I don't know which character appeared first, Man-Thing or Swamp Thing. But Swamp Thing has almost always had better writers and artists than Man-Thing. These days, most people only talk about Man-Thing when repeating that awesome graffiti joke from Alan Moore's Top Ten series.

Swampthing and Man-Thing came about so close together that there's really no point arguing who came first.
Personjally, I like the character, but he's extremely limited in what you can do with him.

He recently had a brief appearance in She-Hulk getting pwned by a squeeky toy.
There's also an Essential Man-Thing (yes!) out. Request it at your LCS.

He had a one-shot from the Legion of Monsters event Marvel had last month. He also appeared in an issue of Marvel Adventures Spider-Man (Don't know which one), had a cameo in the new Howard the Duck mini and set to appear in an upcoming issue of X-Men: First Class.

the name Swamp-Thing is more familiar to me, but image wise, Man-Thing is more familiar.

Swamp Thing can't burn you, and his name doesn't lend itself to any immature double entendres. Man-Thing is the clear winner.
History-wise, both creatures actually appeared within 2 months of each other... Man-Thing was first, but since it generally takes 3-4 months for comics to move from a script to the finished product, there's really no way DC could have ripped off Marvel. Adding to the coincidence, Gerry Conway (Man-Thing's co-creator) and Len Wein (Swamp Thing's co-creator) were actually roommates at the time, though both have sworn that they never discussed their work with each other. And, as others have noted, they were probably both influenced by earlier swamp monsters like the Heap and Solomon Grundy.
Anyway, yeah, I wasn't sure I would like the stories in Essential Man-Thing but ended up really enjoying them... Gerber was on top of his game for most of it. Don't know if there's enough material left to justify a second volume, but I'd like to see one.

"Whatever knows fear burns at the touch of the Man-Thing" is one of the best taglines ever. Really.

Thing is, Manny's got no personality. He's just a shambling heap. That's hard to write stories around. Also, his face looks like male genitalia. And his book occasionally says Giant-Sized Man-Thing.

of COURSE I remember the Man-Thing. You're looking at a huge fan here. But, since I'm only 25, the series that roped me in was the third volume, published under the Strange Tales banner. Great stuff by DeMatteis and Sharp. Except ... the last couple issues were never printed. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Very frustrating!
Since then, I've gone back and picked up the previous series. Gerber's got some good stuff going on. Volume II is a bit "eh".
The movie was pretty bad and the series based on the movie was pretty bland, too.
Ted McKeever's done a couple of Man-Thing stories since then. And there's an AWESOME Man-Thing "pin-up" in Marvel: Portraits of a Universe

They weren't?
... that would probably explain why I could never find them, wouldn't it? :o

It certainly would.
I can't even begin to describe how disappointed I was when I learned that Strange Tales vol. IV #3-4 would never be published.
Very traumatizing moment for my 17 year old (at the time) mind.

Do you know if they were ever actually made? if they were, maybe we could get lucky and they could pull a Ghostrider on us and releasethe "final issue" a number of yeards later.

The sad thing was, it was the best Man-Thing series since Gerber's run. DeMattias took a character that is probably the most difficult to write stories for and knocked the ball out of the park. Shame no-one cared. >sniffle<

As far as I knew, at least #3 was finished. Not sure about #4.
It was later unsatisfactorily concluded in a Spider-Man Annual. Unfortunately, the Man-Thing movie already came and went (quietly into the night) so I doubt we'll be seeing this resurface anytime soon. Unless, perhaps, DeMatteis stumbles across this and decides to shows us the script. (How neat would that be!?)

What an excellent summary of the awesomeness that was this series!

thank you for solving that mystery, guys. I bought issues 1 & 2 of that series, but then I went off to University and never picked up the rest. I've looked out for them, but never found them. It's kind of cool to know the reason I never found them was that they didn't actually get printed...

I read more Man-Thing comics when they were being printed than Swamp Thing and actually owned a bunch of issues when I was a kid. Sadly, those books seem to have been in my "lost boxes" of comics.
Although I have fond memories of Man-Thing (and yes, it was a awesome tagline), I think the Berni Wrigtson Swamp Thing issues had some truly incredible art. I seem to also remember reading some Alan Moore Swamp Thing stories that had Wrightson art but can't find the reference. I just remember that at the time (mid-80's) it was simply incredible even if not really down my alley. I've always been more of a fan of the capes than the macbre.
