so whats your favorite scary/creepy musical score.my favs are
the isolated Ennio Morricone soundtrack from john carpenters "the thing".the pulsating synth is eerie and a great build up of tension and suspense.and it has a great sense of dread.
Mike Oldfield's tubular bells,a great eerie sound.

I loved being in that musical.
For me, I'm partial to Akira Yamaoka's Silent Hill score(yes, the music was made for the games first, but considering they were in the film as well..).

Anyone else besides me see the classic J-Horror, Kwaidan? If you did then you know that it totally earned a place on this thread.

I'm not sure what the piece is called or if was even created for the film itself, but the main theme for Requiem For a Dream is fantastic.

Second that. The music was by a string quartet called Kronos. I believe it was created for the film itself. However, I now hear that music all the time in trailers and other places.

It was composed by Clint Mansell, who has also worked with Aronofsky on Pi and The Fountain. A version of the theme(called Lux Aeterna) was also used for the LOTR: Two Towers trailer called "Requiem for a Tower." Kronos Quartet performed both pieces.

The score of "Manhunter." I've been sucking off this movie a lot lately.

It's not technically a movie score, but it was used in 2001, so I'm counting it.
Ligeti's Requiem for Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Two Mixed Choirs & Orchestra.
I can't even listen to that one in the dark. It makes me feel like I'm surrounded by creeping things.

Am I the only one that likes Brain Cox's Lecter better then Hopkins?

I like them equally for different reasons. Cox's Lector is disturbing because he seems like a normal guy for the most part. He behaves as if what he has done is normal. Hopkins' Lector is great to watch because of the scenery-chewing.

I always get creeped out when I hear "I Only Have Eyes For You" by the Flamingos. I'm sure that song was playing during a scary scene from a movie or tv show but I can't remember it.

It was a central song in a Buffy episode of the same name.

I thought "Worst Pies in London" was especially creepy my second time seeing the show. They really are the worst pies in London.
Soylent green, anyone?

I was listening to a compilation of John Williams music from Steven Spielberg movies and totally forgetting I had it on... then the Jaws theme was playing and it didn't occur to me until the big "bah dum bah dum bah dum bah dum bah DUM!". I must have jumped 10 feet in the air.

What is that instrument?
Some kind of stringed instrument alternating notes a tritone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tritone) apart, with intermittent drums. Then some 70s-style keyboards come in with a weird shift to major key.
I found it quite cheesy.

It was a central song in a Buffy episode of the same name.I don't think that's it. I haven't watched a lot of Buffy and I've never seen that ep. Maybe it's the "Shu-wop, Shu-wop" part just reminds me of the "Friday the 13th" theme.

I don't know if it's what you're thinking of here, but The X-Files would often have oldies playing in contrast with horrific scenes.

After playing "Bioshock" I'm not sure I can listen to "Beyond the Sea" with impunity any more.
Oddly enough, the main theme from "Unsolved Mysteries" used to creep me out when I was akid.

When I was little my mother would watch Dr. Who, and the opening theme would scare me, especially drifting upstairs if It'd already gone to bed. "oooooooeeeeeeeeeoooooooooohh-wooooooooooooeeeeeeoooooo!"

BTW, I really do like the song but it still sends chills up my spine.

Trinity(James Dooley) its not creepy but it'll make any trailer seem awesomely dramatic.

The theme to Candyman. I listen to that score like every other week.
EDIT: From that scene where Candyman busts Helen out the nut house, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK7DuB5i22k&feature=related) and the end credits music. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoWzNPe9_DY&feature=related) And, of course, the theme. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X2m_kzY0LU&feature=related)

Psycho, Oldboy...Goblin's scores for Suspiria and Dawn of the Dead (or even the cheery library music like "The Gonk") were pretty creepy.
