....I was talking with mine about femme identification, and she asked me who my 'femme role model' was.
THAT is a damned good question. Nerd that I am, Lynda Carter would have to be one..... and really, considering the stealth way I had to get my 'femme identification fix' as a child, it's really not THAT surprising. But I don't have a whole bunch of people who come readily to mind.
Is this weird? Thoughts?

I think Lynda Carter is an excellent choice. Of course people will always think about her as Wonder Woman, but take a look at her "today". She's aged gracefully and is definitely a woman I would classify as SEXY & CLASSY.
One great example of that is her role in Sky High:

Are we talking about as very young children, or later in life? And here's another question for you, did it change at different stages? Because it seems likely that it would change, depending on your age. I had a good think on this one, and came up with an interesting list that I'm going to pick apart for the next hour while I'm on the desk. :)
Max, you should share these questions with us more often. It's like we're getting therapy by proxy. :D

**chuckles** Well, the thing about we transsexuals (or many of us), is we tend to get sort of 'frozen' in the time when we were a child, and we first started to bear the burden of repression. That's why you see so many adult transwomen wearing styles from decades past. Our development, in a way, gets stuck at a certain point, and then we have to come back when we're ready or able as adults to nurture that child who never got to grow and develop in the typical fashion.
So I guess I learned to 'repress' myself when Lynda was deflecting bullets with her bracelets.
Also, at the time, growing up, 'femme' was sort of denigrated by the second-wave feminists about me as equalling weakness, so that it's really taken me THIS long, even post-transition, to get to where I feel safe and comfortable immersing myself in femme expression.
....okay, that was theraputic, who do I send the check to?

What about Princess Leia?
I mean, it was the 1970's and here's a PRINCESS (and what little girl didn't want to be a princess?) who, instead of waiting in her tower for a rescue grabbed a gun and helped out. With lines like
"This is some rescue! When you came in didn't you have a plan for getting out?"
"Into the garbage shute flyboy!"
"I don't know who you are or where you came from but from now on you do as I tell you, okay?"
Han: "Look, I take orders from just one person - me."
Leia: "It's a wonder you're still alive.... Will someone get this walking carpet out of my way?"
Princess Leia was pretty but also a tough chick who could stand up for herself and fight for herself when the time came for it.

I had to think long and hard on this, and I came up with... zero. Except for my mum. I've had very strong women in my family and they pretty much raised all their girls to be strong and independent, so I'm thinking there was very little need for any "famous" female role model..
... Oh what the heck, Astrid Lindgren :D I love her to pieces.

What about Princess Leia?
Leia was cool. But to me, she never looked more comfortable than in her fatigues on Endor, and never more uncomfortable than in her diplomatic gown and cinnimon bun updo. I think of her as more a soft butch. But that's just me.

Hmmm...The Bionic Woman, Lindsey Wagner, maybe.
And...wow, not too many back then. Lois Lane but the late 70s Lois Lane, who was smart & not obsessed with proving Clark was Superman.
Evaine from Katherine Kurtz' Deryni books.
Lessa from the DragonRiders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey.
Eowyn from Tolkien's LotR.
Oh, and I caught these two in reruns:
Batgirl from the Batman TV show. How much did I want her bike? Oh, a LOT.

I never get fun questions like that from my therapist. "How did that make you feel?" I get that one a lot along with follow ups regarding what I was thinking that might have led to those unhealthy feelings and what more positive ways of thinking and behaving I can use to replace them.
When I was a kid, my mom.
Now there really isn't any one. I admire the style of my sister-in-law's partner, for whom being very femme is half her natural way of doing things and half social statement--she says she deliberately goes a little more femme than she might otherwise if she weren't a lesbian because she wants to make a statement that being a lesbian doesn't mean she has to fit into anyone else's idea of how she should present herself.
But I really wouldn't call her a femme model. I mostly just absorb information from the social circles in which I find myself, and try to adapt my manner of presentation as appropriate while trying to maintain my own unique identity. I do tend to overdo it in an attempt not to stand out too much, and I'm not quite so good at the "maintain my own unique identity" part yet. Still working on that part.

I don't know if it's weird, but I never had a female role model as well. There are females that I think were awesome and made big strides but I don't really see any of them as role models.
If so then they would be:
Josefine Baker
Betty Page
Boudicca
Cassandra Cain
I prefer my male role models.

Mine's gotta be Tori Amos if the sig doesn't give it away. Besides her skills on a piano, I'm just in love with her lyrics... they have a mythological component to them that she is able to tie to real world emotions, and even events. The early stuff is the most powerful to me, but oh man! If I only had five minutes to spend with a brain like that, I would be satiated for weeks, maybe months.
