Mark Evanier has posted that Paul Norris, co-creator of Aquaman, has just passed away. The link is: http://www.newsfromme.com/

I was lucky enough to visit with Paul (and his son) in his home this summer right after the San Diego Con. I had never met him before, but he was extremely gracious and humble, and a very nice guy. I spent about four hours with him and got a nice little interview. He had some amazing World War II stories. From everything I could tell about the man, he was definitely one of the good ones. And he was an excellent artist to boot. He's often overlooked because he didn't stay in comics very long, but he did very nice work and had a long career in the newspaper strips, particularly with Brick Bradford.

I was really hoping I'd be able to see him again next year....

Rest well, Paul.

That's very sad news.

From everything I've read about Paul Norris, it seems that he was a very fine gentleman. The underwater world he drew in the Aquaman strip was a magical place. He drew a very nice Johnny Quick, too.

I always thought that Norris did an admirable job following Russ Manning on Tarzan and Magnus.

RIP Mr. Norris

Damn, damn, damn. The pool of Golden Age survivors gets shallower all the time. Rest well, Mr. Norriss.

Sad news indeed. I'm not very familiar with Mr. Norris' work as I don't believe many G.A. Aquaman stories were ever reprinted. I'm pretty sure I've seen a J.Q. story or two though.

I'm really glad you got the chance to get an interview. It's important to have the memories of these early creators in print.

Here's a tribute to Paul Norris that someone put together with still pictures and narration:

And he paved the way for the Simon/Kirby Sandman on those old Adventure Comics back in the early days, the Golden Age. Cei-U is right the old stars are fading out.

Paul Norris was an excellent artist. I especially like his art on Brick Bradford.

Here's an interesting bit of info from Mike Catron:

Paul was a really great guy. I was privileged to visit him in his home in Oceanside on a couple of occasions and he was very forthcoming about his days in comics -- and how he carried his storytelling skills forward into his military career. He ended up drawing comics-style "surrender pamphlets" which were dropped over the Philippines during World War II. Many, many people surrendered to American forces waving those very pamphlets. His work saved, probably, thousands of lives on both sides. Not only was he a comics hero, he was a war hero.

And how cool was it that the creator of Aquaman lived in Oceanside, California?

Oops, clicked on this one a little quick. Yes, it's sad that Paul Norris has passed (my condolences to the family), but I thought for a second it said Paul Newell!
