I was watching Empire Strikes Back again last night, and I think when Han is getting lowered into the freezing chamber is probably one of my favorite movie scenes. It's emotional and witty all at the same time. Leah comes out of the emotional closet she's been hiding in for the better part of two films, and Han can only respond to her saying, "I love you," with the words, "I know."

Then the whole time, C-3PO is tied on Chewy's back complaining that he doesn't have a good view of the whole thing.

Classic scene, and somewhat unforgettable for me.

You have one?

SOOOOO many in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Hedwig watching as Luthor leaves her, and the wall falls on the television, and she looks at the photo of Luthor eating a hot dog. The song Wig In A Box. The moment during 'Angry Inch' when the audience member screams out 'Faggot!' and the band cracks open a can of whupass. SO many of my favorite movie moments come from that film alone.

When Takashi Shimura's character sings to himself on the swings in the park he helped build before dying in Ikiru.

Eli Wallach running through the graveyard while The Ecstacy of Gold plays in The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.

"Superman" in The Iron Giant.

The shootout in the church at the end of The Killer.

Stacy Keach taking out a bar full of bikers in The Ninth Configuration.

The fight on the elevated train in Spider-Man 2.

Rocketeer - The whole final fight scene. This was the first action movie I'd ever seen in theatres. The look on the bad guys face when he realizes hes still belted in. All of it.

I saw all the Bond movies on ABC when I was very very young and certain moments like Jaws chasing Bond in the alley, the end of The Man with the Golden Gun, and the big ski chase/fighting scene from one of them. Plus a ton more.

The big memories come from Empure Stikes back as well. The movie was just packed with them. Oh and the morrocan bar scene from Condor Man was not iconic so much as an early memory that just came to me. That movie was a fun departure from James Bond.

Police Chief Martin Brody, scientist Matt Hooper and fisherman Quint (captain of The Orca) have set out to sea to destroy the rouge shark that has been killing the folks of Amnity Island. Brody is given the job of chumming the water with a sickening mixture of fish blood and parts while Hooper drives the boat.

After an unsuccessful try at catching the shark on rod and reel, Quint orders Brody to restart the chum line. Much to Brody's ire, his request that Hooper take a turn at the sickening job is shot down. Brody mutters under his breath, "'Slow ahead,'... I can go 'slow ahead'. Come on down and chum some of this shit."

Then the shark's head emerges from the water. For the first time Chief Brody gets a look at the enormity of a 25 foot long, three ton Great White shark.

Indeed, Quint is going to need a bigger boat!

The whole sequence at the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark is classic. If I had to pick one scene of it? Probably when Indy looks up and sees the giant rock rolling toward him.

Oh, and the scene where Glenn Closes' character has to endure her humiliation at the end of Dangerous Liasons.

First, the romantic ones, because I am a sap:

*Patrick Swayze, at the end of "Dirty Dancing." 'Nobody puts Baby in a corner."

*Richard Gere, striding into the factory and literally carrying off Debra Winger, in an "Officer and a Gentleman."

*The sex scene on the stairs between Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo, "The Thomas Crown Affair."

*The end of the "Ghost and Mrs. Muir." I want someone to say my name the way Rex Harrison says "Lu-ci-a."

*The entire long beginning sequence to "His Girl Friday." Rosalind Russell walks through the newsroom like she owns it, Cary Grant acts like he owns her, and the dialogue is almost too fast to follow. The best romantic comedy ever. Russell gets the job, the story, and Cary Grant. Fantastic!

*Gazebo scene between the Captain and Maria, "The Sound of Music."

And the action sequences:

*Fight scene, the final revenge of Inigo Montoya. "I want my father back, you sonofabitch." Princess Bride, natch.

*Indy facing down the swordsman, "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Classic, and another ab lib by Harrison Ford, just like in "Empire."

*The moment in the "Incredibles" on the island, as the family finally all join forces--that freeze frame right as the bad guys show up. Perfect, perfect. Tied with "this is the BEST VACATION EVER!" from the same movie.

*Batman on the rooftop with Gordon, the end of "Batman Begins."

Also love the "I think we're gonna need a bigger boat" scene.

