I think its great Nintendo is back. After the failure of the gamecube they needed something. I truly hope they don't make the same mistakes.

Yeah, same here. GC wasn't as good as the older Nintendo consols.

games were great, it just got trounced by PS2, which had its success based on the PS1. I love my cube :(

Ok, I'll admit, I'm stunned.
Did _ANYONE_ honestly think that the Wii was going to be a runaway success?
When it first was announced and people saw the hardware specifications, all we saw was Nintendo putting out a cheap product. The graphics power was compareable to the *original* Xbox, it seemed gimmicky with the Wiimote and the name?
The Wii? :evilsmile Be serious, who here didn't shake their heads in disbelief.
Everyone was predicting this generation to be a fight between Xbox 360 and the PS3 with the Wii paying for itself but that's it.
Now, about a year after its debut and I think it has already nearly caught up to the 360 in terms of total market sales AND by next year, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the number 1 console.
So what the hell did Nintendo know that we didn't?

don't ask me, I'm with you. But the answer could be everyone enjoys the Wii, even old people and casual gamers. You grab a 'mote, start Wii Tennis and have a good time.
the DS has been a surprise as well. i remember when they announced it, and the PSP was just around the corner. The difference in terms of sheer horsepower was staggering, and I just couldn't help thinkin' two screens were a unnecessary gimmick, and Sony woulve gotten the portable market just like it did with the home console one. Now, several millions of difference later, we have the answer

agreed,
but i wanna go back to the gamecube issue.i think the game cube was a great system that had good games.they just could never get good quality 3rd party games outside of capcom.i don't know why third parties shunned the gamecube.they have no choice but to pay attention to the wii.

See that's just the problem; the games were not great. They shot themselves in the foot with Zelda: windwaker. The graphics killed it for most people, and took away from the legendary feel that the past games had held. Also Mario Sunshine was god awful. The two flagship titles were just not a success. It made people think the Gamecube was for kids. I would say this was the most common comment I heard concerning the cube.
I think the Wii has taken a much better route. Twilight was an outstanding game, and Galaxy is superb. I think this will bring people into the Wii. Not to mention Wii sports is a load of fun, and the price tag on the Wii (which I think is a large part of it).

It's already the #1 console worldwide, it passed the 360 in September. The 360 still sells a ton more software though. The main reason 3rd party support sucked on the Gamecube is three-fold. First, the console never really got off the ground in comparison to the PS2. Second, Nintendo historically is not that good with 3rd party developers. Third, buyers historically have not really supported 3rd party titles on Nintendo consoles. This last generation, on cross-platform releases, the Gamecube version usually sold a fraction of the Xbox or PS2 version and the only 3rd party games that sold in any decent amount on the GC were the Resident Evil and the Sonic titles and even then, it was still a fraction of what 1st party titles sell.
The Wii does seem to change a lot of this, but at the moment for American-focused titles, developers are still likely looking at the 360 as their primary platform since the amount of software it pushes is pretty amazing. The Wii is definitely getting more attention and hopefully strong sales of titles like GH3 and RE4 will help spur more development.

this is when they started calling Nintendo gamecube a kiddie console.their flagships was kinda the opposite of what the public expected.but sunshine and windwaker was still a good game. not to mention metroid prime was an outstanding game.what hurt gamecube was the lack of support from 3rd party developers which was previously mentioned.

i can name you at least 20 GC games that were no less than great. And you obviously never played Wind Waker if you think it doesn't carry the same magic other Zelda games got. It was a beautiful, yet flawed game. But still beautiful.
why not?
Super Smash Bros Melee
Pikmin
Pikmin 2
RE 4
Tales of Symphonia
Wind Waker
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2
Resident Evil REmake
RE Zero
Soul Calibur 2
Eternal Darkness
Viewtiful Joe
Paper Mario
Timesplitters 2
Animal Crossing
Star Wars Rogue Squadron
Waverace
Super Monkey Ball 2
Beyond Good and Evil
Splinter Cell
..and there are more. I still stand my opinion: GC was a excellent console, with a good chunk of good games, and a fistful of some of the best games of the past generation. It's just that the masses were more interested in the PS2

I actually did play Wind Waker. I wasn't saying I myself I was saying the masses. I, however, was disappointed with it. It just wasn't as superior as Ocarina or Majora. They just took it into too different of a direction.
I was also saying that the system was disappointing to the masses. I was trying to make a reason for why people didn't like it. I enjoyed it, it was just that no one else did.
Also the controllers were god awful until the awesomeness of the wavebird.

I thought that with "took away.." you meant graphics sucked because there was no magic in it. Well if you say it wasn't superior to OOT and Majora (Majora was a titanic game) I agree..it really wasn't. Too short and easy, and sidequests were not that rewarding (just like the ones in TP in my opinion..rupees galore)

I think that TP was far superior to Wind Waker though. I think this is a large reason why nintnedo is on the right track this time around; lets just hope they keep it that way.
They need to release a great multi-player game. I think Smash brothers will be this. I think they need something a little more for the older crowds though, not that we won't enjoy Smash Bro.

TP was definitely superior, and kind of underrated.
I really, really hope the next Zelda will be a reboot because the formula is starting to stink a bit..TP woiuld be a awesome swan song
a online FPS would be neat. Medal of Honor 2 is a great game, works wonderfully online and the controls are a blast..but it's not exactly popular. Let's see what comes next

Nope. Generally curious as to what others think.
I kinda know why the DS proved more popular than the PSP. It wasn't just price but the fact that the DS had games only available on it. I mean, pre NintendoDogs, the DS wasn't exactly selling like gangbusters but that title really increased its appeal.

Most of the games don't sell all that much. You don't see many Wii games very high on the sales charts. What "quality" games are people getting the Wii for if they're aren't buying them? For a system with such a large install base, it's pretty strange that they rarely have any games that really sell, isn't it? Even Mario Galaxy's sales weren't that great (in Japan, I think it's doing pretty good in the US). Probably because all those non-gamers that Nintendo is marketing to don't go out and buy games in droves. Or play very much, (http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/10/16/67-of-wii-owners-havent-touched-the-console-recently) apparently (http://blogs.cnet.com/8301-13506_1-9799172-17.html).

there's a bunch of million sellers for the Wii already. Sure, shovelware crap isn't selling and that's a good thing, but I agree with you that casual gamers seem more interested in Mario Party than Mario Galaxy, at least in Japan
