Here's a photo of what one of the aliens looks like.

I don't really know much about the movie. But it's Cameron so it should be interesting.

From the advisory post at the top of the board (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=192654):

Put some thought into it. Starting up a thread with a one or two sentence summation of a thought isn't good enough. Do not just give a topic and then say "Discuss" or "Why". Also, do not provide only a link to somewhere else and nothing else as the whole post. If you want to talk about something, talk about it. Put some effort into it and make it a springboard for future conversation.

I'm going to leave this thread up, but I'm going to try to help get things started a bit more.

The basic synopsis of the movie is: "In the future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture."

James Cameron has said he's been working on this movie in some form or another since 1995. While a lot of people are eagerly awaiting this movie, there have been criticisms from those that claim to have seen scripts or conceptual art that the movie seems more inspired from previous works than trying to be a work on its own. Then again, Cameron himself has said the inspiration for Avatar is every science fiction book he ever read, especially the John Carter of Mars series.

Here's a shot at the conceptual art of one of the aliens.

I have a lot of faith in Cameron. He seems to know exactly what he wants out of his movies and delivers every time. I'm looking forward to this.

It's Cameron and It's Sci-Fi so I dont see how Avatar can suck. Cant wait till this movie comes out.

Personally he should have done Aliens vs Predator.

Personally he should have done Aliens vs Predator.

If he had, it would have been good, but I'd much rather he have been moving forward on this and BATTLE ANGEL (which he was) than have done something like that film.

It has been too many years since Cameron's done a sci-fi film, and this one seems his dream project, so that coupled with the new technology he's introducing has me excited.

Yeah, I really hope he eventually does Battle Angel Alita....its such a perfect fit....the anime reminded me of T2 way back in the day when I first watched it, so when I heard Cameron was interested in turning it into a live action film...well....needless to say I was elated.

As for Avatar....its hard not to be excited about it....What was Cameron's last film? Titanic, right? Thats a long time! I think if I read that synopsis, and it was being directed by anyone else, I wouldn't be very interested....JC could make something like this very epic and quality....I am very eager to hear more about this!

How long has this been in production? A decade? More?

I'm not really digging this whole CGI trend but I have faith in Cameron. Unless he's gone completely nuts, this should be a good movie

Sorry Justin. I couldn't find a decent Avatar thread to add it to and I don't know a whole lot about the movie. And that picture was floating around for a while and no one has mentioned it here.

If it was a picture of Battle Angel ALita I'd be more excited. But still it's Cameron doing sci-fi...

This is Cameron's own concept, so that's neat. Though I too am much more excited about this adaptation of Battle Angel Alita.

Cameron's name isn't enough to get my hopes up anymore. Hopefully he'll pull out a winner. It's been over a decade sense he's done anything that I've really liked. I'm pretty sure Terminator 2 was the last movie he directed that I actually enjoyed. Maybe I'm forgetting something, but I cant' think of anything.

Wasn't Titanic his last film? Not my type of movie, but its a good film in my opinion....But we all know he should be rocking the sci-fi.

I absolutely hate that movie in every conceivable way...but yeah, he has a better chance at doing something good in Sci-Fi.

To be fair, it has been over a decade since he has done a movie period.

I'm gonna say it now....way ahead of time....

I'll bet I will shed a tear at this film.
'Jake, a paraplegic war veteran'

It's gonna be awsome....

Well, a Hollywood or mainstream film. Cameron became busy making documentaries, namely ones about sea exploration. Despite my interest in the field, I never went out and saw them. They were released on Imax, especially among the science museum and aquarium circuit. Still kicking myself I didn't check out Aliens of the Deep when it was playing at a local aquarium's Imax screen.

Plus he spent a couple of years on Dark Angel. Pretty much his own toned down nearer future version of Battle Angel Alita if you ask me. Not really a rip off, but I think he was certainly inspired.

Yeah, I was intentionally not referring to those. I guess it has been 10 years since he has made a non-documentary film.

And Dark Angel definitely had touches of Battle Angel Alita, but nothing more than touches really. It took inspiration from a number of places, but Alita was probably foremost among them.

There's an article here in Variety that's of interest to this up coming project.

It's pretty technical but I found this fascinating. Dec. 18, 2009 for a release date. It'll be a fine, fine christmas.