* Jack Nicholson discussing the Donner Party with his family in The Shining

* "Follow that pedestrian!" Metropolitan

* "Your father's passing" To Kill a Mockingbird; not to mention "Hello Boo!" gets me every damn time

* "Waaaariors....come out to plaa-yay"

* Steve Coogan encounters a hot chestnut in A Cock and Bull Story

* the chase scene in Ong Bak

* miming to Roy Orbison in Blue Velvet

* Magnolia, especially the scene were John C. Reilly comes round to visit Claudia Gator and she's stoned

* Bill Murray in STRIPES "...and then the depression set in"

* Repo Man "John Wayne was a fag (http://youtube.com/watch?v=-uv_WGEHr4I)!"

* finally the opening to Raising Arizona.

* miming to Roy Orbison in Blue Velvet

I was going to mention that. Good call. I'll add two more from the same film. The opening, which is even better after you've seen the film (at least) once, is awesome. And I also love the scene where Jeffery is watching Dorothy and Frank from her closet.

*Gazebo scene between the Captain and Maria, "The Sound of Music."

I was thinking about that overnight at work. I think it had more to do with another post on Yabs, but I do love the scene.

In that Vein:

"If I Were a Rich Man"

"Make 'em Laugh"

Final Scene of "An American in Paris", but more than that "Its very clear..." and most of the movie.

"Singing in the Rain" and "Gotta Dance" too

And both the very begining and end of "Breakfast at Tiffany's"

From recent years:

The Usual Suspects last 15 minutes

Bullit Tooth Tony's little speech in "Snatch"

The opening scene to Akira

- Corrina named one of my favourites from The Incredibles. I was grinning like an idiot in the theatre when Dash was ripping it across the water, and then realized what he was doing.

- "Deserve's got nothing to do with it." Chilling.

- The very finale of Memento, when Leonard writes himself a note... (no spoilers for those of you who haven't seen it)

- "Holy crap, I just shot Marvin's head off!" (Pulp Fiction)

- "Ok." "Ok." (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)

- "You are what you love, not what loves you." (Adaptation)

- The final fight scene in Ravenous. Man, it's so meticulous and gory, the realism adds to its effect in the end.

- In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest SPOILERS

When McMurphy chokes Nurse Ratched, I'm there with him, choking her too, every time. That film never fails to break my heart.

Yeah, for so many unnamed reasons, that's just insanely tragic, and a microcosm of the entire movie.

*The moment Cole Sears (Haley Joel Osment) reveals his 'gift' to his mother (it made me teary eyed) in the Sixth Sense and, of course, the twist at the end.

*The entire flashback scene in BB:ROTJ.

*The 'Hellfire' song in Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

*Luke Skywalker discovering his true parentage.

*Jack's death in Titanic.

*The ear slicing scene in Resevoir Dogs.

*Jack Torrance hacking his way through the door in the shining.

*The stampede scene in the Lion King.

Bridget Jones's Diary:
"Wait a minute... Nice boys don't kiss like that."
"Oh, yes, they fucking do."

PotC: At World's End, where Jack Sparrow does something totally unselfish for the sake of someone else - possibly for this first time in his *life* - and makes Will stab the heart.

Empire Records. Pretty much the whole movie. But especially the bit where Gina just loses it - "I study! I study!"

I'm a sucker for the big charge scenes:

Chronicles of Narnia, at the exact point where king Edward lowers his helm and the charge forms a wedge, with the cheetahs suddenly accelerating ahead. Energy! Woot!

LoTR, the Return of the King, when the riders of Rohan appear on the ridge opposite the white city and then slam into the orcish hordes.

and, an aussie movie, The Lighthorsemen. It's about one of the very last successful cavalry charges in history, although it's often discounted because the Australian Light Horse were actually mounted infantry. Essentially these guys raced four miles of open ground in the face of machine gun fire on horses that had had no water in the desert and against all the odds broke the turkish-german line at Beersheba, Palestine. This action helped change the course of the war in the middle east in World War One. I get chills every time I watch it.

Too many to list all, so I'll hit the highlights:

The Wizad of Oz--The film's change to color when Dorothy sees Oz for the very first time; "If I Only Had A Heart"--charming number; "King of The Forest"; nearly every moment with Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch of The West--sheer movie villain perfection; "There's no place like home".

M--the look on the killer's face when he realizes the townfolk know and the jig most certainly is up.

The Women--The heroine's line at the end about "Jungle Red".

East of Eden--James Dean's character forces a meeting between his "golden boy" brother and estranged mother.

A Streetcar Named Desire--"I always did rely on the kindness of strangers."

Imitation of Life--schmaltzy story, but the funeral scene at the end still brings on the tragic drama.

