Holy crap that's a lot of Nintendo DS's sold.
Also of note is how much the 360 version of Assassin's Creed outsold the PS3 version. To be expected, I suppose.
A healthy showing for Mass Effect as well. Not fantastic, mind, but healthy.
And to all of those who were afraid Mario Galaxy woudn't sell? Nyah-nyah!
Apparently Nintendo are thinking of pulling their DS television ads over here because there just aren't enough units to meet the demand they're creating.

No surprise really. The Nintendo DS is almost always if not always the top selling unit each month. That is a ton of DS's sold though. Pretty amazing that it has been out for the time it has and it's still selling so well.

A lot of places had specials on the DS bundles on Black Friday, that probably helped quite a bit. But it generally outperforms all the other systems anyway.
What's interesting to me is that despite the DS selling so much hardware, it's pretty rare to see a DS game crack the top 10.
Remeber, halfway through the gamecubes lifespan, where people were rumbling about nintendo maybe going software only and dropped out of the console market.Allmost 3 million pieces of hardware in one month, and i don't own either.
Anyone know if these ps3 sales were after the price change?

All those units sold, yet not a single game on the top 10?

Yeah, they were

Kindof ironic, isn't it?
Cool numbers. I'll admit, I picked up a DS this past Nov :)
Of the games listed, I only picked up Mass Effect so far. Orange Box was played ALOT before Mass Effect was out, so I haven't needed to pick up anything else. I really want CoD4 for PC, but I can't help but think I only have room for 1 FPS at a time, and that has to be TF2.

Yeah, I would think that if a lot of those DS were "bundles" that the games that were included in those bundles would have at least cracked the bottom half (Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and NintenDogs Somethingorother).
But I think it's more a sign of what kind of people buy a DS...a ton of casual gamers. A lot of people buy a DS and a couple games for it when they first get it...and then rarely, if ever, buy games for it again.
Then factor in that the "hardcore" gamers that buy a DS are usually spending their money on console and PC games over portable games, and I guess it's not so hard to see.

my personal opinion about lack of top ten DS titles: too many good games. I have 31 of 'em, all pretty damn good

Close enough. It's the same reason PS2 titles almost never crack the top 10 for the last year, even though total PS2 software sales close to equals total software sales for nextgen consoles combined. The difference being that PS2 software sales are decreasing YOY and DS are increasing.

I know about 4 people with a DS...all have Brain Training.
2 of those have only ever had Brain Training. One of them has had it for over a year.
There are alot of type of game that don't sell on the DS, fun easy games like the Brain games do though.

Exactly my girlfriend's dad. He played Brain Age on his son's DS, but then couldn't when it went to college with him. So he went out and bought himself a DS and his own copy of Brain Age. I doubt he'll ever by anything other than another sequel.
And yeah, wow, those numbers are insane.

PS2 titles aren't flooding the Top 10 charts anymore because PS2 game development is slowing down. The last major game it had was, what...GoW2?
Has nothing to do with there being too many good games, that doesn't even make sense. Too many good games on "X" system, so they buy games on "Y" system instead?

Interestingly enough, this report from the Nielsen Company indicates that even though Nintendo systems are having brisk sales, the console that is still played the most is the PS2. Even though this report doesn't mention handhelds, it still may have something to do with the lack of top 10 titles.
http://psp.ign.com/articles/841/841183p1.html
The Nielsen Company has released several top ten lists for 2007 that reveal a variety of consumer trends related to media and technology. Among them is Videogame Console Usage from April to November that shows the PlayStation 2 is still enjoying the most use among consoles.
Nielsen measured the total amount of minutes its participants spent playing videogames, then divided those minutes between all current- and last-gen consoles. The PS2 obliterated the competition, claiming over 42 percent of all usage time. For each of the big three platforms, their last-gen predecessors saw more use than current systems. Here's how each console ranked:
Videogame Console Usage (April-November 2007)
1. PS2 – 42.2% of usage minutes
2. Xbox – 13.9
3. Xbox 360 – 11.8
4. GameCube – 7.1
5. Wii – 5.5
6. PS3 – 2.5
7. Other – 17.1
"Other" consists of any other console found in the home.
The data suggests that while the Wii has seen brisk sales this year, many of its purchasers don't play the console as often as those who bought a 360. It is also interesting to note the "other" category saw more use than the PS3, Wii, and GameCube combined.

Okay. I'll explain this explicitly since you missed the point and/or I wasn't clear enough. Individual PS2 title sales have rarely rated in the top 10 in the last year(The why on that is completely irrelevant to the point), yet total PS2 software sales for the last year is nearly equal to PS3/Wii/360 combined(So PS2 aggregate software sales is still quite high). That is similar to the DS. No individual DS title charts, but as a whole DS moves a significant amount of software. Better?

No it's "There's so many titles out for X platform and owners of X platform only spend so many dollars so the money is spread between a larger base of titles."
Edit: Nintendo reported 123.55 million titles sold between Apr 06 and Mar 07. And the DS's YoY sales have been increasing which means they'll probably have sold more than that for this fiscal year.

Bingo. There's at least two things that can support this conslusion:
1) Overall software sales. The DS, PS2 and PC have generally been at the forefront in total software sales. So DS owners are obviously buying games.
2) Diversity of games. The DS has a much larger library than any of the other next gen consoles. More choices=greater opportunity for distribution.
You could even analyze a third--the diversity of DS owners. I don't know if there are demographics to support it, but I'd estimate the DS has the most diverse gamer base.

no, it just means that with a massive library of games people are going to make choices because not everyone can afford buying ALL the good games currently out for the DS

What's interesting to me is that despite the DS selling so much hardware, it's pretty rare to see a DS game crack the top 10.it *might* be because of the vast variety for the DS.so the buyers might be spread a little thin.me my self i have TONS of DS games. some i haven't even opened yet, let alone played.like wise with my 9 younger siblings.(thats ALOT of DS titles right there :p)

Nintendo is still the champion of the hand held, and will be for some time. Also, COD4 surprised me that it is selling that much within a month, and Assasins Creeed almost hitting 1 million in total copies sold.

In Europe (or UK) PS2 titles regulary feature in the top 10. When a game comes out that is on all formats (FIFA08 being an example) PS2 always is the highest selling version.
But remember, just having new games sold means little when in comparison to console useage. If 42% of USAians use their PS2, they might be playing the games they already own or are buying 2nd hand games which probably don't feature on game sales statistics.
PS2, while not the biggest selling console is still the most popular.

1 or 2 titles every few months. The PS2 does not dominate the Top 10 in any region. But it does still dominate total new software sales, it's changing as sales dwindle, but the Fiscal year, the PS2 will have move more software than any of the home consoles by a landside.

Again, the PS2 still sells the most software. Also new games sold means a lot more than console usage.
