I used to be a huge superman fan as a kid. I devoured superman comics, watched the animated series, watched all of his movies with Christopher Reeve, and I used to fantasize about having his powers. But, then I hit puberty and forgot all about him for a few years. Then, I started to watch Smallville and I liked it for the first few seasons. I hated the recent superman movie. I want to get back into the superman comics but I don't know where to start. I'm no longer a kid, now 20 years old, so my tastes have matured. Are there any new superman comics that cater to older audiences or is everything pretty much for kids?

I'd say your best bet is with the All-Star Superman titles. It's more of a "light-hearted" take on the Superman mythos, for lack of a better word. It's got a Silver Age type of feel to it. And it isn't necessarily for kids either. And I say this as a 22 year old.

Also pick up Some trades of Kurt Busiek's Superman stuff. Up, Up and Away, and Camelot Falls are really good. And the current arc of Action Comics is pretty awesome too.

Basically what I'm saying is try out all the current stuff out there and pick which you like best. They're all great IMO. :p

I was thinking about picking up Kingdom Come. Do you think that's a good place to start? I've heard it's outside of the DC universe in terms of the storyline, etc. and Superman is older.

Do so. It's a fine piece of literature. I also can't recommend Kurt Busiek's current work on the Superman title enough. They changed Adventures of Superman into just Superman. You can pick up the first part of his excellent Camelot Falls arc in a hardcover right now.

LOL! I knew someone would make a gay joke about the title of this thread, it was just a matter of time.

Thanks. I'll definitely check them out.

All-star superman is ok...

superman i believe is the best title.

superman confidential is utterly awful, really.

superman/batman is a bit hit and miss....

Just my opinon, pull them a couple times each and make up your own opinion.

Hell yeah you should. All-Star Supeman, it's seperate from the DCU as well, I don't know what your budget is like but if you can, start at Action Comics #829 and follow the series from there on out, get the last 6 Issues of the Avd of Superman series, it reverts back to just "Superman" and the Superman 2nd series fades away.

Superman Confidental is a waste, and if you missed Infinite Crisis, pick it up. As for 52 and Countdown, Supes isn't in it, but it does build up to the next big Event from DC. Read Kingdom Come and if you want more of that Superman, then pick up Justice Society of America #10:

It came out last month and blew me away!

Alex Ross' Justice is also good stuff outside the DCU.

Don't worry about questions, I'm sure there's A TON of people that can help you out. Good luck.

All-Star's a gem; it's good for newbs & old fogeys tiring of constant events/tie-ins alike.

Kingdom Come is technically an "Elseworlds" tale, but also an excellent read. If you have already read post-crisis on infinite earths Superman there are a lot of good choices but I would need to know what story arc you last read.

If you have not read anything past 1985, I would say start with the TPB "Man of Steel" Volume 1. This is the first Superman issues after the Crisis and re-introduces Lex Luthor, Lois Lane and all the other Superman characters. It even has the first meeting between Batman and Superman. Basically it is a reprinting of the Mini-Series Man of Steel. If you like this TPB you can then read them in order and go from there.

Here is a link to those six issues that the Trade collects.

I would think starting after Infinite Crisis with Superman and Action Comics is a great and fun place to start. Busiek and Johns are taking Superman to another level with writing, and with some guest writing with Donner, its been a good two years. If you want to pick up KC you can, because it is a real good story, but then to tie it in to current continuity, pick up Justice Society 10, which was the last episode, and on, because it features KC Superman and will tie in to Final Crisis.

Read Action Comics starting with issue #855. It's the start of a nice Bizarro story.

Anything written by Busiek, Johns, or Morrison is a good place to start.

I like Morrisons take on him in All-Star Superman, so give that a shot. It comes out bi-monthly, so one trade, and your pretty much up to date.

I also liked Morrisons characterization of Superman back in the 90's during his JLA run. Might pick up a few trades of that.

If you want elseworlds, also try Superman:Red Son. Very good story there as well.

Otherwise, I would definatly pick up some of the current Superman stuff. Probably the strongest writing it's had in a while.
