He is pure fun, and one of the underappriciated greats.
My cousin and I where sitting around watching Justice League The Enemy Below, the one where Aquaman loses his hand. When Aquaman got his hand replaced my cousin turned to me and asked, "he replaced his hand with a bottle opener?" :D

I always liked the dynamics Aquaman brought to the JLA, especially during Grant Morrison's run, but I never liked the character in his own monthly. Not even Kurt Busiek and Jackson Guice, a superstar writer and artist team if there ever was one, made the book interesting for me.

He lives in the water and talks to fishies! Awesomely lame!
Seriously, though, I've never gotten into Aquaman. It's strange because I really like his look, which is usually a big part of why I pick up a book, and his name is pleasing to both say and hear.

He makes evil GL's his bitch by *stabbing* them before they can attack (JLA: Earth 2), mentally fought a Star Conquerer and gives people seizures by staring at them (JLA: New World Order).
Aquaman is the most under-rated hero in the DCU.

One of the best uses of Aquaman recently was in Justice. He even had Mera and his seahorse with him, and he kicked butt!

They may not disrespect him, but having them actually voice/show their respect in the comics might actually change a lot of fans' perceptions of him.

Aquaman gets treated almost as bad as Wonder Woman when it comes to direction changes. Hell, in his last series alone, which lasted all of, what, four years, he underwent three major direction shifts and a few smaller ones. I think if Kurt would've stuck with the character and continued with his original story (which he revealed somewhere on the DC forum, and if I had more time, I'd dig it up for you guys), his run would've given everyone the perfect situation. Old Aquaman would still be around as King Orin of Atlantis and New Aquaman would've had fun, different adventures than we've seen of Aquaman before. That way, everyone has their Aquaman for the Justice League, and others have a fresh Aquaman with a Robert E. Howard/Lovecraftian twist.
Damn shame, 'cause I was loving what Kurt was doing with the book, and I was even starting to warm up to Tad's run before it got canceled.

I really thought Aquaman was cool when I was a kid. It wasn't until I got back into comics as an adult that I found out how much many people didn't like him as a character, and that he wasn't really around anymore. What Aquaman needs is an awesome writer, a great reboot of sorts, and an epic storyline similar to the way Hal Jordan recently came back and the Sinestro War.

In all fairness, I don't really like Aquaman. The only incarnation I have ever liked of him was in JLU. I am still miffed he beat Diana in that fight. With very rare exceptions, no one, esp. not Aquaman should beat her. Because to be honest, she is way above him in terms of strength and skill.
There was an episode of the X-Files called The Erlenmyer Flask which had an Aquaman like character. Maybe, they can re-write Aquaman's origin and make him a product of a government experiment, like Wolverine, except not as ubiquitous and over played.

I read the Jim Aparo Aquaman when I was a kid. The death of Arthur Jr. is intense but I was very unhappy with it at the time and I think it was a mistake.
Instead of having a fun, sea adventure with intense moments, the character changed instantly into angry and brooding and there he's remained stuck for years. I think you easily could come up with great stories as Aquaman explored his heritage, deal with the responsibilities of family, some solo stories in Mera's realm, Atlantean politics, Garth, etc. But the death of Arthur Jr. really cut out a lot of the supporting cast for a long, long time.
I think that's what Busiek was aiming for, a sea adventure series without a lot of the emotional baggage of the past twenty years or so. Unfortunately, it moved a little slowly, and the new Aquaman seemed a little..dense for me.
I'd retcon it all and have Arthur Jr. live. And I'd have adventure stories and a "Times Past" type story every now and then, set in the Atlantean past. I really loved the "Atlantis Chronicles." Great stuff. It should be in a trade.

He was a total himbo! No personality at all. King Shark would've made a more interesting protagonist. Heck, Topo would've.

Perhaps he isn't a dick, like namor. Namor comes off pretty grandoise, a kind of anti-hero;whereas Aquaman is a little too goodie-goodie. And when they try to darken him up, it just comes off pretty lame.

That's pretty much how I feel. I think Namor is interesting because he behaves in the way you'd expect of a King who makes three quarters of the world his Kingdom. He's prone to extremes, is almost completely uncompromising, passionate and direct to a fault. It doesn't matter if you like him or not, he's the kind of character that when he steps into a room he forces you to take notice. He can come off as a petulant overbearing brat or as majestic and regal ruler, but he's never boring*
It's always seemed to me that it's rare for Aquaman to get that kind of strong, consistent characterization.
*In my opinion, anyway. I'm sure there will be a chorus of people who will pipe up and mention how boring they find Namor.

I think the difference is that Namor isn't quite the 'joke' that Aquaman is in the popular media and even among the fans. Obviously Aquaman is better known, so that makes sense, but at the same time I think it goes beyond that. People don't chuckle and make fish jokes when Namor shows up in a comic.
Instead most jokes tend revolve around his questionable fashion sense....

I love his personality. I love how he will talk down to Superman. I think he just needs people to write him so that other people respect him. I mean this guy is strong, and durable. He lives in the ocean and is fast under water, so you know he's fast on land. I kinda like people not taking him seriously, it just makes him cooler.
