View Full Version : Has Spider-Man ever saved the world?

I know Spidey is a great hero, but he doesn't usually deal with global or universal threats. Has Web Head ever save the universe or the world (and I don't mean as part of a big cross-over or group of heroes ala helping Captain Marvell defeat Thanos, etc.)?

He has a couple of times. Heck, Doctor Strange called him 'Earth's last chance' in Spider-Man Family #5.

He and the Fantastic Four saved the entire population of Earth from being turned into alien hybrids in the recent Spider-Man/Fantastic Four mini-series. You know, the one that was the last project Mike Wieringo worked on. That must surely count?

My gut inclination is to say that he must have at some point, though no specific examples spring to mind. I guess the question is, do you count team-ups? I know you said not as a big group of heroes, but what if it was just him and one other person? I'm sure he must have saved the world in a Marvel Team-Up somewhere.
I seem to recall that he and Howard the Duck saved the world from being taken over in HtD #1. Do you draw a distinction between saving it from destruction and saving the populace from worldwide enslavement?

Depending on how out of his mind Norman was, Spidey stopped him from exploding bombs all around the world that would reduce much of humanity to genetic material to be rebuilt in his image.

Spiderman was the only one left to free the Avengers & The Thing from Thanos in Marvel Two-in-One Annual #2. Excellent read. Starlin at his best.

He stopped the Jackal from killing everyone and replacing them with clones.
Did he "save the world" when he had cosmic powers?

He stopped the Arcane order back at Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1)350.

I believe he saved the entire universe (or at least helped) back in Avengers #317.

That was in "The Final Chapter".
The horrible one, not the good one.

What the...? I thought for sure I posted in this thread.
Oh well. I'll just repeat it. Every time he fought the Lizard, he saved the world, since the Lizard always wanted to use his reptiles to take over the world.

Aside from the "that dead aunt may was a clone" thing, it was a very good story, and it had nice art by JR jr.
edit: I've also posted this before in a thread... It's that kinda day.

True, and the same could be said for everytime he stopped Stegron...who wanted to take over the world with Dinosaurs.

Now I haven't read the issue but I heard vaguely on the net that he saved the world by playing rugby (with both hands tied behind the back) from Aliens who imprisoned Uatu, the Watcher.

I have one where he pulled Judas Traveller out of a time warp field, thereby saving at least NYC from a major explosion.

This is beacuse Spiderman is a fictional character.

Wasn't this the story where the "epic, climatic" final battle bweteen Spider-Man and the Green Goblin took place completely off-panel and we opened the last issue to find Spider-Man had already won?
Yeah, that wasn't good. :p

Meh, even if Spidey failed to stop the Lizard, I'm sure the Fantastic Four, X-men, and/or the Avengers wouldn't have a hard time saving the world from the Lizard's army. . .

I totally agree. That was the one that came to mind when I thought to post this; great stuff. Starlin was a master back in the day, and still churning out great stuff! But as a long time spider-fan, I couldn't remember if he ever, single handedly, ever had that geat "Wow. I just saved the world!" moment. Spidey seems to get lost in the team-ups and cross overs. Kinda like a "yeah, he was there too, look at Dr. Strange's shiny gauntlet!" kinda thing... The Avengers and FF get these ALL THE TIME but Spidey, being the greatest hero EVER, seems due for his big save the world moment.

My bad Spidey-kid 1 and Sean! I haven't read through all the threads yet. A lot of great lore there. Could you direct me (and maybe this whole thread) with a link? Thanks!! Web-meisters, feel free to redirect/combine threads as you see fit. Thanks!

But Lizard was planning on using every reptile on the planet for his plan. The majority of the planet doesn't really have super powers so a huge part of the human race would be whipped out. Who knows? Reptiles may even become a dominant species.
And even if the super heroes found a way to kill every reptile, it would just result in mass extinction. Its not smart to mess with the food chain. It would most likely come back to bite them in the ass.

Yeah but it was the 60's back then. Stan would never have a story end that . . .grim.

Back to the topic, I just remembered issue 274, where Spider-Man battled one of Memphisto's demons, with the condition that if he doesn't defeat him, The Beyonder will whipe the universe clean. Of course, through force of will, Spider-Man defeats him and The Beyonder agrees to let the universe live for another 24 hours. So he's saved not just the world, but the universe as well. Unless they retconned that one away too.

Lol. I guess your right. The heroes always win. Even if the Lizard should win by all accounts, it just wouldn't happen. Curse PIS. :D
