NOVA #9 - Spoilers & Discussion

NOVA #9, out today, by Abnett, Lanning, and Alves . . .

So we pick up from last issue, with Nova and his psychic Russian space-dog pal Cosmo alone in Knowhere, a Celestial's severed head floating towards the end of the universe, fighting zombie alien superheroes.

Incidentally, that sentence right there is almost everything I love about comics.

Anyway, Nova and Cosmo manage to hold off the zombie Luminals long enough for Rich to use his Transmode infection to seal the evil zombie creator back in its cage. Threat over, Cosmo restores the people of Knowhere and uses the city's technology to send Nova on to the Technarchy's homeworld. Hot on his heels, however, are Phalanx Selects Gamora and Drax.

All in all, there's some good action, fun dialogue, and a general sense of crazy sci-fi fun.

Also: "Whooo-Hooo! Rocket Style!"

didn't like it to much. The Abyss entity was defeated to quickly and wouldn't it become a select like Drax and Gamora. Also what was that cortex thing that Gamora got at the end of the issue?


The phalanx virus in Nova is getting a little old to. You'd think in a community full of scientists someone would be able to help Rich. Hopefully he'll get rid of it in the next 2 issues

So is Nova cured now?Nope, he's worse off than before. Lessening Worldmind's buffers, only a little bit and only for a minute, has made the TM virus even harder to control.

... and wouldn't it become a select like Drax and Gamora. Also what was that cortex thing that Gamora got at the end of the issue?Nova didn't use the TM virus to infect Abyss. He used it to re-seal Abyss's prison.

As for the bracelet thing, that was the same type of Passport gadget Cosmo gave Nova earlier, which lets him (and now her and Drax) use the Continuum Cortex teleportation system.

Ok i've got a question about the whole Gamora/Nova relationship. Does Gamore generally care about Rich or is she all about the sex. She seemed to turn on him rather quickly after he thew of the selection process. Personally i'm not a fan of the relationship, i hope Rich informs Gamora next issue that she was just a booty call to him.

Well I'll reserve comment about Nova 9 till the weekend when I get the issue proper but thanks for the pre-look ED. Now Gamora and Rich; timely you ask this question cause I have a poll at my Nova blog which poses the very question: Nova and Gamora: Hot or Not? Couple, Friends or Bitter Enemies? So far after 4 days, it's 4 votes each for Friends and Enemies and 1 vote for not being a couple. I posed this question as in my Nova fics I want to establish once and for all where Rich and Gamora lie (pun intended)! Does Rich care for the deadlist woman in the galaxy? Well yes, sort of. I think their relationship was more for mutual benefit; they became close during Annihilation (well sometime between the end of Annihilation Nova 4 and Annihilation 1 while Rich was setting up the United Front) but more out of need for sex than actual love; not in the way that Rich, say for arguement, loved Namorita during his New Warriors days.
From Gamora's perspective Rich is a "plaything"; a distraction, maybe due to her "break-up, or whatever" that happened between herself and Adam Warlock. But would I say she cares for him? Personally I think No. Besides I think he deserves a more loving relationship in the long term.
Of course now that Adam is back, I'm looking forward to what will happen as/when Warlock finds out Nova's been *&^% his ex! As is Nova 10 will explore the whole Gamora/Nova relationship under the spotlight, so we'll all find out next issue.

This issue was awesome. My favorite scene would have to be the one where Nova is flying with Cosmos tongue hanging out. This book is so good in so many ways.

You hit the nail on the head. I hope they don't continue what ever relationship they have/had nor do i want them to go through the whole femme fatale Batman/Catwoman thing. Rich has got bigger things to worry about and he seems to be to much of an old school hero to stand for some of Gamoras more murderous tendencies.

Another fun issue. I'm glad someone is finally going back to the source of the transmode virus.

Looking forward to the Gamora-Rich reunion. I hope those two crazy kids can make it work. The marverl universe needs more regularly appearing scantily clad green chicks.

Wow, they resolved that a lot quicker than I thought, but the prospects of Nova heading to the home of the Technarchs is pretty damn cool.

Cosmo is one of the new favorite characters.

Also, given the introduction of the Celestial's head as a nexus point, I was thinking that Knowhere would be a great base of operations for a new Nova Corps. It's not easy to access (unless you're on the inside already and have some of that cool portal tech), but provides access to pretty much anywhere in the universe.

Downside? Might drop into the end of all creation with little (if any) notice, but hey, them's the risks.

Hope Nova's wristband portal isn't just a one-way deal, and Knowhere gets a lot more usage in the title.

It was a fun issue, but after the excellent build up from the previous issue I couldn't help feeling like it didn't live up to it. =/
Nova 10 should be exciting though.

I agree that it was wrapped up pretty quick. I expected one more issue. Still, it was good.

I'm not a fan of the cosmic and I'm really enjoying the stuff DnA are doing with Nova. It's just so fun and wacky. Cosmo is awesome. If Marvel does a third Annihilation he should get his own mini.

Would have been nice if they actually showed Abyss...cause I was thinking either Count Abyss, Abyss from AoA, or Abyss from MvC2. :p

Overall pretty decent...so far living up to the "best ongoing of the year" as advertised on the cover!

I thought it was a great issue the art and story were spot on. I think we haven't see the last of Knowhere or the last of Abyss I think this is just a set up for something down the road.

I think cosmo is a good character but it reminds me a lil bit to much of Men in Black and the dog that recently appeared in the Mystery in Space with Captain Comet. But I enjoyed it none the less.

Cosmo be here, present and correct to thought-speak view of Nova 9. Nova 9 is very good comic! How you say? The bees' knees! Of course have to be fair that Nova also Good Guy cause Comarade bought me a rubber bone toy from market! Things at Knowhere have been bad! Real bad since Luminals dropped off black box with bad guy inside. Abyss is name; pity Cosmo and Comrade Nova do not know what is inside box but considering zombies walking around Knowhere and causing all £$£"! maybe Cosmo do not want to know what's inside box. As Cosmo said to Comrade Nova; saw Linda Blair film and crapped behind sofa! Truly bad thing! Masters we're happy too so Cosmo hid them in my collar for safe keeping! Clever da! Cosmo is very worried for Comrade Nova's health; he be infected by transmode virus from Phalanx..$%%£ off-spring from almight Technarchy. Nova used transmode virus to keep Abyss inside box, which keeped him in check. But not good thing! First off Cosmo knows now that Comrade Nova is now even more worried about going bad himself. Cosmo heard him screaming in sleep last night while Cosmo slept in doggie basket with new toy for company.. He is Good Guy! He needs to sort out problem fast! So to help, have sent him to Kvch to find out all about Technarchy. Maybe he can find way to cure himself of the virus but is difficult thing da? But also worried becaue beautiful green girl with big bazomas and big green guy with tattos went after him! They're bad people; killed a lot of staff in Continuum Cortex chamber! Cosmo have very bad feeling about this! Also Cosmo comment that artist Alves made me and Nova look real good! And love that Cosmo work well with two good writers Comrades Abnett and Lanning! Cosmo hopes to meet Comrade Nova soon. Maybe join Nova Corps as mascot or Chief of Security! Could work from Knowhere till it falls of edge of Universe; that be a while away but for now Cosmo keep eyes on Abyss and make sure he stays inside big box thing but have dread feeling Abyss is going to get out! Hope Comrade Nova comes back! Cosmo want to go flying again! Whoo Hooo! Rocket Style! Spaciba!
