When I was first introduced to you it was through the Black Canary mini, which was really well written and in context with how she had been written before hand, keeping true to the ways the character(s) were written before you got a hold of them, you were excellent. I was hoping to see great things from you. Plus you had the really good and excellent Paulo Sequeira drawing for you.

Then You on to supergirl but instead of keeping true or close to how she had been written in the earlier issues you go in a more fluffy, family friendly, lovey dovey direction(which is weird considering how close your were with Canary's treatment by Gail.) and are stuck with 3 tie in issues. Both on those things completely hindering my enjoyment on your writing the title. Not to mention an artist whom we definately disagree on. I definately would have preferred Paula following you to this than whom you got.

though I thought that Churchill was best to date on the title and that Drew Johnson might bring her back to that, but it doesn't seem like it. Barrows whose on the titans is up there and would probably serve really well drawing supergirl on her solo book,I think he is the best I have seen since churchill.

Plus with the new origin it looks like she has lost the darkness/edge forever which means no more originality, no more gritty, fun entertaining stories and more fluffy and superman in a skirtish, boring, bland, goody too shoes candy cane and lollipops girl to come.

Then You go on to supposedly get outsiders and instead of working with a team like the one we had we throw in so many random people and people who I really didn't care about like Jonn/Catwoman/Aquaman leaving only really Grace left on the on field team. I really was digging it when we had Thunder/Grace and Boomer post OYL and greats like Shift, Indigo, Starfire, Arsenal, Jade, Thunder and Grace pre OYL.

Then you got the boot which I kinda feel bad about even if I wasn't going to pick up the title. Then Dixon whom I like too goes and completely destroys thunder even more and throws people I care even less about like Ollie and CCain on the team instead of Jonn/Catwoman. The art isn't that special either so I still won't be picking it up and probably won't until batman leaves and we get a team that actually looks like the outsiders not bats friends from the past and a few other random people.

Then You go and do 3 Birds of Prey Fill in issues, the first being a okay story that had okay art, but then you follow it up with Nerds of Prey which Story wise was spot on with all the characters and the writing was amazing, the art was really, really, really good too. Then you follow it up by taking a character that before and still I don't give a crap about giving her a one shot and making me enjoy it with again really good writing and portrayal as well as another good fill in artist for Nicola.

What I don't get is how I think you really are a pretty darn good writer, but you seem to be bi-polar in how you choose to portray characters compared to past written, Canary well, Supergirl not so much(IMO), and then with 111,112 spot on with every character yet again. I don't get how you can be so good, but then do things that make me not like some of your work. I don't get how your not writing a book of your own yet and I have a feeling you might leave dc soon if you don't get one which would be a big loss for them.

Though I have to say you probably do better with established females who are in larger casts than with solo people or more male generated teams from what I have seen.

P.S. Theres not reason for this post other then I felt like I needed to say some of this stuff.

Thanks, Johnny, I love hearing from you.

I do think DC will give me something regular. We're working up something right now. But until it hits the stands, I'll not go into further detail.

The Outsiders thing was unusual, and I don't think it'll happen like that again, but it was probably for the best.

I should point out that some of your perception of both the Outsiders and Supergirl are heavily influenced by the point at which you got to know those characters. You don't seem to care for Batman on the Outsider, but to a whole generation of readers, the Outsiders are the team Batman founded. You don't like Supergirl as a straight-up heroine, but as more of a bad girl, which flies in the face of decades of Supergirl characterization. So this might account for why some of my approaches seem bi-polar to you. We disagree on the basic premise of certain teams and characters. That's not to say either one of us is wrong. Good characters often accommodate more than one approach. Garth Ennis wrote an excellent funny Punisher run and an excellent dark Punisher run. One may seem more "valid" than the other, depending on who you are, but they're both outstanding work.

Of course, I'm no Garth Ennis, so the more likely explanation is that I just miss the target half the time.

But I stayed as true as I could to Gail's Canary because if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And I went a different way with Kara because I really, really don't think she should be "dark."

Keep posting, Johnny, it's always a pleasure!

1. Thanks

2. Thats the thing I really don't think character wise supergirl needed fixing or was broke. I think her stories needed clear endings, her origin needed to be cleared up and she needed a rogues gallery and those were what brought the title down, not her character.

3. With the Dark thing is definately we disagree a lot. See I've tried in the past to read different supergirl runs, all the previous ones I came in contact to were boring and not really enjoyable and I really didn't get connected or care about the character with the way it was written. Then Loeb/Churchill came along and I found a supergirl that I thought was actually likable, a good character and had enjoyable circumstances around her. This run up to issue 17 was the best supergirl run and only really enjoyable one to date IMHO.

I not saying she cannot be a heavy Hero she just doesn't have to be fluffy and cheery about it all the time, go patrolling, and act like a superman clone in a skirt rather than her own self.
