View Full Version : Who dies in Giant Size Astonshing?

The solicitations say one of the X-Men won't walk away from this fight. So, who is it? If this story takes place before Messiah Complex, then we know it's not Cyclops, Beast, Emma, or Colossus. So far I don't recall seeing Shadowcat in any of the x-over issues. But after all of the work Whedon has put into making Kitty kick ass, would he throw it all away by killing her? I really don't know who it would be.

Personaly i hope none of them do, it's such a waste. All the characters in astonishing bring something great to the team, and wheedon has made great developments on the cyke and katya front. It's my faviroute X-book for years.

There lies the trick statement.... It doesn't necessarily say that someone will die. It say that someone won't WALK AWAY from the fight. They did the same thing with Bobby and Sam when they were ambushed by the Marauders.

So I believe that someone will be severely injured, but not killed.

It pretty much has to be Kitty.

Did they?

I seem to recall mention of a deadly ambush (or something real close) and the strong possibility of someone not walking away/

And Kitty's so dying.

Whedon loves to build up then tear down. I suspect Kitty gets put down. Plus, in the Marvel Previews that came out today there is a cover for Uncanny X-Men #495 that shows Logan packed up and leaving (I assume for X-Force) and Colussus also has a backpack and is heading out the door (actually a gaping hole in the mansion wall) in his short shorts.

I seriously doubt Colussus would leave were Kitty alive and well.

Not to mention Kitty and Lockeheed's noticable absence on that cover, in additon to the variant of Astonishing 24, the last issue before Giant Sized, which only features Kitty and Lockeheed.

So Kitty dies somewhere between Blinded by the Light (where she is very much alive to give Emma the location of Destiny's diaries) and Messiah Complex without anyone referencing it? Seems kinda ludicrous. Scott and his team fly off into space between the first Marauder attack and the new mutant baby being born to combat aliens who resurrected Collosus ages ago?

It would really be best if the whole Whedon run was placed out of continuity because it makes no sense at all if it is set in continuity the way it is playing out now.

Just comes off as somewhat delusional in Kitty's case.

It's not as if the editors wanted every other team member (well, maybe not Colossus) around a lot more than Kitty or anything.

Everything seems to indicate Kitty Pryde is the one who dies or something else happens to her on Whedon's finale. A shame really, since when he took over it's the first time I've enjoyed the character and has become one of my favourites, and now he's tearing it all appart. Also disturbing is that she's going down with a plot as lame as the Breakworld aliens...

I hope it's Lockheed or Danger...

Or... is Cassandra Nova still possessing someone? Torn's conclusionwas so vague. That may come into the mix when the time comes.

Usualy Joss has the tendency to "emo/goth up" happy characters or kill off characters that are more happy and comic relief, just take a look at his work on Buffy, Angel (Angel's half demon friend Doyel(?) on the first season...he was my favorite) and Firefly/Serenity (Wedge)

So I think if it's not Kitty, then maybe Armor?

And they don't have to die, they could just get left behind.

Ok did everyone just not read the past few issues of X-men? Kitty was at the mansion when it was attacked by the Acolytes which happened like a week before Messiah Complex. Quill was shown alive in Astonishing and then he died in New X-men. So its a safe bet that all the X-men will live but one will get hurt and have to be carried away, because he/she can't walk away

Do you hate Kitty because of some sense of honor for Emma's good name, or is it something else? I personally have always liked Kitty since her early days in X-Men to Excaliber and back to X-Men. Not sure where all the hate is coming from. She's a good character. Just because she doesn't like Emma (who Kitty saw kill her own men, torture various X-Men and manipulate her parents all in her first introduction to her) shouldn't mean you hate her.

Probably the same reason he killed his other "favorites" in his TV and movie work.

If that was true, he would have killed off Buffy at the end of Season 7. Or killed Willow.

Joss kills characters because of the impact it would have on other characters - i.e. Tara died because of what it would do to Willow, Wash for what it would to do Zoe, and Buffy's mom for how it would impact Buffy & Dawn. Those deaths lead to bigger story arcs.

Joss didn't kill off any character at the end of Season 7 that he thought would continue on in a spinoff. Emma Caufield wasn't all that interested in being in a spinoff, so Anya got killed, mainly because characters had to die in the Buffy finale to show that people die senseless deaths in war.

But Joss wanted to leave the characters he loved around to use them again.

There isn't enough time in Astonishing for Joss to really show the impact of anyone's death. It would simply be a death for the sake of killing someone and shock value.