Suddenly Last Summer--Elizabeth Taylor watching street urchins literally tear her gay brother apart. That scream, that scream! Girlfriend brought the talent back in her prime!

The Children's Hour--Shirley Maclaines' Martha's painful confession to Audrey Hepburn's character. Powerful and tragic story of the devastation caused by spiteful gossip and busybodies.

My Fair Lady--Audrey's musical vow of revenge, "Just you wait" indeed! Liza's triumphant debut in full formal glory; "Move yer bloody ass!"

Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!--Tura Satana and friends shakin' and shimmying at a go-go club while Russ Meyer ominously warns viewers about the "dangerous new breed of woman"; Billie and Rosie's catfight, especially the trashy score playing; Varla baiting the cleancut jock into drag racing, then promptly kicking his ass and breaking his back afterward; the homoerotic worship of the Adonis nicknamed "The Vegetable" as he doffs his shirt and works out.

Bonnie & Clyde--The infamous death scene, where the title characters die in a hail of bullets.

That's it for now--I'll return with more favorite moments from the 70's on up!

There were so many good moments in that movie, but that one always gets to me.

A few more:

Albert Finney as a gun-wielding bad ass in that one scene in Miller's Crossing
The ice sculpting/dancing scene in Edward Scissorhands
Jackie Chan vs. Ken Lo at the end of Drunken Master II
Tyrone Power vs. Basil Rathbone at the end of The Mark of Zorro
"I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream" in Down By Law
The end of David Cronenberg's The Fly (heartbreaking, imo)
The first 30 or so minutes of The Holy Mountain
The "ABC" scene from Glengarry Glen Ross
"Wise Up" in Magnolia
The last draw in Sanjuro

The blood dropping on Carrie and the subsequent look she gets on her face. One of those moments when you know things are about to get REALLY ugly really soon.

-----

The baptism in 'Ed Wood.'

-----

In 'Dumb and Dumber' when they pop the cork on that champagne bottle and nail that endangered owl right between the eyes. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life.

-----

Funny how you say that, Aggie! LOL Earlier in the night, I admired your choices. :D You know, the thing about Malyn's breakdown is that people often mistake her "it really does look like a football helmet" for pure humor. The humor only happens as a moment of tragic irony.

Shug's "parade of sinners" toward her old church moves me even today. For starters, the vocals and music mesh so neatly and they're all just that good. Witnessing the breakdown of walls between the so-called "backsliders" and the "Bible thumpers" spoke to the power of Alice Walker's work in The Color Purple. The pure joy of reconciliation seemed so evident on the cast's faces. It truly lent a profound beauty to the moment.

The Bride's fights...ah, action movie magic! Her best fights (imo) were the visceral ones. When she finally met Vernita face-to-face, you knew she took her oath of revenge damned seriously. That fight showed the mix of regret, anger, hate, and single-minded determination in Beatrix. By the time she encounters Elle, her wrath has reached a fever pitch. Uma & Darryl sizzled in their mutual hatred. In my mind, that was the REAL showdown of volume 2. That stuff with Bill? Just wrapping up loose ends.

I really want to see Jackie Brown again, if for nothing else than seeing a nice tribute to Pam Grier.

Brick & Maggie--good choice! I'd add Maggie's speech about feeling like said cat on the tin roof, her calling those hateful brats "little no neck monsters", and Big Daddy's joy over Maggie's pending pregnancy. If y'all can't tell, I love Tennessee Williams' ouevre!

And Spirited Away--simply gorgeous. What a magical experience, so imaginative and mature in scope! I think it shows a wonderful coming of age, as well as providing an element of the cautionary tale (against greed, whininess, and being poor guests). Frankly, I think Spirited Away easily stands alongside Disney's best!

Hmmm... here's a couple, off the top of my head (shying away from the more popular movies for this).

In Serendipity, "When you know." Jonathon's bride-to-be gives him his wedding present (a certain book). It was amazing, beautiful, powerful, sad...

In Short Circuit, when 'Number 5' gets the joke and dies laughing. That scene always stuck with me in a pleasant way. :)

In a movie called The Owl and the Pussycat (this is the only scene from that movie that I remember in a non-vague sense). Felix trashes his typewriter...

Doris: "What did you do that for?!"

Felix: "It was either him or me."

Doris: "What are you talking about? That was your typewriter!"

Felix: "The son of a bitch was trying to kill me."
