Yep, Mark Bagely is going to DC. Score one for DC recieving one of Marvel's most consistent artists whom actually puts his stuff out on a schedule.

I met Bags at the Emerald CIty Comicon and heard him tell the funny story about how John Romita JR's kid actually points to Spider-man merchandise with bagely's art on it and asks 'did you draw that' and Romita has to angrily reply 'No!' Funny. I see Bags Spidey everywhere now.

Bad Omen for Marvel?

Bad Omen for Marvel?

I wouldn't think so. Bagley's been at Marvel--what-- 20 years. I'm sure he just wants to do some characters other than Spider-Man for a change.

Basically. Although I have to admit, I did not see this coming.

Anyone know of any good interviiews Bags has done on a podcast?

Maybe now some high-profile DC Comics can come out on time.

You know where this is going to have the most effect? Bagley's been doing all of the Spidey licensing images for ages now. They're going to have to find a new guy.

Not really. Marvel still owns all the images he's done. (You'll note they haven't been doing too many new ones, just putting the old ones on new stuff.)

Yes, but eventually, they're going to have to move on. It's not that the old ones are invalidated, but eventually they'll need a new face for Spidey

By the thread title I thought you meant you were going to start leaving your comics sitting around in the open air or something.

Haha, I thought the same thing.

And yeah Bagley has been saying that he's been wanting to do DC stuff for a while.

Another one bites the dust. Good for Bagley I guess. Going to be weird to see him on non-Marvel stuff.

Now here's the other part of the equation: usually when an announcement like this happens, it's countered by an announcement that Marvel has snagged some formerly DC exclusive. Granted, this usually happens during con season, but anyone have any guesses?

Yeah, there's not a ton I can think of right now that I would be super excited over. Except maybe Andy Diggle. I'd be hyped for that.

Yeah, I always find it funny how much it looks like inter-company trading even though they're doing nothing of the sort.

Not sure who they would snag, I though Phil Jimenez was a good catch as of recent.

Yep, Mark Bagely is going to DC...

Bad Omen for Marvel?

I don't think so... my gods, if you were drawing the same character repeatedly, every day, for YEARS, wouldn't you want a break?

It's like anything else: I'm a radio guy. Worked for the top rock station in Vermont for years doing the afternoon drive shift, even after it went classic rock. But after a while, playing the same Led Zep/AC/DC/Pink Floyd/Aerosmith songs every day starts to erode your soul. You still love the bands, but you never want to hear "Stairway to Heaven" ever again! So I'm not there anymore. But I wasn't going to leave radio, or Vermont. Now, I'm with a Triple-A station, Adult Alternative Album Rock, and happy as a pig in you-know. Still on afternoon drive, but allowed to be more myself and with a bigger variety of songs to play. Change is good!

If Bags stayed with Marvel, no matter where he went he'd be drawing Spider-Man, because you don't keep a top artist who delivers ON TIME (oh my!) on anything but your top books. Guess who seems to show up in those?

An exclusive with either of the big two means steady, guaranteed income. Any top artist today who likes a regular paycheck signs one. It would have surprised me if Bagley hadn't signed an exclusive with DC, after walking from Marvel. He's got some fun iconic characters to play with, and he won't even have to draw Spidey as a guest!

It's sad to see him go. I wonder who will take over Mighty Avengers once he has left?

This sucks for Marvel. I hope he left on good terms so we can see him again soon. I will miss his Spidey.

You mean Bagley didn't want to spend the rest of his life drawing symbiotes?

I'm shocked.

Oh well, he might do a DC title I might pick up!

It's a shame. Sure I can understand he wants to draw something other than Spidey, but he could have drawn other titles, like Mighty. Anyway, I can understand why he would want to go to DC though. I hope he goes to a title I'm interested and comes back later.

I would say CB Cebulski -since he recently became exclusive- but outside of his Image stuff he hasn't done anything DC that I'm aware of.

too bad hes leaving, would have liked to see him on a spider-man title again.
But Batman would be great too :)

He hasn't, but I don't think he counts, anyways. That was more him moving from editor to exclusive writer - that's not really a score. I'm wondering more if there is going to be a Marvel response. But honestly, I'm not sure if there is a potential get for Marvel at DC right now better than Bagley, short of getting the Kuberts back or something. Or Andy Diggle. Seriously, get Andy Diggle, put him on Iron Man with Pascual Ferry. Instant gold.

I would totally agree on both counts regarding Andy Diggle and Pascual Ferry.

After 20 years, most pencillers are crap. Which isn't really in response to anything you wrote, just saying that it's amazing Bagley is still as good as ever after 20 years. Seriously, the number of pencillers who are as good as ever after two decades is relatively slim.

DC really don't have any "DC Artists" that have been there for years... it's a pretty rare thing even at Marvel (Bags and JRJR).

If we saw a similar move from Marvel, it'd be a big writer.

What troubles me with Bagley's imminent departure is something which has been bothering me for the last couple of years, at Marvel. It seems that unless you are an artist capable of drawing photo-real work or your style considered to be 'dark and gritty' then Marvel seem to have no place for you. And while that is great for book like Daredevil, Astoning X-Men or New Avengers it does not fit a lot of the titles on Marvel's books. Titles like, for example, New Warriors, Heroes for Hire or Excalibur really don't suit the style at all. And Marvel seem to now have drought of artists in the Ed Benes/Carlos Pacheco kind of style which DC have, and would suit those titles infinitely better. Instead they get some very uninspiring artwork - and much as though the writing should be the key factor to selling a book, you know that a lot of people only buy books on the face value of the art.

I think Marvel genuinely will have some problems over the next couple of years unless they start trying to embrace more of a range of artistic styles.

That's too bad... I was sort of hoping he'd take over Mighty Avengers. Ah well. I'm sure Bendis will get some A list guy for the book (though given the pattern of Bendis artist I'm sure that guy will leave for whatever reason and need to be replaced too).

Not at all. And I'm so incredibly glad he's still there. Because his style IS different. I just worry that for book which require a more traditional comics style at Marvel there aren't that many strong artists available to fit the mould, who bring something dynamic to the table in that style. Bagley was probably Marvel's best example of that. I think it's a tremendous shame to see him go.

Or Skottie Young, Joe Mad, wuzzizname, the guy taking over for Mad in Ultimates, Frank Cho, the guy doing The Initiative whose name I can't remember, Kitson, Olivretti, Coipel... I think that's a pretty good mix.

Oh, and Zircher, who is currently doing a gritty, realistic style, but can do pretty much damn near anything.
