I don't have a Wii, PS3, or 360 (so in otherwords, I'm missing out) but my friends do. I've seen them purchase older games using the online system built in the consoles and buy extras to the games with 360.
But what happens to your purchased games and DLC when the NEXT gen. consoles come out? Will you still have your bought games on the new PS4, or Xbox 720? I'm sure it's too early to ask or even think about it, but we all know companies are getting ready for the next gen systems.
Or what happens if your current console breaks? Do you have to purchase everything all over again? Or is it sent and saved to your account and you just have to log in with your account and it will be there?

Don't know about PS3, but with the 360, anything you BUY will be downloadable for free again. If your console dies, you can still get a new box and download the games to it since you own them.
Down the road though. I'm not sure what happens with the next versions of the consoles. I assume that there will be a way to download them again onto the new console. Hopefully without paying again, but I don't think we'll know for sure how the different companies will handle last gen content on the next gen consoles.

It's the same on the PS3.

So they are purchased through an "account" and you just have to login with them?
And another question,
Does this mean that if Friend A bought DLC for Halo3 for his Xbox, that he could go login to Friend B's 360 and "re purchase" the DLC for free and then they would both have it?

On PS3 when someone buys one of the games they can share it with four or five other accounts. I would assume DLC is the same. At least that's how it used to be. I know that Warhawk doesn't allow sharing, so they may have changed all of it.
