Hello.

Copyright question here on the writing style for copyrighting a comicbook series. (Hope this is the right place to put this? If not, sorry… I‘m a dumbass!)

Can you copyright it as a comic series proposal?….Or can you only copyright it as a story for a comic series.

I’d prefer to copyright it as proposal, if that’s possible.

Be glad if you could answer this or point me to a good site?

According to the U.S. Copyright law of 1976, as soon as you put your idea to paper it is considered to be copyrighted. It never hurts to make it official though and you can always register your work with the library of Congress in case a legal matter should come up. Last time I registered something it cost about $30 dollars. This is all assuming you reside in the U.S.

assuming you are in the US.

first of all
You can Copyright the characters, which will provide you the most protection - for example, if you copyright the idea of Mucusman, the nastiest superhumen ever, unless you sign away, you have rights to Mucusman X number of years after your death. This will protect you from someone else using it in any form of media with a few exceptions (Such as parody).

Also you can protect the story line, but that is less of a protection, as if you write a story that Mucusman goes in a eliminates the Headquarters of SNIPEHUNT, and someone makes superman go take out the headquarters of say, HAWKJOY, then your out of luck.

I guess i am now the copyright holder for Mucusman :p

I'm from the UK...but you can still register in the USA as we have no such system here.

I got this from their site:

Can foreigners register their works in the United States?
Any work that is protected by U.S. copyright law can be registered. This includes many works of foreign origin. All works that are unpublished, regardless of the nationality of the author, are protected in the United States. Works that are first published in the United States or in a country with which we have a copyright treaty or that are created by a citizen or domiciliary of a country with which we have a copyright treaty are also protected and may therefore be registered with the U.S. Copyright Office. See Circular 38a, International Copyright Relations of the United States, for the status of specific countries.

Google "Berne Convention" - I think it states that the works of the citizens in all signatory countries are protected, not just in the US.
