Monster Society of Evil all have stylized artwork, but all different from each other. Hush has traditional looking superhero work, well done for that type of artwork, but I'm struck by how much more interesting the artwork is from Sale, Smith, and Cooke. Hush, just looking at the artwork, is pretty in a bland sort of way. Maybe it works for that story, but it just doesn't grab me the way the others do.

Pretty much all I do it text. The only reason I get smartphones or whatever they're called is because they give me a QWERTY, which is a must. I've got a Dash now, but I never use the email or internet or any of that crap.

I had the Dash for a day. Hated it. I need a touchscreen to live.

You know every time I eat lasagna I think of you..

Is that wrong or what? And I am not saying how I am thinking of you. ;)

It's wrong, but in the right way.

I love the Voyager by LG, but I think that's Verizon only.

I used to like to make a wooosh noise when i was running to pretend I was the Flash. Here's how much of a loser I was/am: I wasn't even Flash. I was Quicksilver/Max Mercury. Apparently I wasn't good enough for the C-list like Johnny Fucking Quick.

Centro is basically a smaller form-factor Treo 755p with a different keyboard. Good phone and great price for the feature set.

The Mogul seems very popular, and for those who don't need touchscreens the Q is sexy.

I really like the HTC Touch.
Touch, Q, and Mogul are a bit too rich for my blood. I'm pretty wide open on features, as long as it does more than make phone calls. Basically, I want a toy.

I stopped in a Verizon store Saturday and nothing really blew my skirt up. I'd wanted to take a look at that Samsung Juke, and I wasn't impressed by it at all. I'd wanted one of the Sony Ericsson phones from AT&T, but they feel like they're made of cheapo Transformers plastic.

...

A Transformers cell phone that really worked would be totally awesome.

I was listening to NPR yesterday, and they had a piece on cell phones and electronic entertainment in India. According to the story, cell phones have become the dominant form of music delivery in India, far surpassing internet downloads, mostly due to availability. There are 200 million cell phones in use, and only a small fraction of that number has any form of reliable online connection. As a result, cell phones are becoming the preferred way to access internet content, with many users bypassing home computers altogether, and are starting to do the same in most other areas of electronic entertainment.

A couple years ago I read an article that said that in many developing countries in (I think) South America landlines were almost completely bypassed in favor of wireless. It also said that cell phones were such a status symbol that people who didn't have one got fakes made out of wood to "use" while they were driving.

Oh, OK. I just found out it's where they filmed The Goonies. I loved the whole look of the town.

I'd like to know what you thought about Stardust and Eastern Promises

Thanks.

Stardust. I really liked this movie. Probably moved into my top ten of 2007, because it was much, much more than I thought it would be. Besides the fact that I'm a sucker for Neil Gaiman, it reminded me a lot of "The Princess Bride," which is to say it was a satisfying fairy tale and never tried to present more than that. Plus, gay sky pirates ? Sold.

Eastern Promises. I loves me some David Cronenberg, so I had more fanboy due deference than I would ordinarily, considering the subject matter (which hits a lot closer to home than I would like). These are not nice Russians. Good character work across the board -- Naomi Watts is always good, Armin Mueller-Stahl is prototypical Russian, smiling and charming as he cuts your throat. Vincent Cassels seems a bit miscast and out of place, but I really can't argue with Viggo Mortensen's portrayal. Although in one part you see a lot more of Aragorn's Little Strider than I ever would have expected.... It's a lot more mainstream than most of Cronenberg's earlier work, but in terms of narrative, it's an appreciated move. But, Cronenberg has always dealt with the body in violent, visceral ways, and this movie is no different...there are a few scenes not for the squeamish. Again, this movie was disturbing for me because of my close relationship with Russians for nearly a decade. I've always found, in my personal experience, that there have been two competing aspects in Russian society, corruption and moral ambiguity. It's why scruples always seem to be a moving target for Russians and more predicated on situation than principle. It's a survival instinct, really. This movie really captures that. I recommend highly.

Hmmm.....you're right, it IS a love-hate thing in my experience.

I know mostly ex-pats, and most of them are glad to be gone, because the weather and culture can oppressive. They're not as political as Western Europeans or Americans in talking about their own government, and tend to focus more on the creative and spiritual than realpolitik.

But corner a Russian, and there's a sense of nationalism that's probably more deep-seeded and pervasive than the blind patriotism superficially exhibited by many Americans. The culture is thousands of years old, and the country has been invaded numerous times from both the West and the East, from Genghis Khan to Napoleon to Hitler, so with that much turbulent history, the ties bind deep, and again, burrow in farther than simple politics and cultural benchmarks. Russians may hate each other, but they'll close ranks in defending their country's culture and heritage if some "ill-bred" American takes shots.

So Eastern Promises is finally on DVD? Excellent.

We're hoping to catch "There Will Be Blood" and later "Walk Hard"(a friend and I; Sarah isn't interested). Dunno when the former will hit our area.

We got saddled watching AVP: Requiem last night. Just as lousy as you'd expect.

Right. Although the question might be asked as to whether Nabokov, Bely, Solzehesityn, Bulgakov, et al., would have been as influential or as powerful in their writing WITHOUT Stalin.

Again, looking at the last thousand years or so of Russian rule, you could argue that it's proof that nature abhors a vacuum (in this case a political one), so the situation allowing for/requiring a totalitarian despot seems ready-made.

Hey, trickster! Long time, no see. How go things in the wonderful world of herpetology?

As to Stalin, yup, he's pretty close to Satan. I think his body count was near the 20 million mark, which even Mao and Hitler couldn't match. Although during World War II, we (America and the USSR) were buddies, due to Hitler's wild ride through Western Europe. The biggest mass-murderer in history, but we didn't seem to have problems sitting down to borscht and vodka at Yalta. Alas, the enemy of my enemy is my friend....

Hey, trickster! Long time, no see. How go things in the wonderful world of herpetology?

All is going well. :) I am already setting up some Reptile Educational shows with some boy scout troupes this spring. Its really nice when you can do something else with you hobby to educate people.

I am not sure if I made mention of this last time I posted. We did a show in October where an Elderly African woman was looking at the animals.

She was extremely terrified of our Burmese python and would not touch it. In her native home land, snakes tend to be really deadly. She watched the children touch the snake and with me talking to her (her daughter translated for me) we got her to touch the snake. It was a remarkable thing. Most of these large snakes are considered dangerous (and they are) but I got her to over come her natural fear of this animal.

Here is another picture of our girl.

Some people (http://secretsun.blogspot.com/2007/12/worst-time-of-year.html) shouldn't be allowed to write.
It's my belief that a lot of this fertility symbolism comes from the north and emerged full force during the Ice Age. It's obvious to any thinking person that the Sun is the author of all life on this planet. But it's easy to overlook it, particularly in the modern age of oil heat and electric light. It seems reasonable to me that the cold snap forced a lot of people south and they brought their Solar piety with them. Those long, cold, dark winters would make the return of the Sun's strength in the Spring and Summer of the absolute utmost concern to those people. I can't imagine this type of religion emerging in the desert, where Mother Nature is seen as someone else's whore and the Sun is your most bitter enemy.
And yes, I'm harping (http://secretsun.blogspot.com/2007/12/so-anyway.html). Don't come into my house and get haughty at me for not buying your supposed proactive paradigm-shifting bullshit, especially when you wouldn't know a fully formed thought if it something something something.
