All-New Atom #20 is Gail's (and Mike's) last issue. #21 features the debut of the new creative team of Rick Remender and Pat Oliffe.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I mean, I love Pat's art and Rick's Fear Agent has been awesome, but I don't know...

Gail and Mike have barely gotten warmed up on this book. :( This blows. Well, not entirely. It's fuckin' awesome that Rick's getting a shot at a big publisher like DC, and I'm sure he can keep the book the ton of fun it has been, but it'll be a might big task trying to replace Gail.

This is no good. This is no good!

Nothing against Remender and Oliffe, whose work I am not familiar with.. but they'll really have to impress me to keep me buying this title.

Olliffe is best known for SPIDER-GIRL, as well as Busiek's UNTOLD TALES OF SPIDER-MAN. And some great art in 52 and the current FOUR HORSEMEN mini.

Remender writes a lot of Image and indy stuff. SEA OF RED and FEAR AGENT being the biggies. And STRANGE GIRL.

Sad to see Gail and Mike go, but that's an impressive team to take over the reigns.

To be honest, I don't mind that much. I like the character and Gail's done good work but I think there are other projects that could better occupy Gail's time. Plus I think Mike Norton deserves to be showcased on a book with a higher profile.

#20 = my last issue.

I'm not a Pat Olliffe fan at all.

And in reading this news, that just made my day right straight to hell.

I would love to see Mike working on Justice League.

Also, how's Strange Girl, if anyone else here has read it?

I'm just guessing that Gail's off the book because she has the opportunity to do something that's an even better opportunity, so I see it as more of a positive thing.

Or maybe, hopefully, amazingly, bi-weekly Wonder Woman?

Reality is going to have a hard enough time coping with the concept of a Wonder Woman title that actually ships monthly. :p

Good point, I guess it was a tall order.

So is WW the only thing Gail's writing now?

Maybe eventually she'll be allowed to announce one of these big exciting fantastic projects she's been hinting about. Although I would like DC (in general, not Gail or anyone else personally) to stop teasing and hyping things SO far in advance. It's hard -- for me, at least -- to sustain excitement about something for twenty-leven years between the time it's announced and the time it actually appears (Gail on Wonder Woman).

Now I'm sad. And I'm at work, so I don't even have access to ice cream, peppermit bark, or hot chocolate to cheer me up.

BTW: I've not read any of Remender's stuff. Oliffe is servicable most of the time if not extraordinary so I'm okay with the art side of things but Remender makes me a little edgy... someone PLEASE tell me he knows how to bring the funny. The funny is what keeps me buying this title.

I'll give the new team one arc to sell me. If it doesn't I'm gone.

When is this 'Huge' and 'Large' returning-something-to-the-DCU-that's-Been-Gone-A-Long-Time project you're working on gonna be announced, Gail?

I was hoping Mike and Gail would go to at least issue 50.
So what's next for you both?

It's really damn good, and I've only had the chance to read the first trade. The next two trades are on my Amazon wish list.

No offense to Gail or Mike, but I have fallen in love with Rick Remender's work lately and would buy pretty much anything with his name on it. Atom is perfect for him. His work is all about off-beat stories that can play it straight and insane at the same time. XXXombies, a story of a zombie attack in the 1970s and involving porn superstars, came out at the end of October as part of Remender and Kieron Dwyer's new continuing horror anthology series, Crawl Space. If you want to know what kind of weird and funny comics he can do, pick that one up. You want crazy superhero work, give The End League (http://www.rickremender.com/new/index.php?subaction=showcomments&id=1189722252&archive=&start_from=&ucat=2&) a shot when it comes out at the end of December.

Bad news for Gail Simone-written and Mike Norton-drawn Atom fans, but good news for everyone who sticks around to see Rick Remender very likely spin some great stories. I'm sure Pat Oliffe will do well too.

Rick is a fantastic writer.
He's an idea guy that writes fun and exciting books. Fear Agent is one of the best books on the shelves.

That said, I'm really sad that Atom is changing creative teams. I don't feel like the book has been given a chance to find it's groove. Between the artist changes and the crossovers it's gone through everything that can hurt a new series. It was also nice to see Mike on a regular series.

I'll stay with it because of Rick, but I'm a little worried about the long term health of a sereis that can't get out of 2nd gear.

It's been over a week, but I do have to ask-

Gail, are you at liberty to say why you're not going to be on the book anymore? Are you leaving to embark on some as-yet unannounced project?

I'm going to give the new team a fair shot- I want this title to succeed, or at least hold out for as long as possible- but I am curious.

Thanks in advance.

I absolutely agree, which is why I've been a bit mum. But good news IS coming!

ZOMG!!!!

All Star Joshinator is just what I've been waiting for!!! And Picasso?! Boo-ya! I mean, I'm not always sure of that guy's lines, and such, but his art is always interesting to look at.

This is gonna rock!

Originally it was going to be out three times a week, but Dan Didio crushed that plan because he is mean and unreasonable!

Gail's popularity was helping the title and how well the character stands on his own. I suspect it will hemmorage about 3000 readers and then die. I'll stick around for 1 arc to see if it is still fun but I have my doubts.

There are some writers that bring a unique tone to their work that just cannot be copied such as Gail Simone and Dan Slott. If the character(s) are strong enough a new writing team can change the tone and approach to their own and it can continue but if the title is inherently weak (and let's face it New Atom does not have a strong fan base just on its own) it will die.

For recent examples of this , we have Aquaman and Firestorm. Oh well sometimes for a tree to go strong weaker branches must be pruned.

If I were DC, I'd put Gail on Blue Beetle.

Its been a promising title that could really break out with the right touch. While its been excellent for most of its current run, I think the creative team has been messed with a few times.

Hmm. Or maybe a team book.

Of course, at all costs her run on Wonder Woman must not be interfered with. She's saving the franchise.
