Brian May was working on his PhD when his band, Queen, got kind of successful. He has recently returned to the research he was doing at the time and finished his thesis. He takes pretty good photos of comets, too!

Here's a link (http://www.brianmay.com/brian/briannews/briannewssep07.html)from his website.

Congratulations Dr. May!

He should hang out with the guys from the Offspring and talk about science-guy stuff.

Their music may not be the best in the world, but Dexter Holland is still a pretty smart guy - dude has a Masters in Molecular Biology.

Jeez, when's this "May" guy going to get out and do something with his life?

Let's not be too harsh, he has something to fall back on if his music career doesn't work out.

I wonder how the pay for an astronomer compares to exhuming and humping the corpse of your dead lead singer on a regular basis?

I don't know. Do you think that Ray Manzerek might know?

In my experience a thesis and a dissertation are essentially the same thing as far as academia is concerned. In fact I've heard the term "thesis dissertation" used several times in academic settings.

Hmmm, haven't shared the same experience. Length-wise and in relation to importance, the dissertation ranks higher than the thesis, meaning that for a master's degree, you write a thesis, and for a doctorate, you write a dissertation.

Edit: This is an interesting link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thesis

In most of the UK, apparently, thesis refers to doctorate work. At some US universities, a thesis is master's work while a dissertation is doctorate work. Interesting thesis.

Either way, he finished the necessary requirements. So, yippie for that!

You mean Ray Manzarek Of The 21st Century? He might have some idea, yes.
