You've just got to hand it to the old guy, you really do.....

Elder Bush parachutes in for presidential museum opening (http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/11/11/bush.skydive.ap/index.html)

http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/189/artbushjumpck1.jpg

He's 83 and just had hip replacement surgery in January, but that isn't keeping former President George H.W. Bush from skydiving.

Bush celebrated the grand reopening of his presidential museum yesterday with a surprise jump.

It was his sixth and the first since he celebrated his 80th birthday with a jump in 2004. As in that one, Bush was strapped to an expert from the Army Golden Knights parachute team.

His first parachute jump was in 1944 when his plane was shot down over the Pacific island of Chi Chi Jima.

Did anyone else find this last part hilarious? It's not like he had a choice, he either had to jump or burn with the plane

So let's see, he invaded Iraq just to get their resources and nothing else important, and he's cool?

Son, I wouldn't vote for the man if a chimp ran against him, but it's his Dad we are talking about.

And he never invaded Iraq.

I wouldn't vote for him either mind you, but I find it hard not to like an ex-President who goes skydiving at his age.

So lighten up a bit.

On the other hand, his wife is kind of a bitch. But that might be why he's always hanging out with Clinton and skydiving these days.

Its a shame the country went into a recession during his run. The best part of his presidency was Dana Carvey doing his impression. Bush Sr. knew how to take a joke and I loved it when he let Carvey come to the White House.

My favourite George Bush moment is when he moved to Springfield and got into a feud with Homer.

So I thought to myself, `what would God do in this situation?'

There's no way that was his "first" parachute jump... he had to have had some jump training prior to being a pilot.

Maybe they meant his "last" parachute jump.

One would assume "first non-training jump".

Don't forget what they said together when they tripped and fell:

As for me, I don't think George Bush 41 was a great president. Liberating Kuwait was more for economic reasons than any good deontological motive. And he is a former member of the CIA (I'm not really a fan of that organization). But he has done a lot of good charitable work since he has left office. He has raised money for victims of Hurricane Katrina, and the Asian Tsunami.

Too bad his legacy is marred by his idiotic son. http://www.mommiesnbabies.com/forums/images/smilies/4_9_13.gif

It's so cute that you didn't think that this would turn political.

I actually like H.W. quite a bit.
Supposedly, he's actually a pretty down-to-earth guy too. A friend of mine was actually able to interview him at a Houston Rockets game a few years back. He said that Bush was drinking a beer & eating a taco during the interview.

Former director, actually.

I have no use for anyone in that family, but if he's keeping active in retirement, good for him.

Wrong Bush... this is the first one. The one that knew when to pull out and respected the United Nations.

Dude, you couldn't be more wrong. In part, it was because of the tactics of the first U.S. war with Iraq that we have such animosity toward our troops there today. The U.S. military encouraged and pledged help to those that would overthrow Saddam's regime. The Kurds and some Iraqi's banked on that support and began revolt to overthrow the government. An assessment was given to the Bush senior administration that basically outlined the quagmire that would become an eventual reality in the second U.S. war in Iraq. So, with this information, the Sr. Bush Administration went back on their word to provide air support the those who would revolt against Saddam. Without the help of the U.S. military, they were slaughtered by Saddam. So, you can see how our involvement in the first Iraq war paved way for there to be a second. During his warcrimes trial, Saddam was charged with the massacre of the Kurds during the early 90's... it was truly sadistic what he did (he gassed them if you didn't know that). But I have to ask, what of the president, the administration, that put paved the way for that situation?

I jumped four times to get my air crew wings in the Navy.

It's an amazing experience, but I have to admit to never feeling the need to do it again after the required jumps.

Of course being Air Crew School my time in free fall was about 20 seconds a jump, so I'm pretty sure I missed out on some of the fun parts.

If I ever go airborne I think I'll stay a 5 jump chump too, though Airborne school just doesnt appeal to me, cause I hate formation running.

This is a good thread to ask. For the people who like 'chuting, is it vaguely similar to riding a roller coaster in the sense of speed + being out of control? I like coasters, and have done a lot of the good ones (just did Voyage, good gods that coaster is INSANE). Jumping makes me nervous, cause I just think that a lot can go wrong, even though that's obviously not the case.

It is quite a bit like going down a big curve in a rollarcoaster only without the coaster.

The difference is that you don't suddenly change direction, and when your chute opens you don't suddenly jerk to a stop.

You just slow down fast.

But even then you are still falling at a decent clip and when you hit the ground, it's quite a bit like jumping off of a wall.

The view of the entire world underneath me is the coolest thing I ever saw.

I do think this is cool. I remember seeing him do this on his 80th, and thinking that was cool. How does he not break something at this age?

Bush was a terrible domestic president (not bad in foreign policy, though), but he was also everything the current bunch are not...a real man who went out and fought (and almost died) for his country.

Yeah, "off the top of a ten foot wall" is how I always heard it. You still hit hard enough you're probably going to want to roll with it.

I haven't, but I'd like to try it some time.

Actually you don't roll, you try to come in at an angle and make a running landing.

A land and roll puts all the weight on your ankles, but a running landing spreads the force through your entire body, making for an eaisier landing.
