Just read through Comet Man last night. I was impressed that the incredible Bill Sienkiewicz provided the covers on all 6 issues and was even more surprised to see that the artist was a very young Kelley Jones.

The story itself was decent but nothing extraordinary. It did seem a little more mature than your average Marvel super hero comic at the time. There were some guest-stars including the She-Hulk and the Fantastic Four. And, interestingly enough, it retconned a previous meeting between Reed Richards and Comet Man's alter ego, Stephen Beckley, into issue #197 of the FF. Not really sure why they needed this backwards placement of Beckley into continuity.

I found it a little strange that the ending was left so open-ended. Did they expect it to sell so well that they'd put out a sequel? The tale ended up being followed up on in a four part storyline (by the same creative team) in Marvel Comics Presents #50-53 a few years later but, that's certainly a far cry from a second series.

Anyone else remember this and have anything to add?

Well I thought it was a very interesting story when I read it. Plus how many guys can teleport into the shower with She-Hulk and live to tell that tale? And the MCP definately wasn't in the same mold as the first story, though even a little more adult, with the incest and all. But in all a good read, and since you can probably find them cheap, worth picking up if you see them. But not something to go out of the way for.

ha! yeah, the implied incest was quite strange although, they never explicitly said they were hooking up ... just that he had taken her in.

The She-Hulk shower scene was fun ... kind of reminded me of FF 276 where she's exposed in a sexy magazine.

Yeah but they got the coloring wrong in that one. So in the magazine she was printed as regular white. Which is why Johnny reads the magazine with green tinted glasses. :)

I enjoyed this series a lot. it was one of the first brand new characters to hit the stands when I started collecting and i did hope there would be follow up.

As pointed out, what follow up there was ended up being very minimal.

I still think Comet Man had potential. He wasn't a slacker idiot or assassin, which is probably why he didn't re-appear that often.

it would be great if he could be revived as a non-spoof super hero in the near future.

Bring him back for the future Intiative Cosmic team, cause you know they gotta have one. Stark could say he's going to help Benny to get him to sign up.

Actually didn't Comet Man reappear in some late 80's early ninties issues of Fantastic Four as well as the MCP storyline? I also thought he was revamped in one of the Genis-Vell Captain Marvel series.

So it's not like he's been completely ignored since his mini series.

He should've shown up in one of the Annihilation series.

Yes he did appear in some FF issues, not sure which ones, but I think it involved the Beyonders. Since they created Max's race of people. And he definately was in the Genis issues. So while not really ignore, not a lot of issues there. In 20 years since his first appearance, counting his LS and the MCP, he's been in 14 issues, total.

Well put. He has made appearances, but they have been very rare.

And he would make an excellent candidate for a cosmic team.

In the early years, I had hoped he would be woven into the FF mythos as other characters like Submariner, Black panther and She Hulk were. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

They were in fantastic four #315-317.

He was also involved in Civil War. I'll have to look again, but he had a one-panel cameo in CW: Front Line, as a pro-reg (#7, I think). You can barely recognize him though, because he's crumpled on the ground after a fight with another hero on a tv screen.

that other-dimensional She-Hulk would have welcomed it. otherwise, i think O'Grady could have pulled it off and taken pictures.
