For all you new fans to the Death Note series, there is also a supplementary two-hour special that covers most of the L arc with some added material. A shinigami approaches Ryuk and asks him about the human world as he has grown bored with the shinigami world. Ryuk proceeds to tell him about a man who tried to change the world and wound up becoming a god. This set-up sets up the narration through the first arc. It covers what we saw in the series, but the big bonus are the additional scenes, which include L meeting Light in a theater, everyone visiting L’s grave, Light declaring his victory over L’s grave (after everyone else leaves), and bloody shots of the deaths of members of the Yotsuba group. The special ends with Ryuk gazing down into his death note at Light's name while a voice-over of his counsel to the young shinigami plays, "You should go and take a look. Someone might pick up the note, if you are lucky, and you will get to see something you won't forget for the rest of your life. " In remembrance, Ryuk parts us with, "Am I right... Light?"

Ryuk looked very aged. I don't know how much time had passed since his experience with Light, but it must have been at least a few hundred years, if not longer.

At the very end, Ryuk posed his question to the sky, as it faded to the clouds and white. One could assume the imagery to mean more, but I see it as just, typical Death Note exercise. For speculation sake, Light could neither go to heaven nor hell. There was simply nothingness for him post-life. Not knowing how their world works, it could be possible that he was reincarnated, or chosen, to become a shinigami, and an inkling of indescript memory leaked into his new, shinigami head; thus compelling him to ask Ryuk the question.