Fox Network execs desperately wanted Joss to kill off a member of the Firefly cast (because they thought the cast was too big, but also for a big shock death episode). And Joss refused because he couldn't bare to part with any of the characters. Firefly might have gotten a couple more episodes if Joss had agreed to do a big death episode. But still Joss wouldn't kill anyone off. He won't do cheap, shock value deaths.

So unless Joss has plotted with Warren Ellis a story arc coming out of the death of a character from the GS Astonishing, it doesn't fit what his usual pattern.

The only way Joss would want to kill off his favorite character is for the story that would follow. With Messiah Complex, what's the point? Kitty's death would likely have no ramifications. Everything is changing as a result of Messiah Complex, not Kitty's death.

Also, Joss is all about feminism and girl power. He's built up Kitty into the predominant female superhero. Kitty has won Wizards Female Superhero of the Year award multiple times since he's take over Astonishing. At this point, Joss is most likely to be considering what he leaves as his legacy. And what would be better - killing his favorite character or leaving her for other writers he respects to use?

And he'll never hear the end of it from his fans.

Alright, so not only does the solicitation say something about an X-Man not walking away; but the cover to Marvel Previews says, "Say goodbye to Joss Whedon and one of the X-Men." I am going to be so pissed if it is Kitty. Not because she's my favorite character or anything. Just because it would show the complete stupidity of the editors of the X-books. I am loving Messiah Complex, and Astonishing has been one of my favorite books despite the lateness. But it would totally screw up continuity. Before all of this, I placed the events of Torn and Unstoppable before Civil War. But now I am not so sure. I really hope they don't screw it up.

And just when I finally got to liking her again!

It's funny, I read the X-Men back when Kitty hadn't quit and gone to Excaliber. Well, I fell out of comics for a few years, and when I came back, Kitty and other members were no longer in the book, nor was she or the others mentioned, so I thought they'd been killed off! I was especially sad thinking about poor Kitty being dead!

But once I started reading stories with her in them, none of them really clicked for me and Kitty quickly became a character I wished was dead.

Oh, and how I especially hated what Claremont did to her personality and what not in that Mechanix mini. Oh, pure shit.

I didn't like hearing that Kitty was going to be a part of the team in Astonishing. But after the first issue, I enjoyed her character more than I ever had before.

So if she is dying, well, Claremont will find a way to bring her back, younger than ever. Of course, with her powers, any writer could easily find a way to bring her back a la Apparition from Legion (physical body destroyed but her love bonded her to her indestructable boyfriend who was caught in the same explosion that killed her<--- Kind of wrecked the character, btw) But frankly, sometimes it is best for a character to go out while still on top.

Before I hit post though, I do have to say I do have my doubts about Kitty dying though. We'll see.

He can hate her for whatever reason he wants.

So if she is dying, well, Claremont will find a way to bring her back, younger than ever.

No he won't.

He's busy with Kitty Roge... I mean, Pryde over in Exiles.

All of the Messiah Complex evidence leads to Kitty being dead, since she is the only Astonishing cast member who is not appearing in the crossover. But this does not make it a fact that Whedon kills her off in Astonishing. The evidence supports it, but we won't find out until February for sure.

It has nothing to do with Emma.

I find her boring and little more than a mouthpiece for old school X-fans.

Plus, she has sex with retarded people. And I think that's illegal.

lol, old school reprezent!

Seriously the cast is too good to kill off, i could understand if some were maybe B-lister but none of them are. It'll only be met by a birrage of fanboys complaining they lost their faviroute character and will be undone within a year...i don't see the point.

I never understood why anyone finds Kitty boring. Might be the lack of slutty wear, I think. C'mon, she's a Jewish Ninja that walks through walls! You really can't go wrong with that kind of combination.

I've said it before, but her death would be pretty stupid as far as continuity. She's in New X-Men right before the Purifiers hit Alaska, so that's a matter of days, IF THAT. I think she's still around, just not in all of the action.

Danger will probably become an X-Man, then be the one that dies.

I don't think Danger is a choice. Here's the deal: The Marvel Previews that hit the shelf yesterday has some X-Men on the cover and has a blurb at the bottom...

"Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men
Say goodbye to Joss Whedon, John Cassaday and one of these mutants! An era ends this February"

Pictured on the cover are Colossus, Beast, Kitty, Emma, Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Angel and Nightcrawler (Shield is shown on the interior of the magazine from the same shot).

I think the whole "say goodbye" thing also disproves the crippling theories based upon the "will not walk away" line.

