View Full Version : Should Joker have his own title again?

Considering the sustained popularity of the character, do you think the Joker is entertaining enough to have his own title again?
Myself I think there's potential, at the very least a mini-series. Sure it would be tough to tell a story with a villain as the main character due to the vicious acts that could possibly turn off readers. But considering the amount of charisma and dark humor Joker possesses, the right writer could pull it off (Joe Kelly, Fabian, etc.)

maybe a new mini series, but i don't believe a ongoing series would work.
I kind of like the fact that when we do see the joker it gives us a brief insight into the character, nothing more. It keeps a sense of mystery about him and what not

yeah, I'm not sure it can work, though the correct writer could do a really nice job.
When Joker had his own title?
The Joker had his own bi-monthly back in the 70s. It ran for nine issues and the only really memorable story was the Joker meeting the Creeper. The biggest problem was the Comics Code Authority, at the time, demanded that villains be captured at the end of each story, so the Joker was always caught at the end.
Anyway, no I don't think the Joker should have his own title. When you make a villain the star of a book you have to in essence make them the hero. Back in the 90s Deathstroke the Terminator had his own title. Was he off killing people? No, he was fighting villains and teaming up with heroes. The Joker wouldn't work as the hero.
What I would like to see is a story where the Joker fights someone other than Batman. His series in the 70s had Green Arrow, the Creeper and the entire Justice League of America as antagonists.

It depends, if you can make good stories making him the protaganist, while not compromising his character, then I say go for it.

Personally, I'd rather NOT have a Joker series. The Joker is one of my all-time favorite villains, and I just can't stand to see someone come in and screw his character up.

I think he's too over-exposed in general anyway to be honest, so no.

It would be great to have a new Joker story every month, but I doubt they would be able to pull it off. Better not to have a series than risk spoiling the character.

I think Joker can often be overused loses his special pale among the rouges. He's not just any villian, he's THE villian. They need to save him for major stories and not just use him everywhere.
Then again, I think there are already too many DC and Batman books as there is. I argue that DC in general needs to cut down on its books and have clearers series. There are too many mini series and crossovers as it is.

I have to agree with rZi, I like the fact that we only get a glimpse of the Joker and never fully understand him. A mini series would be great, even without Batman, maybe just dealing with the time when he isn't actually committing a crime or something different than how you usually see him.
I don't think it's a good idea. But a mini-series would be great.

Maybe a mini-series. I would not want overexposure or a softening of the character.
The Joker is THE villian of villians. He's above Lex Luthor, Green Goblin, Magneto, etc. He is so intertwined with Batman on a psychological level, it's beyond just simple revenge battles.

Yeah, a mini would be good, but the thing is, I still have Joker Time in my head.
Keep the character to a minimum, because they work better that way. Overexposure would be a detriment.

So the Joker met the Creeper. Was the meeting as crazy as the Batman TAS ep? ;)
But, yeah I would like to see the Joker clash with heroes outside of the bat group. Hell when was the last time that has happened?

I think it would be possible to have a good Joker story primarily telling it from his point of view instead of Batman.
To be honest, that could possibly work well with a few of Batman's rogues gallery. Reading a Batman title you generally get to see how he figures out items to go after his villains. It might be good to have a story where you see the Riddler, Penguin or Joker are planning and executing their schemes without seeing how Batman is figuring it out.

Oh please.
I don't believe that in the slightest.
With what you can get away with in comics today, The only thing that would neuter the Joker in a new mini would be how far they're willing to let him go.

The perfect writer for this would be Jimmy Robinson - his Bomb Queen is a perfect example of how such a series would work.

Well, the trick with an ongoing would be to have Joker going against people who is even worse than him in a way (because they are sane, and they should know better) most of the time, and make it a very dark comedy. Kind of like Lobo, who is a depraved, selfish, genocidal monster, but can carry a monthly book.
OTOH, it'd be easier to have an Arkham Asylum ongoing series, kind of like the Batmanverse's Oz.

I'd love that. I'd just like to see a day in the life of the average employee at Arkham. How they deal with the constant incompetence (and occasional insanity) of their peers, routine break outs, celebrity mental cases, etc...I think it has a lot of potential.
As for the Joker...eh, maybe a mini but I can't see an ongoing retaining the proper tone for very long.

Yes for Arkham (Slott proved it can work)
no on a joker ongoing
It would dilute his character

I think a Joker mini or one shot would be awesome...
I really enjoyed the Last Laugh series and think Joker definitely needs to have his status as Batman's greatest nemesis returned to him.
Side note any as disappointed as I am that DC seemingly likes to take away Joker's 2 big accomplishments
They brought back Jason Todd...Making the Death in the Family, although an awesome Joker story, kinda just something he didn't succeed at.
And although I don't know if they are gonna actually stop it, but it is mentioned Booster Gold is going to go back and prevent Barbara Gorden from being shot in through the spine by the Joker.
Although my thoughts on this are if they actually make this happen, the DC universe would go through a huge change having no oracle. This just makes me think they are going to do anytime Barbs get her chance at walking...and having them go "hmmm....nah."

He should definitely NOT have his own title again. The first time proved it doesn't work.

An Arkham ongoing could work, but I don't know if they could come up with material for a monthly that would keep readers' interest. I mean it is an asylum with the inmates pretty much on lockdown. Unless they did it as a psychological study on the characters.
