It´s like a horror movie, only instead of a damsel in distress you have the english language running around screaming before being butchered.
I was hanging around Anime News Network a second ago when a title just lunged at me: ENGAGE PLANET..

What does that mean?
You think they just throw a dart at random english words hanging in the wall and whichever sticks , that´s it?

- Hey,Tsukihime, you got a title yet?
- Wait... tchak! Tchok! Tchac".. Night... Pizza... Fate... stay....Bunc! No, Pizza felt on the ground.... FATE/STAY NIGHT!
- Brilliant!

To be fair, some of it has more to do with difficulties in translation than with "random word combination" theory. It's important to remember that English and Japanese are about as unrelated linguistically as possible.

Going between Japanese and English never fails to be wacky. The sensibilities are so different. It's always fun to watch the expression on a history teacher's face when they say "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere."

Sometimes it's random english words stuck into sentences (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main.GratuitousEnglish)just because it's cool.

Sometimes it's english words that have actually become a part of the japanese language but might have changed (to in various ways) either pronounciation or meaning.

Sometimes it's meant to be english and just written by someone who doesen't know english.

Sometimes it's bad translations (IE: The title makes perfect sense in japanese but none whatsoever in english)

Fate/Stay Night apparently doesen't mean anything at all. It's just there to be cool.

Death Note is a vague corruption ("Note" is short for "notebook" and is apparently used in japanese exactly like that, and of course the main character's name is apparently a japanese name translated directly into english...)

Lots of animé with foreign characters have names that don't make sense at all.

Ooooooh. Titles. I thought this was a thread about Tenjo Tenge or Tsunade from Naruto.

Anyway, that's a very good point. Even some titles I like.. they kinda.. suck as actual titles. You also see this sometimes in English terms used on the show. I think you're right about the dartboard theory.

Hell, just look at my avatar. That's one big typo. The manga is called Blame! when the title really was meant to be Blam!. Meanwhile they fixed Chrno Crusade to Chrono Crusade when it came to America.

With Evangelion, they actually took a Greek word, the original word for the Christian Holy Gospel actually. Thankfully most conservative Christians missed that because they don't bother knowing the original Greek of the Gospels. Having been raised in the Eastern Church that still uses Greek, I am familiar with the word.

For the rest of it, I knew it was Shin Seiki, but I ahd to go to the Wikipedia page and Babel fish to check out what that meant. Neon should actually be new and Genesis is somewhat right as it replaces a Japanese word for beginning or century.

Oh and another anime (and manga) derives its title from Greek, Planetes. No, it's not PlanetES, dammit. Stupid fansubbers. They even translate it into multiple languges in the anime. I think they even have the English translation "wanderers". Of cours it's the Greek word we get the word 'planet' from.

Also, what is it with Japan and Full Metal? You have both Full Metal Panic and Full Metal Alchemist. I guess Japan really liked Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket.

Neon Genesis Evangelion translates (VERY roughly, it's not grammatically correct at all) to "Message/Gospel of the New Beginning/Creation" which makes sense for the series really.

Consider that the root of "angel" is "messenger" as well.

The official Japanese and English titles for EVA aren't meant to be equivalent - they're different on purpose. Some of the episode titles have official titles that are different in English and Japanese, too, iirc.

This reminds me of something me and a friend of mine figured out: if you got to you local shoeshop or sports shop and head for the sneaker section, quite a lot of the models will have names that sound like they could be anime titles. ;)

Actually, it was an anime first too. Also, Fatal Fury was a fighting anime based on a fighting video game.

I believe the poster saw those were cited as examples of real ones listed and did not see anything too strange about them.
