You could probably add Miller Spawn/Batman to that list too, but yeah they're supposed to be, at least according to Miller, the same guy functioning in the same universe. How well that idea actually works in the stories themselves is a different matter though.

Yeah apparently, although there are clear inconsistencies - the mention of Superman flying in Year One Vs his inability to do so in ASBAR. There's also the indication that Batman has named his car the 'Batmobile' in ASBAR ("I'm the Godammn Batman and I'll name my car whatever I goddamn want" and in DKR you realise that Dick Grayson came up with that name. You could explain these inconsistencies I guess but they do seem to be the result of Miller not really thinking of all his Batman stories as being the same character in the same universe/.

Yeah I don't really see the need to try to shoehorn all of those books into one continuity.

What inconsistancies? He's the godamn Batman! He doesn't need to make sense!

THere's also the timeline issue with Arkham in DRK vs DKSA.

But Miller doesn't care about continuity. He's said that a lot of times. Well, not outside of Sin City anyway.

There are little bits of things that tie them together to some extent if you want them to be in the same universe.

I cannot believe that whoever the hell that is in ASBAR is Batman at all, let alone the same character as in Year One.

for me, Senior Member Choppa says it best, says it all--

"What inconsistancies? He's the godamn Batman! He doesn't need to make sense!"

Year One was relevatory in it's story, is history for the movement it, pardon the expression, spawned-- without it, we wouldn't be having this four-issue story of Metamorpo (among a few others...).

Dark Knight was the other end of time, and it's earned its place in history for being so snarly and scratchy, and fun.

All Star Bats is just a flat-out-gone-wild retelling brought to absurd bravuras-- I mean, really: was it a four-page, five? fold-out of the Batcave? What total, absolute excess! I really suspect the question continually arises: how outrageous can I make this?

For me, they're all great fun, and so, "What inconsistancies? He's the godamn Batman! He doesn't need to make sense!"

thanks, Choppa,
Matt

I don't see why a character can't go through change at different periods of their existance. Real people do. Athletes and movie stars go through those times of changes in public all the time.

I'd imagine a young Lindsey Lohahn who was struggling to get parts and humble existed before the out of control bratty one who turned after having a taste of fame. And the older Lindsey will be a much different one than either one of those two. Many athletes star out being nice and apreciative in the beginnings of their careers and become asswipes during their peaks when they have success and get full of themselves. Then when all the asskissing goes away and no one pays attention to them they suddenly become nice people.

Miller's Batman is going through his "cocky" period where he's doing what he wants and it seems no one can stop him. It makes total sense.

yea ASBR batman makes sense to me also, I mean its still very early in his career. Superman doesnt know him yet. the JLA is non existent. He is not aware of greater threats to the world yet. HE is in his own world. And there he is most powerful which equals him feeling like the GODDAMN BATMAN lol

Yep. I agree. Plus I'm pretty sure Miller is playing up the "cocky" out of control aspect to further show how having Robin around affects his behavior later.

Of course if they're all in the same continuity it helps explain why Dick was so messed up in DK2...the effects of long term stockholm syndrome are apparently really creepy. 'After all those rats I ate for you!'
