View Full Version : Insect Discrimination!

The X-Men haven't had many insect-based characters in their comics over the years. But do you know what's happened to the few that they have had?
Maggott ended up dead! Angel Salvadore got depowered and shifted out of the X-books! Sikorsky hasn't been seen with the Starjammers in a long time!
The insect characters are clearly under-represented!
I say there's a clear prejudice in the X-office against insect or insect-based characters! This needs to stop.

I agree. Just look at what happened during the Brood Saga. The X-men fought to remain free of the "taint" of the brood. Clearly pro-segregation propaganda.

And they died too! As a running gag, even!
Does Pixie count as part insectiod?

She's more like a mythological creature. The closest she comes is her wings being kinda moth-like!

I never actually noticed that until now. That is interesting that there's hardly any mutants that have insect based powers. There were more mutants that were animal based than insect based.

Maggott is my favorite

It's probably because Peter Parker got all the real cool powers, even though they are technically arachnid based, not insect.

You'd like her to be, huh, FROG?!?!?!

I can give you a couple more examples! In Morrison's New X-Men Sublime's goons killed a caterpillar girl. In Astonishing X-Men Beast and Wolverine found a dead butterfly girl in Dr. Rao's lab.
You know, that's kind of an interesting link between Morrison and Whedon's stories, now that I think about it.
You'd like her to be, huh, FROG?!?!?!
:D
Oh no, my dastardly plan to eat all insect X-Men has been found out!
Nah, I like Pixie. She has to stay around to give Wolverine grief.

Pisie's wings are bugish, even if her codename isn't. And that roach-like Morlock looks pretty tough. Both are getting pretty good showings or upgrades lately.
And we have Beak's kid waiting in the wings. One is surprised, however, that antenai are not used more. Seeme a cool mutation to draw.
Maybe an interdimensional breach can bring the X-Men:

You never know here on CBR. The craziest threads get run on forever with total sincerity. Overall though I'm glad I switched to CBR from Comixfan. The majority of posters there are just.....idiots.

OMG! There were two threads like this that apparently bothered you so (though you didn't have to read them) and now one and, while you disagree, the idea that comic publishers may have an unconscious bias is hardly "stupid." When exactly did comic makers become immune? These are comic companies who, although they've made some recent strides, have historically few if any writers and editors of color, and they've gone from representing people of color first with blackface jiving and shuffling, http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3c/Ww_blackcaricature.jpg then the blaxploitation era and such "yellow peril" charactures as "Egg Fu," then a series of slightly-inferior black proteges like "Black Goliath", who created the "All New Superfriends" less than 30 years ago (don't get me started), and their arguably most progressive inclusion and, perhaps, only popularly known black character, was given blue eyes and unkinked hair (but no subconscious beauty standards I'm sure), who use people of color to train white heroes (Asians teach a white Karate Kid, Africans to teach Tarzan and those that followed, Tibetans teach a white Dr. Strange, etc. etc.), and who then maintain as serious characters such Rage, Thunderbird, Triathalon, and such ridiculously stereotyped mutant powers as "Silver Samuri" and the Inuit Maurader named "Harpoon" who are ongoing, and whose worldview, as represented by their comics, appears to be a world where over 90% of people are white, well, while made some efforts at inclusion, these publishers haven't quite yet earned the benefit of the doubt you're so eager to give them. Someday they will. But not quite yet. OMG!! ("I do say that a lot.") :p Anyway, sorry for that awful and stupid thread.

Don't downplay the plight of the six-legged. Kids pull their limbs off all the time without repercussion, and Marvel's promoting more of it.

Another. Hank Pym, white devil that he is, opresses the six legged to be his wanton slaves. Plus, he's trained other white guys to do it. DAMN THE MAN for keeping the ant down!
Forearm gets no love either, and he's got six limbs. Bah.

That might be more of that child discrimination Marvel seems to possess.
And where would the larvae come from? You'd need insect characters first!
