Other than eBay, does anyone have advice/links/reccomendations?

Anything made after the late '80s, the cels were created for sale and were never used in the films at all. As such, they have no real value apart from being "limited editions."

I'm looking more for Superfriends and Shazam, which seems to be more likely to find the real deal for.

Indeed. Some nice Toth work there.

*Hey, PBM--do you mean Kazam? Shazam was only live-action, as far as I know. Mac--I'll have to play 'resident Alex Toth scholar by proxy', and say that Toth never did the actual cels for anything after about 1964 (even then--they were 'mattes' for segways), only the character/head sheets. --Jocular Jim

Nope, there was animated Shazam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HnkficIc1Y).

And Toth certainly did do the model sheets, if not the cels, that they used for most of Superfriends' run.

That might be true of films (but I kind of doubt it) but it's not true for tv shows.

I was in a hurry earlier--I left out that he often (but not always) did the storyboards--from which the 'key' cels are drawn, throughout his run at Hanna-Barbera in the sixties and early seventies. One can only assume he did the same for later work, although there was an imitator who's name I'm blanking on now.

I never paid much attention to the Super Friends stuff, so thanks fer teaching me something new, PBM! What year are they from--'cause I was only into that series for about ten minutes, around the time I was 12 and 13 (original run)--never watched the later ones...

Problem is with cels, you can never tell absolute authenticity without some sort of provenance. Any artist with skill and knowledge of material could fake the work, easily.
Me, for one. :D

I enthusiastically recommend Van Eaton Galleries, right here in Sherman Oaks, California:

http://www.vegalleries.com/old_site/index.html

I've bought a lot of stuff from these folks and have gotten some great deals. The store carries an incredibly wide variety of studios and projects. I'm SURE they'll have cels from the shows you seek. The store buys a lot of material directly from animation artists (including myself); they also have a lot of cool animation maquettes/statuary and cartoon-related books you'll dig. They've also got some amazing Dr. Seuss material.

If you contact 'em, please be sure to mention that I sent you. They'll treat you right.

Aloha,

Scott!

I've got original cels from He-Man, Star Wars:Droids, and the 90's X-Men cartoon.
My grail is a G1 Transformers cel, but I can't find any that aren't ridiculously expensive.
