This is it. The final round.
http://cbi.comicbookresources.com/cbi3/102/
Your final assignment is to provide the artwork for a pitch for a hypothetical new “Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends” comic book.
You must illustrate a cover plus no less than four (4) pages of sequential samples, which can be one scene or two or however you want to break it down.
There’s no script. You get no reference or other resources. Google is your friend.
Whatever you choose to do, just make sure it impresses our “guest judge” this round, the Mighty Marvel Bullpen…

I forgot to add that Round 4's prize winner was Dan.
And now, this week’s guest judge Francis Manapul has decided to award the Round 4 bonus prize to Dan! In case you’ve forgotten, that bonus prize is a date with Mike Marts at DC Comics. Well, an online date of sorts to submit and get feedback on some art samples, that is. AND as an added bonus, Francis would also like to show your samples to his editor David Chauvel of Editions-Delcourt in France.
Congrats, Dan.

Oh great. I go that theme song stuck in my head.
Must remember that I'm an indie snob. Somebody give me a CC of Scott Pilgrim. Stat.

AWESOME! OLD SCHOOL! So one thing that doesn't seem clear, do the contestants have to stick to Spider-Man, Iceman and Firestar or can it be new and different friends?

The way I read it. It is wide open to do almost whatever they want. But as always they can contact a judge to clarify things.

That was my very doubt. Guess I'll use the old ones and some "new" faces. ;)

Hey man, the good thing about Play At Home is it was established early on that we don't have rules!
Welcome. You can even have Toejam and Earl be his friends if you want! :evilsmile

Sorry, I thought that the title and the graphic would make it clear enough that you're "pitching" a comic book based on the 80s cartoon :D

That was my first assumption but it didn't say that specifically. So I thought I'd ask. :)

This last assignment is for all the marbles, and it is sooo open.
Spiderman and His Amazing Friends? Really? :p
I can't believe this show is over 25 years old...
Good luck guys, four pages of an original pitch, and a cover - that's a lot of work for four days.
At the very least, it'll be fun to see what they come up with - X-men reunion episode, anyone?

Okay, I edited the line to read:
Your final assignment is to provide the artwork for a pitch for a hypothetical new comic book series adapting the "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends" cartoon from the 80s.
I was going to write "adapting and updating" but then I thought that someone might choose to keep it set in the 80s, which I'd love to see ;)
Anyway...

What are you stuck in the 80's or something? Go get a time machine Marty McFly.

Do they have to have the secret headquarters appear when they activate a switch made from a trophy too? the hulk cartoon was also part of that action pack. Should the hulk be fetured as well? Oh, God, I am old and a geek

Best opportunity ever! J and his amazing friends really threw in the kitchen sink on this one for what looks like a once-in-a-lifetime. Good luck to the official contestants and the folks at Play-at-Home. This is the definition of a career starting opportunity.

C'mon man, don't you think these guys are under enough preassure? Did you need to remind them of how much work they have and how little time??? :(
... then again, if they're taking the time to read all of this instead of drawing...;)
Just foolin'. I'm excited to see what they come up with too.

You know, I've heard of guys pulling all-nighters in the two or three days leading to a big con to put together samples for Marvel and/or DC's talent searches, print and publish minicomics or sketchbooks to sell, and other "last minute" attempts at getting work in comics... guys like one of our guest judges ;)
This is a "reality" show in many ways.
And you get a shot at working in comics without having to share a hotel room with seven other guys, line up for hours just to see con-weary editors who'll only grunt at your portfolio for a couple of beats, or even changing out of the clothes you slept in last night!

Nine Marvel Editors as Judges? Are you kidding me?
If I were Jon or CPW, I'd be crapping my pants in a very major way. Excited. Nervous. On the verge of suicide.
Talk about upping the pressure - that's huge.
Good luck guys - I'm sure you'll do fine, but just remember that in addition to James, Vince, Chris and Marc you have NINE MARVEL EDITORS ready to rip you a new one!
Oh, this'll be fun.

I believe it should be mandatory that Ms.Lion is the first victim of the bad guy you use in your pitch. She needs to be taken out in a painful way.
I'm not advocating any harm to real dogs. Annoying cartoon sidekicks dogs are fine though.