Also, given the Uncanny X-Men #495 cover (also in Marvel Previews) that shows Emma, Scott, Angel, Nightcrawler, Logan (with a duffle bag heading away from the mansion, presumably to join X-Force) and Peter (who has a backpack and is walking away from the mansion as well) I think the choices are narrowed down quite a bit.

We're looking at Kitty, Shield (maybe, she wasn't on the front cover at all, just the interior shot of the cover) Storm or Beast. Well, Storm is all tied up in Black Panther right now and I doubt she's the one. Shield is iffy. Beast or Kitty seem most likely and given Whedon's penchant for offing his favorites, I am going with Kitty.

I think that it's really odd that Marvel is trying to throw Storm, Angel and Nightcrawler into the (death)pool at this point.

Just posting this twist ... one of the X-men "dies" but its a Skrull who is then brought back to life. Don't assume that this issue won't tie into Secret Invasion

1. It has got Nick Fury

2. It has a shadow group of Shield

3. It has alien resurection technology

4. We have confirmation that Skrulls are going to be popping up in Jan-March

Actually the official plans started (April 2004) Secret War 1 right when they signed Whedon Avengers 500 (September 2004) and Astonshing X-men 1 came out the around the same time (July 2004), which is why you really need to look at books from that Reload period of time on foward. Those are when the clues started popping up.

Wanda wouldn't have been able to depower skrulls.

The pieces are all there for a twist, and I am calling/praying for a big one.

How was it retconned? ;)

Kitty de-aged again.....Kurt returning to background character from pro-active leader....Brian allowed to be a scientist again besides some muscle guy in a suit...just off the top of my head here.

Anyway. I'm sure the previews might be exaggerating. Or one of the X-Men has been dead all this time and was replaced with a Skrull. Whedon hasn't played with the Skrulls yet and he might want to jump on that before he leaves the title.

Or you know, it's some put upon nobody in the team that hasn't been seen for a while and will reappear for a panel or two before incidental death, like.....Lila Cheney.

I still say Lockheed.
Lockheed the brave nobel dragon who befriended Kitty during the brood saga wil sacrifice himself in a hopes to get back on her good graces while Kitty herself is so distraut that she leaves the X-Mansion and Colossus to go to Excalibur to be with the hard edged Pete Wisdom. Thus, he lack of presence in the new books.

Well that or they call Danger a X-Men and then she gets blasted to the four winds and they all shrug and go home where Kitty then goes to Excalibur because she needs to think about where she wants to go with her life and she cannot do it with Colossus there.

Lockheed always was/is a member. He was a memeber of any team Kitty was on the since that was who he traveled and bonded with.

Same way Jubilee was on the X-Men when she grafted herself to Wolverine.

I hope it's not Kitty. That scene where she goes into the depths of the earth to retrieve Emma and addresses her as a "b!tch" is classic. She should stick around solely for the reason of calling Emma out for what she is instead of kowtowing to her like the rest of the X-Men ...

Well, perhaps she should stick around for more reasons than that, but it's certainly a significant one. We need at least one X-Man who'll keep sticking two fingers up at Emma... I mean, when even Wolverine is shrugging his shoulders and going "Okay, Emma, whatever you say," you know something's not right...

Hey, when you're right, you're right. Like whenever Wolvie decides to put a couple of claws through some grey matter rather than incapacitate someone.

OK, yeah, Emma is still a bitch, but so far, near as I can tell, she has only been wrong about trusting the cuckoos and in seducing Scott (Unless she is still a villain in which case it makes total sense, and yes, I still think she'll turn back.)

Y'know, as much as I'd like to see Emma thrown out of the mansion on her ear, it's not going to happen - not while Joe "Emma Frost is soooooooo kewl and Jean Grey is a stoopid poopy-head" Quesada is in charge, anyway, and even when he's gone, it'll still be a very unlikely event.

See, Marvel has realised that Emma = $$$, and will thus not want her to be doing anything except making regular appearances in a core title. Why would they exchange the steady flow of cash-money provided by her presence on an X-Team for sales spikes whenever she shows up as a member/the leader of some anonymous band of mutant thugs?

Emma's not going anywhere. And somewhere, an angel is weeping because of it.

Preaching to the choir. Joe Q. has ruined Spider-Man. I felt his influence was felt less in every other title. Perhaps I was wrong. Do you have any links or comments from Mr. Quesada regarding the X-Titles to back your statements up? For some reason, I always felt Joey was disconnected from the X-Office. No real reason why, It just seems he was really interested in screwing Peter Parker over and cared less about other titles.
