Just a reminder -- it's still FOOTBALL SEASON! This time, John Elway in the 1994 Throwback uniform...

Nice art man. What did you color it with?Yeah, we need more sports-related art around here.

And I'm guessing he used markers, but I could be wrong.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, I print the inks on photo paper and use Pantone Trius markers to color. On this one, I tried to create more texture by dissolving some of the black with the marker to create more shades.

Much as I hate to do it, he _had_ to be the Player of the Week after strafing the Steelers for 399 yards and 4 TD's. Some stuff to consider:
I tried to give the colors a less blotchy look, though this is still colored on photo paper.
the throwing hand was particularly difficult (here is the reference (http://d.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20071209/capt.35e0032401424340bec948da0ae6cee8.steelers_pat riots_football_mass110.jpg))

It's nice, but I think this is a time you should cheat. Pick an arm position that gives a stronger sillywet and choose a different hand position. I dunno... practice throwing a ball until you find something that might translate better to 2d.

We partially odder foreshortening in photos, but they are harder to pull off in a drawing, and right now it doesn't look like his throw is giving the power of a "I'm Tom Brady and I'm an OK player... I mean, the team played great... My 26 completions in the second half... yea, I guess that helped a little" throw.

jedi34567
12-14-2007, 03:28 PM
I think you are right and I did briefly consider changing the pose significantly, but I thought I could pull it off. I am really trying to not be a slave to the reference material and in this case, I definitely should have gone with a different configuration for the throwing arm.

I tried to do Anna from this reference (http://hubpages.com/u/16881_f496.jpg). Obviously, it is not a great likeness. Any ideas on what is wrong? I tried to measure the proportions and locations of facial features, etc.

Okay -- I did a couple of things I want to share. First, I did a contour-type drawing -- trying to get the outline of the pic without looking at the page. That is on the top (I added some details afterward). I then traced the actual reference. That is at the bottom.

http://paulmcrae.ca/picture-gallery/albums/userpics/10001/contour-sketch.jpg

I then took this experience and tried to apply it to the original drawing. Basically, I changed the outline of her face, moved the nose and mouth. Now, I think this one is a lot better, though not there yet. OF course, I am often deluded. ;-)

Okay, so here is the next iteration. Taking into consideration what I learned from the contour drawing and the tracing of the reference in addition to my attempt to re-work the original drawing, I started fresh. I didn't go to town on rendering this one, but I think the likeness is improved. Comments?

I kind of look at things like this when I draw, just the basic shapes:

http://www.jimthorpe-art.com/example.jpg

I look at the shapes, but I also kind of know (still learning) what is going on with the anatomy there, and the way things are moving within space - like how the planes of the face are not flat, eyes, lips, etc. - even though the photo makes it appear flat you have to kind of imagine your pencil moving through the same space, curving around the surface - I've read you can even go a little farther to help get the feeling of the image, make it seem like that line is curving away into space- like the bottom lip wrapping around.

I just noticed this looks like a Greg Land drawing now!! (had to get a slam on the Land-ster, sorry)

I've gotten lots of feedback about coloring these football players using markers, so I thought I would try some other techniques. I started with this drawing of Devin Hester, mostly because the uniform colors are a challenge (blue-black, for the most part). Let me know what you think.

Here is the original reference photo (http://cache1.gettyimages.com/xc/78677887.jpg?v=1&c=NewsMaker&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF193587004028B1CDC4EBFE777D95810F969 ).

One thing as to the re-do of the Anna Nicole Smith drawing; it's pretty close, but if you fixed two things, it would but pretty much spot ON: your proportions are stretched more in the height; if you "shrunk it down" so to speak vertically, that would be big. I opened it in Photoshop and changed it from 1024 high to 950 high, and it was amazingly close. Then, I noticed you emphasized her tongue rather than her teeth. Everything else was very, very close.

I think my perspective is a bit off, not sure why.

I think it's because of the hoop's position. It looks like it is off to the side instead of in the center.

In the photo, the hoop is in the same spot as the drawing, but the photo doesn't show the lane lines extended all the way like the drawing did.

But other than that, the picture is great, especially his jersey, since it looks like it's folded and crumpled.

So I took my pencil sketch of Eli (http://paulmcrae.ca/picture-gallery/albums/userpics/10001/eli-manning-superbowl-xlii-pencils.jpg) and tried to paint using watercolor. Since I have no idea what I am doing, I would appreciate any pointers. Here is what I have so far. One question I have is: when are you done? Unlike the ink and marker drawings, I could probably sit around and paint this forever without feeling finished.

What I do when I have a little trouble w/perspective and posing is to position myself in the same position the character is. Sometimes your brain needs that click to make it make sense. Actually there was nothing too too wrong w/the face on the Phoenix just the neck needed to be soften a little, and the lips were a hair off. Other than that I think your pretty much on the right track. I noticed alot of people (especially me) have trouble putting too too much detail, or not enough detail on bodies, you don't really have that problem at all whatsoever which is a HUGE plus.

If there is anything specific you would like to see, let me know and if it strikes my fancy, I might just do it.
