How many storylines have there been where The Joker died or was thought to finally be dead?
He's the one Batman villain I can't ever see going away but I'm curious to hear if anyone has honestly tried to off the Batman villain goldmine?

Before I give a longer reply, can we count Elseworlds, or not?
Also, IIRC, there was a 'Many Deaths of Joker' thread here a while ago. It had quite the complete list.

IIRC, in some story before Murderer" Nightwing strangled him and "killed" him. But then he came back to life.

Nightwing I believe either suffocated him or something similar but then revived him with CPR.

That'd be the Joker: Last Laugh crossover.

Nah, I'm referring to main continuity.

Joker died in his second appearance (Batman #1) and came back in the very next issue. Since then, I think it's been pretty much assumed that he'll never stay down. The only time DC ever seemed serious about convincing us that Mr. J was dead was after his apparent death at the end of "Death in the Family." Joker didn't appear again for several years after, but I don't think anyone was seriously convinced that he was dead. Even Batman was uncomfortable with the fact that he could not locate the body after Joker apparently bought it.

Actually, I believe it was Batman who revived him. Nightwing tried to do him in after he mistakenly believed that the Joker had killed Tim Drake.

From a LOTDK one-off story a couple of years back.
SPOILER: Joker hid a bomb somewhere and Batman has to know where it is. It's funny out of context, though.

And there was also the time that Bats had to resurrect Joker using the Lazarus Pits, a story also in LOTDK.

Technically, Joker did not die in Batman #1. Though he was originally intended to kick the bucket, that notion was changed at the last minute, and thus we got a final panel exclaiming that The Joker was infact, alive!
Joker seemingly meeting his death, was an early story telling idea in alot of early Joker stories where at the end of each said story, The Joker's death seemed to be at hand. Though always questionable.
As far as Joker's mortality rate goes, he did indeed die in Detective #64 "The Joker walks the last Mile" via the electric chair. Needless to say, he was brought back to life in the same very issue.
