Chewbacca dies in Vector Prime, the first novel of the New Jedi Order series. He is eulogized, more or less, in the Chewbacca comic book series which came out around 1999 as well and has been collected in TPB.

Get the trade. It's a good read.

from what I've read (did not read the series or the issue he died in) sounded like they offed him cause the writers could not come up with any new good stuff for him and his kin. In a licensing deal, it sounded like they really screwed with the original characters to make way for new ideas within the SW universe, that's why almost all of the bloodlines of the original characters don't even make it into the most recent years, even though they had epic lives.

once again he died in the novel vector prime which was the launch novel for the new jedi order he was the first major casualty causing han to nearly revert back to the loner status he had before jedi. he had a new co pilot briefly droma or something like that i think that was the creatures name not species he was some type of lizard creature with a tail. the spot was filled permanantly by leia at the end of the new jedi order and han even considered replacing the extra large seat so leia could be more comfortable. aside from chewie not many of the original characters have died. infact chewie was the first main main characters even briefly seen characters like wes jenson and crix nadine ere mentioned in the later books. not so much with nadine just that he was incharge of the spies

sorry, saucy, should've specified. I was referring to the Dark Horse comics' storyline about many years into the future. From what I remember about reading on one of the Star Wars websites, it detailed which characters will remain (at least in the comic books) and how their ancestors fare. I thought it was pretty much the end of the line, literally, for most of them. And even their sons and daughters.

That's not the case. As noted in a previous post, he was killed off in Vector Prime, the first novel in the New Jedi Order series of books that featured the Yuhzan Vong invasion. When they were planning the book series, they wanted to kick it off with the death of a major character to demonstrate how serious the stakes were going to be in this storyline. Initially, the plan was to kill off Luke in the first book but Lucasfilm quite obviously said no. Instead Chewbacca was chosen because of the effect he would have on both the other characters (specifically Han, Leia and their offspring) and on the fans in general (the death of a well known and beloved character would certainly turn some heads).

Simply put, he was killed off for controversy and impact, not for lack of stories.
