We've got the various Supermen from comics poll already. We might as well have one for the Supermen of TV and movies...

Ya can't beat Christopher Reeve in my books.

Christopher Reeve all the way! no one can play Superman better then him, although Brendon Routh and Tom Welling with Tim Daily are good.

I prefer the animated versions over the live-action versions myself. So it's a toss up between the better animated Fleischer cartoons, or the more familiar JLU Superman of my generation.

I guess I'll go with the Fleischer toons right now.

They aren't, and their last names are actually slightly different. The Superman of 1950s television was George Reeves, while the Superman of the 1970s/1980s movies was Christopher Reeve.

Christopher Reeve was just perfect as Superman. His was the only performance where this really would work as a joke. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ImhXNFkNW2s)

Christopher Reeve hands down, in every category that defines Superman.

In terms of looking like how superman should look, here's how I rate them though:

1. Christopher Reeve
2. Brandon Routh
3. Tom Welling
4. Dean Cain

In terms of acting ability:

1. Christopher Reeve
2. Dean Cain
3. Brandon Routh
4. Tom Welling

In terms of how good their respective Superman film(s) or show were/are:

1. Christopher Reeve
2. Tom Welling (first few seasons)
3. Dean Cain
4. Brandon Routh(not his fault really, bad script)

Christopher Reeve out of all of them made the most impact to most generations including mine so I don't see anyone ever topping him unless Brandon Routh can get some good stuff to work with come the next few movies.

The Bruce Timm Superman is very pure in vision and takes the best aspects of the comics and remains uncomplicated. His parents, the Daily Planet supporting cast, his relationship with the Legion, his constant fights with Luthor and all that good stuff although he's a little dull in personality.

Brandon Routh comes ever so close to being the Reeve Superman we want to see again but he's written as rather low key and almost too passive. That aspect affects what was overall a very good performance in channelling Reeve's take and Routh's own Clark/Superman, like Berserk said hopefully the next few scriptwriters as well as Bryan Singer will let him come through more with his personality but Routh looked and gave me a much better impression than Cain.

Tom Welling I can't really count because even though his young Clark is quite good, that's all he pretty much is rather than the full blown Superman we all know so he remains just a younger aspect of Superman rather than the whole character.

Wasn't there a different voice actor for Superman in the JL series? I mean, compared to the Superman animated series that came before.

Routh won't top Reeve, ever.

In addition to the script and possibly lack of acting talent, Reeve IS Superman. Everybody that seen it will remember it forever. Young, old, it doesn't matter. It'll be a long time before Routh tops Reeve, and that'll probably be due to people dying and forgetting about Superman the movie due to age of film than anything else.

Although I didn't have a problem with Routh in the beginning, I now believe an older guy would be better. Reeve just looked older and more mature, even if he was only 24 when Superman was made. If Routh was somehow casted as a Superboy/young Superman (basically late teens to late 20s) he'd be really good.

Yeah there was.

Tim Daly was the Animated Series Superman/Clark and the JLU one was George Newbern although I liked Tim Daly much more since his was more I dunno "confident" I guess is the word.

Routh to me seems like the Superman/Clark that just made it to Metropolis rather than one that came back after a few years. He looked weird in Superman Returns, in some shots he looked like he could pass for Superman while in others he looked rather young. I think by the time the next film comes along they'll make some improvements on his look and he'll look a bit older.

I guess that means I can't vote.

Combined, it's just not as good as Daly alone.

Ooh! There's an "Other" option.

Routh did look like Christopher Reeve at times during the movie, then at other times he looked like a guy who just came out of college. Also, the scenes about his past in Smallville only added to the feeling that he was a younger superman just starting out at the Daily Planet rather than an older superman who was returning to Earth. If they had made the movie about his beginning, sort of like Batman Begins, I think it would have been more appropriate since Routh is probably going to do atleast two more films, so we'd see him grow into the role. One thing's for sure though, they need a better script next time. I don't want to sit through another movie which consists mostly of Superman stalking Lois or doing his own rendition of Jesus in Passion of the Christ.

As Clark or Superman? Oh wait - as both because the only difference between Cain's Clark and his Superman was that Superman folded his arms.

Yep, definitely agree with you on that. Actually his facial features (eyes especially), body structure and that high pitch voice would be a better fit for Captain Marvel (Shazam). Just sort of equate the high pitch voice to Billy Batson's 'half-transformed' vocals :p

Christopher Reeve hands down is my favorite Supes as well. Like BYC said Reeve IS Superman, hotwired to my fond memories and will forever be THE Big Blue in spirit.
